Plot: Norwegian director Bent Hamer, who came to prominence three years ago with the idiosyncratic and noteworthy Eggs, has followed up that award winner with an ambitious but largely unsatisfying second fe...( read more  )ature -- shot predominantly in English -- about a young Norwegian sailor stuck in a Spanish port town in the northeastern province of Galatia and his adventures there while waiting for his grandfather's watch to be repaired. Among the people he meets and befriends are motormouthed Australian swabbie Windy (Nicholas Hope, from "Bad Boy Bubby" and "Henry Fool"), robust lighthouse keeper Molina (Spanish icon Francisco "Paco" Rabal), and the sweet-natured Marta (Ingrid Rubio, one of the stars of Carlos Saura's Taxi). As cryptic and freshly offbeat as Eggs, the movie in the end has nothing to offer beyond surface quirkiness, and is far too inscrutable in the telling to offer much more than an extended guessing game for hardy audiences. Self-conscious and forced, Water Easy Reach (the Norwegian title translates as "One More Day in the Sun" but the English moniker is never explained) is a sincere chore, but a chore nonetheless.
