This was an extremely beautiful movie. Although it was very violent, it was very unique and interesting. It kind of made me think of the opposite of Coraline if anyone has every seen that movie. In Coraline, the girl wishes for a perfect world or one that is better than the one s...( read more)he lives in but finds that nothing is perfect and she likes it just the way it is, but in this movie, the world is portrayed as a cruel, brutal place and returning to the Underworld as princess, is where Ofelia truly belongs. This movie was extremely intense with the battle, and bloodshed. I was completely expecting more fantasy than anything, I actually thought it was all fantasy except for the beginning and boy was i wrong. But the fantasy world tied in with the real world, which made it all the more better. I really like the idea of her dying as a mortal but living on in another world. Kinda like heaven or something like that. This movie was extremely dark and mysterious, but very very beautiful. I loved it.

  • November 13, 2009
A gripping story that ends in a profoundly emotional way. Not the simple fantasy you might expect but something eternally greater. This movie is not only my 2nd favorite but one of the best films of all time.
  • November 12, 2009
Adult fairy tale, superbly crafted, intoxicating, original, simultaneously enchanting and dark, melds historical fact with imaginative fantasy and delves headlong into the brutality of the Spanish Civil War aftermath from an imaginative child's perspective. Great beauty, piercing...( read more) insight and exceptional cast.

Very good story, the fachist context making this fable more thrilling

A twisted Alice in Wonderland, love the story as its very unique.
  • November 3, 2009
A girl ,obsessed with fairy tales and living with a sadistic stepfather who hunts Communist guerrillas in post-Civil War Spain, is informed by a faun that he will restore her to her throne as an immortal fairy princess if she can complete three tasks. This would have made an exc...( read more)ellent movie if it had been written as either a dark childhood fantasy or a wartime drama; seamlessly mixing the two plotlines together turns it into a work of pure genius. The Pale Man and the Captain are two of the most frightening monsters seen on the screen this decade.

Not many liked this one, but I thought is was brutal. Not great but I enjoyed it in a boring sort of way.

Alice in Wonderland is one of the most beloved stories of our time, It tells of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and get's transported to another world where strange creatures rule and the possibilities of magic and adventure are endless. But it's been nearly 144...( read more) years since that story first appeared and ever since then film makers have been trying to tell the story a different way for years, But thanks to Guillermo del Toro we have the greatest spin off of all, El Laberinto del Fauno, or in English, Pan's Labyrinth.

Guillermo del Toro has crafted a Fantasy adventure the likes no one has ever seen before, and I know that I've said that before but this film breaks some amazing new grounds in special effects and makeup. It's just a film that you have to seen to really, truly believe because if you love Fantasy and dark, deeply emotional films than this is your ticket. While this film is brilliant in every way imaginable it does have it's downside, The film is very creepy and violent and not suited for children and may leave them with nightmares of the grotesque creatures that are shown in this film. But none the less Pan's Labyrinth is a dark and beautiful film It's one of the most exhilarating movie experiences you will ever have and it's a film you will not forget.

The Spanish cast of actors do amazing in this and give this film it's true power and worth, they bring a humanized side to an overall Fantasy movie and bring the stark reality of love, death, cruelty, sorrow and happiness to this film. All in all there fantastic in this film.

Pan's Labyrinth is brilliant, dark, engaging, relentlessly entertaining, heart breaking, horrifying and beautiful. It's a film with so much heart and so much loss and amazing fantasy adventure that when the movie starts your sucked into a world where your greatest fantasies live. And where your greatest nightmare's can lie as well It's a bold , new ground of film making that will enchant and blow your mind. All in all Pan's Labyrinth is one adventure you do want to take.

  • October 29, 2009
Amazingly creativity with the creatures and sets and costumes. The story is sad but good.
  • October 27, 2009
very bizarre, disturbing, moving and wonderful. A little disappointed because I thought it would be even more random/bizarre, but still genius. Well made and acted with nice messages that leave you thinking
  • October 27, 2009
A grown-up fairy tale blending realist horror and fantasy to create an enthralling, mesmeric fable that any can connect to.
  • October 27, 2009
I really was expecting this movie to be sort of a fairy tale with frightening creatures and that it was going to be a real treat and everything would end happily ever after. Boy, was I wrong. I know a little about the Spanish Civil War, I know that Franco had about 500,000 people...( read more) executed and many of them were buried in gruesome mass graves. I had no clue how horrible the war really was. When you see this movie you will have to decide for yourself if Ofelia really was making up the story or if it was true. The faun was a little creepy but the Pale Man was so cool. I liked when he was running down the hall to get her and reaching out his hands to see her. I really didn't think she was going to eat the grapes, because I certainly don't remember being that dumb when I was 11. Also the hourglass seemed to be running really fast and I think the door should have shut sooner than it did. This movie reminded me of the book Jane Eyre, because like Jane awfuls keep happening and they don't seem to stop until the very end, similar what happens to Ofelia. It was'nt really explained but I wonder if the faun was supposed to marry the Princess and that was the reason behind his creepiness. Despite this being a very interesting film, it is extremely gory and definately not a childs movie. Captain Vidal is a evil and is probably the equivalent too HItler or Mussolini, he's one bad dude! Overall this was a very interesting film and I would like to see more movies like this one. Also, I would like to know if anyone was seen "Mirror Mask" and if it is anything like this film.
  • October 27, 2009
The movie had it up and downs. I loved the choice of the cast & their performance. The combination of reality and fairytale was also nice, but I expected more from the fairytale side.
  • October 27, 2009
I haven't seen it but from what my friends are saying and from the looks of it, I think this is an awesome movie
  • October 25, 2009
Really cool! Guillermo Del Toro did an excellent job! I loved the effects, the characters, and the story line. Fantastic. =D
  • October 25, 2009
A very unique and outstanding attempt on the combination of an adult fairy tale and realistic resistance war story. Director Del Toro manages to merge those two very different aspects into a very moving, exciting and entertaining movie with wonderful effects and design. Definitel...( read more)y not a movie for children, though. The maneater sequence is one of the most terrifying scenes of recent movie history. But somehow, as well made as all this is, I had a hard time loving the movie. Maybe because it's just so damn sad. That should not stop anyone from seeing this.
  • October 25, 2009
This film was really creepy! Hard to understand since it was spanish, even with the english subtitles. I wasn't very amused with this film at all. It had a good story but was just really off in so many places.

Not bad but not good either. It was OK
  • October 24, 2009
This movie is a tribute to innocence. Each character represents a side. Ofelia and Merssades represent the innocence, Ofelia's mom represents neutrality, and The Captian represents evil.

This truely is a movie for the ages. Each task helps Ofelia become more innocent and more...( read more) knowledgable. Each time the Captian did something terrible his hubris grew and his iminent downfall approached quicker and quicker.

Ivana Baquero who played Ofelia did superbly. She was the essense of Ofelia, and all that she stood for. I fell in love with the character. Hereyes and her face showed more than other actors can show with years of work. Her innocent face and soft features made her a delicate flower to grow in the Underworld.

Maribel Verdu who played Merssades was excellent. I felt like she was the main character half the time. Her performance was so convicted, she had such drive and passion, she lived her character thoughts and feelings.

Sergi Lopez who played The Captian was evil. There was nothing less than evil from him. From the second you first saw him to the last word he spoke he was evil. But the evil took hard work and Sergi had enough talent to bring the evil to life.

Alex Angulo who played the Doctor seemed like an extra that wasn't really needed but was an asset none the less. He carried part of the performance and plot but not by much.

Ariadna Gil who played Ofelia's mother was a neutral character. She didn't like what was happening but she wanted Ofelia and her new son to have a life where they could live without fear. The performance didn't take much skill but Ariadna brought more than possible to the character and their habbiits, their pain, and their mother-daughter relasionship.

All of the faires, the faun, the frog, the hand monster, and the rest of the Labyrinth characters were all creepy and gruesome yet fairytale like. They were magical in a grown-up adult type of way.

The writting and the plot were creative and extrondinarily original. I loved each characters back story and the setting. Each new task coinsided with what the Captian was dooing, and that took work.

The music was perfect. I loved the lullabye and the music. Each piece added to the emotional connections and to the plot.

I loved the directing. Guillermo del Toro brings so much to the table.

    SEE THIS MOVIE!

Absolutely beautiful!!! This whole movie was above my expectations! Stunning special effects, wonderful costumes, fantastic characters. Even though Ophelia dies in the end, it was a spectacular fairy tale.

I fell in love with this movie instantly after the first couple of minutes of watching it. The overall look of it is just beautiful. Loved the story, characters, everything. Very magical.

I cannot recommend this film enough! The entire film is unlike anything I've ever seen and feels so original. What's more, in parts, this film makes me feel so uneasy - something no other film has managed. The creature Pan has to escape in the second task, quite frankly, scares...( read more) the shit out of me. Despite being completely based in a world of fantasy, it somehow manages to feel all too real. Aside from there horror, it's got something of a magical, fairy tail quality to it too. Just watch it, you'll understand what I mean and you will NOT be disapointed. Edit: Oh yes, and don't be put off by the fact it's a spanish film and in subtitles - oddly I think this adds to it's charm :)

woow, i watched this movie expecting a fairytale for kids with a bit darker visuals. I wasn't able to watch the trailer nor read the synopsis so I was pretty shocked with what the film is all about. the visuals, the characters, the language used, the mood, everything fitted in!
