Ok, so this is the scariest film i have ever seen. I literally jumped put of my seat about 3 times. EvRYONE in the threathre were screaming for like a minute it was hard hearing what went next. Iy was like we were in a roller coaster ride. Greatest movie xperience ever. although i had nightmares that night. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILM.

I had such high hopes for this one, sadly i feel let down again much like after watching Pans Labyrinth... Yes its creative, nicely done and oddly creepy at times... but it just fails to deliver. Then come the end i felt even more confused than i was half way through, i thought i was getting to grips with it then it all turns round again... a slight cop out for the director to tie up the end so quickly...

The only thing missing to this one for it to become a masterpice is a few more scares. A side from that, it's a perfect ghost story. The enviroment is well built, the puzzes, the mistery and the paranormal events are in the right amounts and the acting is pretty solid.
The end is sad and touching, and at the same time that is happy. The twist in the story was well hidden until the last moment and it made perfect sense.
Overall, El Orfanato is an excellent ghost story that only lacks on some more scary moments, although the few ones that exist will truly make you jump, even if you see it coming. A MUST SEE movie.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage), a film produced by Guillermo del Torro, is the scariest movie I've seen since Sixth Sense. It's about a mother who tries to cope with his sick son. As if having HIV weren't enough, the boy also plays with imaginary friends.

With its creepy yet magical mood, it reminded me of a film directed by del Torro, Pan's Labyrinth. The dark fantasy movie has already received international acclaim, and The Orphanage will probably follow suit -- I heard from a friend (a Just G endorser) that there'll be a Hollywood version late this year. Just like [REC], another brilliant horror movie I recently reviewed. I just hope these horrors don't get butchered.

Puns aside, The Orphanage is worth watching. Just be sure to watch it with a non-imaginary friend. (8/10)

Great movie, and all loose ends are tied up. One doesn't have to guess why certain things are, they are explained to you, and the acting is superb, it is scary, and not cheezy (cheezy, see grudge 2, and ring 2) this film is wonderful and I sincerely hope the dignity is upheld and no sequal is in the makes.

I rarely bother with Horror flicks but something about the people involved made me have faith. I am so glad as well because this was a really entertaining and expectingly great horror movie.

The premises might not be original but what movie is now days? It's not about how many times it's been done but how good it has been done. The fact that is a foreign movie with subtitles doesn't take away anything from it and who ever thinks otherwise is just a lazy git.

Bleak, depressing and uninspired, yet its not a bad film. However that said, unless your dosed up on a dollop of happy films then you should avoid this film like the plague. If you are looking for a way to have the joy of life sucked out of you then you can't go far wrong with this one. A simple synopsis of the plot goes as follows; deformed child dies, five orphanage children are then poisoned (and all die!), next another child (with HIV) dies, followed by a little old lady (who killed the five children because she blamed them for the death of her deformed child) gets killed in a road traffic accident, finally (thank god), followed by the foster mother of the dead child committing suicide and dying (with the previously undiscovered dead HIV child in her arms). So thats the barrel of laughs you have to look forward with this delightful chucklefest - you have been warned!

It´s not only a great horror but it is a beautiful film in overall, i thought that no other film could shock me in the end that the sixth sense did but here i saw a film that did the storyline along with the shocker in a way that it makes such sense the second time.

We really need a movie like this in our horror genre, i thank anyone who worked on this movie.

Looked nice, had some good acting and some masterfully directed shocks so why only 3 and a half stars? Probably because it reminded me of several other films. Don't let me put you off though, this is worth seeing and I'd take it over any of the increasingly derivative J-horrors (or remakes) that are springing up seemingly every week, any day.

I'm a big fan of horror movies, so I have seen quite a bunch of horror movies from different countries, and let me tell you that this movie was just beyond every other thing you've seen so far. While the story is not really original (It revolves around ghosts and death), the script, the directing and the acting takes the movie to another level. This isn't about scary creatures or unrealistic monsters or creeps, it's all about scary thoughts. The use of light and shadow is so well done and the atmosphere was so dark and eerie that jumped from my seats a couple of times. I don't want to give spoilers but go to watch it mentally prepared and expecting the unexpected. But you'll still get scared.

An intriguing story about a woman who adopts a child and returns to her childhood home which was an orphanage itself. Her son starts playing with "invisible" friends and the mystery starts to unravel.
The plot is more or less linear and there are few sub plots open to interpretation but not vague. Though some plots may bear some resemblance to other movies but it is a sincere effort by the director- Juan Antonio Bayona , supplemented by a strong performance from Belen Rueda and good cinematography.

This movie is about a woman named Laura (Rueda) and her family, after growing up in an orphanage she got adopted and moved and now when she is all grown up she moves back to the orphanage with her new family. Her son Simón (Princep) says that he has seen other children in the orphanage and that they want to play with him. Thinking that they are imaginaryfriends Laura doesnt bother to ask more, but as Simón dissapears strange things happen. She can hear childrens crying and someone walking in the hallway, now begins the search for what really happen to the children in the orphanage and where Simón went..... This was a pretty scary story, got a few spooks here and there and the end was good.

Really well-made. I'm not often impressed by these sort of thrillers but this one captivates all the way through and the cherry on top is the ending.

It was a really good film. It had a very interesting story. Even though I didn't find it as scary as the previews make it appear I think it is still worth watching.

A suspense movie that aims for the heart and the mind...nailing the mark quite nicely. This reminded me of the Others...except it was just a lot smarter and more passionate. I recommend this to anyone looking for an actually intelligent horror/thriller movie. They are a rarity nowadays.

Excelente pelicula. Te mantiene en suspenso todo el tiempo con los pelos de punta. Uno rie, llora, grita...es simplemente maravillosa. No vayas solo(a) a verla!! De las mejores peliculas que he visto de este genero, el cual no es necesariamente mi favorito pero es mayormente por las peliculas mediocres que salen. Esta no es para nada mediocre, es Maravillosa!!

'Uno, dos, tres- toca la pared'- first mention to that scene, which is simply the finest moment in ghost story history. Furthermore, it is the movie's turnaround point- what is so impressive is that after twenty-five minutes or so, I was thinking 'this is a 2.5 star movie, unoriginal, slightly dull, full of unenthralling horror clichés and it will take a miracle to change my mind', and somehow it completely did. As soon as Rueda's kickass character stops looking for help and trying to convince everyone she isn't crazy, the pickup is stunning. She independently pursues her missing son, and sets out to uncover the mystery of the orphanage inside of which have occurred various weird and eerie happenings. Do not be put off by the slow beginning- just await the pivotal moment and enjoy watching a fascinating plot unfold. Perfectly acted, well directed with awesome music and some forgivably predictable but nonetheless interesting twists. It would have a safe four stars if it weren't for that careless beginning...
