A girl ,obsessed with fairy tales and living with a sadistic stepfather who hunts Communist guerrillas in post-Civil War Spain, is informed by a faun that he will restore her to her throne as an immortal fairy princess if she can complete three tasks. This would have made an exc...( read more)ellent movie if it had been written as either a dark childhood fantasy or a wartime drama; seamlessly mixing the two plotlines together turns it into a work of pure genius. The Pale Man and the Captain are two of the most frightening monsters seen on the screen this decade.

A very unique and outstanding attempt on the combination of an adult fairy tale and realistic resistance war story. Director Del Toro manages to merge those two very different aspects into a very moving, exciting and entertaining movie with wonderful effects and design. Definitel...( read more)y not a movie for children, though. The maneater sequence is one of the most terrifying scenes of recent movie history. But somehow, as well made as all this is, I had a hard time loving the movie. Maybe because it's just so damn sad. That should not stop anyone from seeing this.

While I have REAL problems with the second task Ophelia was given, I think this is a well made movie. I'd like to see it a few more times, before I make my final verdict...

I was absolutely blown away by this film. Being a huge fan of Cronos, I'd hoped Guillermo del Toro would return more to his roots in direction. Don't get me wrong, I love Hellboy, its just that this is what he does best. Brilliant, possibly the best film so far this decade/Millen...( read more)nium.

A very enjoyable film, that is well directed and has all round good production levels. It's almost like two films in one running side by side. It would have been a bit more interesting to see more of the fantasy characters and their world in which they live in. The film can be qu...( read more)ite bloody and violent at times to which was a surprise, this is definitely for an adult audience.

This has a nice style and some ideas here and there. The acting is also good, I can also see how iconic it became. But if you're familiar with Biblical stories, the ending (Which it relies on entirely) won't be as surprising.

REWATCH EDIT (Deducted one half-star): I just can't r...( read more)ecommend this film. It's cheap decor centered on Spanish politics. The CGI is gosh-darn awful - the toad looks about as real as plastic tits. No, the violence doesn't rival any scene in Irreversible because all of it is fast and sloppy, albeit explicit, in Pan's Labyrinth. Del Toro goes overboard with his emotions regarding the Civil war. His easy-access vengeance is shown too easily. In alternating "realities" I was never once convinced of the story's surrealism - it was badly directed. I have no problems watching it, but for some reason there's this weird and irritating ringing in my ears whenever this film is mentioned. Probably because I was so disappointed with it. And del Toro, please have the balls to criticize your own country. Spanish politics are as generic as they come.
