Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

""Enzo Avitabile Music Life" succeeds at conveying one-quarter of its title."
‑ Stephanie Merry, Washington Post
"Features enough music to be worthwhile for fans and curious newcomers, but it's a snooze whenever Avitabile doesn't have an instrument in his hand or a microphone in front of his face."
‑ Mike D'Angelo, AV Club
"Music Life is a film about a personality that carries little personality of its own."
‑ Landon Palmer, Nonfics
"A compelling documentary by Jonathan Demme that makes an altar out of our ears."
‑ Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice
"Music Life starts to seem like a film made for pre-established fans, rather than one likely to win new admirers."
‑ Keith Phipps, The Dissolve
"Demme has not given us an expansive film, and there are spots you wish he'd dug deeper. But there is such a well of emotion that the music alone is almost enough."
‑ Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
"Demme has crafted yet another superb document of musicians at work, one as much about creation-and the sources of inspiration-as it is about performance."
‑ Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice
"A pencil sketch, and little more. For all the obvious optimism and positive energy that flow from him, Avitabile still remains an elusive figure as rendered here."
‑ Brent Simon, Shockya.com
"[VIDEO ESSAY] "Enzo Avitabile, Music Life" is a music lover's dream."
‑ Cole Smithey, ColeSmithey.com
"Even if the film never transcends its subject matter, Jonathan Demme's light touch adds up to a charming portrait, only rarely fumbling into hagiography."
‑ Steve Macfarlane, Slant Magazine
"The fuzziness of Mr. Avitabile's sentiments on boundary-blind unity is echoed in the movie's slack, tag-along portraiture."
‑ Nicolas Rapold, New York Times
"Sadly, this slightly slapdash effort is more in the lower-tier, make-it-up-as-we-go-along range of the hagiographic Jimmy Carter Man from Plains."
‑ Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York
"The film feels like a first draft. But then there is the music to celebrate ..."
‑ Sheila O'Malley, RogerEbert.com
"An engaging portrait of an artist that blends performance and verite footage...should whet your appetite for his music."
‑ Marshall Fine, Hollywood & Fine
