  Julie Walters at her best and a great performance from Caine! Lewis Gilbert is often overlooked but has made some great British films!

  The usual chalk and cheese comedy of manners that's the staple of british comedy. Better than most because of the appeal of the two star performances but still as contrived and predictable as you'd expect from this genre.

  A brilliant performance from Julie Walters makes this film. She is absolutely brilliant as Rita and her whole career has been built on this performance. Caine is good but not great in the film. Some of his drunk acting is embarrassing and he doesn't quite convince all the time. The whole film doesn't quite escape its stage origins and the soundtrack is incredibly 80's (like The Long Good Friday) but you will only be watching this for Walters.
