William H. Macy plays with brilliance another lonely wanderer of the night, tired of his pathetic existence. if only Stuart Gordon had more talent behind the cameras, and the photography wasn't that bright. In the end, it's uneven, and the violence a bit cartoonish, but the strength of the piece is, of course, Mamet's dialogue and edgy situations, always compelling and deeply moralistic.

The most fascinating tale of urban self-destruction since Taxi Driver. Flawed but gutsy, and NOT politically correct!
-
Uneven and at times preposterous study of a dissolutioned man's descent into the dark side. A starry cast service Mamet's vision.
-
A nice attempt, first half pretty good but then it just goes to shit and I later found out, that's how the play is, so blame it on David Mamet who is normally good.
-
Slow and unmotivated the movie is not worth your time. It is politically incorrect (which I like) and pulls no punches, but thet cant make up for its multiple shortfalls.
-
A chronicle of one man's descent into madness and murder. Worth worth watching just to see Bai Ling as a peep show girl.
-
William H. Macy is the best! Really fun film about going mad/midlife crisis. You're on his side but don't know when to let go as he does more and more bad things.

EDMOND (2006)
directed by Stuart Gordon
starring William H. Macy, Joe Mantegna, Julia StilesThis film is about a man near his 50's who leaves his wife and go out on a run looking for sex and trying to live life cause he regrets the way he's been living so far. David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Wag the Dog, Ronin) wrote it based on his play he we get what we can expect, great dialogues.Edmond is funny and shocking. William H. Macy - a professional Mamet performer - gives a great performance while we get interesting cameo appearances by Joe Mantegna, Julias Stiles and Mena Suvari.
Through the dialogues we get to meet a troubled man who kept it all inside and he explodes in anger with violence and greed while he is obviously having a nervous breakdown or simply opening his eyes after knowing what life is like. The first hour is great and it gets to its point but the last part of the film is quite different but it still manages to be interesting with a finale exchange of dialogues that is definately worth seeing - or hearing - for its subject matter. Dialogue driven.

Shows in a somewhat forced way what can go wrong when making just a choice or two in the wrong direction when you are frustrated....

The story of one man's journey into the emptiness of his own soul. If anything can go wrong, it will - and at the worst possible time, and that's mainly how Edmond's night is about to happen. A family man, whose girl just dumped him, and decides that he is kinda old and that his life is just passing by, so what the hell, why not go out there and get a taste of it, the problem is that he didn't think he was going to be, robbed by a whore, mugged by a pimp, killing a girl(Julia Stiles) that he's just fucked, and then getting arrested for going to church, eventually leading to prison. A pretty dark night for just an ordinaty guy soon to be convict and even having no problem with sucking his cellmate's...well you know! Sorry for the spiced words but that's only to give you an idea about this movie, where the word fuck is at it's prime.
Pretty intense shit going on right here, with a very expressive actor William H. Macy that did a great job all around. -
If William H Macy didn't nail his character, the pointless journey through his madness would be... well... pointless. This movie actually hurt to watch, which is unfortunate because I find Macy to be a very talented actor.

This was an insanely weird movie. The movie was pretty funny and weird until he killed that girl. Then it just started to get full on. This was a very racist movie with a butt load of swearing. Definately not for young children.

Very disturbing, awkward, powerful film. William H. Macy cementing his stature as one of our great actors.
It reminds me of FALLING DOWN crossed with EYES WIDE SHUT. As William H Macy searches for something (he seems to initially think that all he wants is to have some casual sex), he steps into and thru different vignettes as they occur in New York City. During these little moments, there's great tension as something is on the verge of occurring, and most of the time, we're left frustrated (either by the situation or by how William H Macy is reacting to it). Several well-known actors make appearances which lead to an expectation, which may or may not be satisfied.
Written by David Mamet and some of his trademark dialogue (of which i am not a big fan).
Ending is really odd, effective (affected), but odd.
Overall, a very good film. -
Interesting idea for a movie. Almost a how-to for how not to have a mid life crisis! None of the characters in this are especially likeable, but it sure does keep you enthralled and give you a few things to think about. Julia Stiles is great in this, but kind of unhinged, as is William H Macy. The ending is probably the weakest bit as it did start to lose something by then, and I still can't figure out if it was a happy ending or not! (Well, as happy as it was going to get for Edmond, anyhow, in the circumstances), but it only runs for about 75 minutes anyhow, so it is fairly short and the first half of it is very good, although anyone who is offended by a bit of bad language and violence should probably avoid it.

Great performance from William H. Macy, and there are some rather interesting theories there as well...
-
I ultimately enjoyed this movie, especially the last scene with Macy and Woodbine, but the beginning was so ridiculous that I almost gave up. Hang in there - it has a fairly short running time, and the last 1/2 hour makes the sometimes painful journey worth it.
-
The idea seemed nice but the movie is actually just some scenes in between pointless monologues. For some time you just wait for something to happen but it just lags. Blah.
-
Macy gives very good performance. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast doesn't mesh well with the Macy's character. Unfortunately, most of the rest of cast are only in the movie for a few minutes.
-
It took me thirty minutes to turn this off......if I wanted a rascist, sexist diatribe I would tune into some nazi propeganda.....What was Macy thinking.
-
It's just not very good. Macy is good, but he can't do it all by himself. It's trying to hard to be chocking and it's just ugly.
-
another great performance from macy, here he plays another lovable loser, who bored with his marriage, decides to leave her and go out on the town to get sex by paying for it, but the problem is he disagrees with many of the prices that are on offer, so varioous atempts, to get laid fall by the waste side, and finally through a couple of scrapes doesent have enough money, great change of pace in 2nd act as he goes to prison, does go quite dark great comic tale, and any fan of macy will love this hes never bad in a film even crap ones, and here he once again shows his acting chops. its great seeing him in a main role, and check out cameos from various actresses he encounters

William H. Macy's performance is brilliant, but the film is brutal for the sake of being brutal and any attempt it tries to make at social commentary is not explored deeply enough to be worth sitting through.

Edmond: It's too much.
A strange drama/thriller involving William H Macy on a very weird sexual odyssey, leading to some harsh situations, which conclude in a worse manner.
It is based on an old play written by David Mamet, and despite my love for his dialog, this movie is just to strange to really enjoy.
Certain scenes play out well or surprise, but the overall story just didn't sit right for me. -
William H. Macy does a great job, but the story is too strange to be taken seriously. It's an odd film and surprisingly violent at times which made me feel more distant from the story. I mean what was this film about? A soulless human being? I don't know.

i liked it, but i had a hard time watching it at the same time... everything was so rude, so raw; it was an immersion in a life full of violence and there was no possible way to get out. william h. macy is a magnificient actor, i love his work so much and this makes no exception.
