James Berardinelli, ReelViews
Although the basic story is too juvenile and simplistic to entertain anyone with an age in the double-digit range, the themes and underlying ideas are too complicated to capture the attention of someone younger.
-
Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor
Director Chris Wedge falls into the common animator's trap of making the "human" characters a lot duller than the nonhuman creepy-crawlies.
-
Zachary Wigon, Village Voice
With its array of goofy sidekicks (Aziz Ansari as a slug almost runs away with the whole picture) and carefully crafted relationships, Epic certainly manages to tell a compelling tale.
-
Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies
A 3D eco-fantasy whose mantra-like insistence that we're all connected by nature is one of the main things that underscores the abject insincerity of the sentiment as the movie articulates it, "Epic" is very nearly epic in its stifling mediocrity.
-
Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger
Anyone over the age of 7 or so - not to mention their accompanying adults - isn't going to find too much here to truly engage them, let alone linger past the final fade out.
-
Dave McGinn, Globe and Mail
Children may enjoy it, but even they will be able to see all the boxes it systematically ticks.
-
Todd Jorgenson, Cinemalogue.com
... has enough excitement and visual flair to appeal to moviegoers of any age.
-
Forrest Hartman, Reno Gazette-Journal
Beautiful 3D animation coupled with a compelling story and fantastic writing make this the best animated movies since Rise of the Guardians.
-
Bruce Bennett, Spectrum (St. George, Utah)
Beautifully animated forest fantasy for undemanding families.
-
Pete Vonder Haar, Houston Press
I will now review this movie using the lyrics to the song "Epic" by Faith No More, which I think you'll find are eerily fitting.
-
Linda Cook, Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)
I remember, not so very long ago, when most of the protagonists in children's movies were male. The change in recent years has been, well, 'Epic.'
-
Pete Hammond, Movieline
Extraordinary! A magical and wondrous - and blessedly original - animated movie experience for everyone.
-
Steven D. Greydanus, Decent Films Guide
Produces images of poetic power ... The catch is that the world the filmmakers create is far more interesting than the story they tell in it in it or the characters they put in it.
-
Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy
At least it's pretty.
-
Mike Scott, Times-Picayune
It's not quite an animated masterpiece, but it's still a fun, sweet-hearted kid-pleaser that boasts some downright lovely animation.
-
Ken Hanke, Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
Apart from the visuals, it's pretty undistinguished.
-
Jackie K. Cooper, jackiekcooper.com
Great animation, good voice talent but something is just a little flat about the storyline.
-
Jeff Beck, Examiner.com
"Epic" is not a bad animated film, but it is a pretty forgettable one.
-
Michael Smith, Tulsa World
An unfortunate name for such a simplistic, sleepy little eco-goofy animated movie.
-
Bilge Ebiri, Vulture
For all its attempts at wonder and spectacle and play, Epic is mostly a slog.

All manners of poise are lost as the film stumbles needlessly into another "action adventure" full of parodies and humor. Don't get me wrong, I love comedy! It's what made Disney's "Tangled" so refreshing from their previous Princess-movies. It wasn't bad humor either, in fact the jokes were quite well written.
But the story just isn't there with Epic and as the characters (loveable or hilarious that they are), progress through their journey viewers have very little to hang their hat on.
It's unfortunate, BlueSky created a wonderful foundation to build off of and I could see many possible themes of sophistication that just didn't bear fruit. In the end I left the theater ambivalent... on one hand I enjoyed the film but was clearly disappointed that it wasn't the "something more" I knew it could have been.
PS. Ansari's Mub was stellar.

I enjoyed the animation and story of this little movie. It reminded me of Fern Gully and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

This generic tale of good vs. evil has been done countless times with more innovation and appeal. The story is lackluster in the extreme. Couldn't the screenwriters have tried a little harder to come up with something interesting? The best lesson they cane come up with is: "Many leaves, one tree; we're all individuals, but we're still connected." Zzzzzzzz. It's a shame because what the film does have going for it is gorgeous computer graphics. The animators have done a beautiful job giving zest to a script that has none. Epic won't entertain adults and will leave kids wanting more. Children know a quality adventure when they see one and this ain't it. You cannot foist a subpar saga on them and expect a hit. Not surprisingly, out of 8 productions, this became Blue Sky's worst performing feature by a wide margin. It didn't even recoup its $100M production budget in the U.S. Epic is neither majestic nor grand. It's about as far from the word's connotation as you can get. The most glaringly mistitled movie since The LAST Exorcism Part II.

Its story is way too familiar, but that's not this film's biggest problem. Epic is ultimately neither funny nor charming, making for a dull experience.

Much like Dreamworks' "Monsters vs. Aliens," the character design hugs that awkward line between cartoony animation and realistic. It's distracting, but the least of the problems with this movie. "Epic" is boring, irritatedly unfunny, and wastefully under-uses how beautiful and huge a tiny civilization in the forest could look. Watching this in 3D, you feel less apart of this world and more like you're holding a magnifying glass in front of all the action. Most of the time the camera keeps it's distance from the Leafmen making these action sequences difficult to enjoy. Blue Sky Animation, once again, continues to underwhelm.

Mary Katherine: My dad always told me stories about a hidden world. Where brave warriors watch over and protect us.
Given how 2013's Memorial Day weekend is packed with action and comedy for adults with both Fast & Furiou6 and The Hangover Part III hitting screens everywhere, it is only right to have some counter-programming for kids and family audiences. I only wish that the film Epic lived up to its title. As it stands, Epic is perfectly acceptable as a fairly unchallenging film, with some wonderful animation, rousing action sequences, and humor, I just wish it had more to offer. The film feels like a friendly, but action-heavy take on The Borrowers crossed with FernGully: The Last Rainforest. It flirts with a few interesting ideas, but overall, Epic is merely an average and fairly traditional animated feature.

It has been over twenty years since I've seen FernGully, but this is basically the same idea, isn't it? Even so, it is an enjoyable adventure with a good script and fairly good visuals. I was not impressed with Colin Farrell's and Josh Hutcherson's characters or voice work. Amanda Seyfried as M.K. does a better job bringing the dialog to life, but her attractive fish-out-of-water character is likely more an achievement of the animators. Sudeikis as M.K.'s absent-minded scientist father has some interesting tracking technology and I thought these human characters were pretty identifiable. O'Dowd and Ansari as the snail and slug are great as C3PO/R2D2-type comedy relief. Beyonce, Steven Tyler, and Christoph Waltz provide acceptable, if not fresh, interpretations for their roles. I could not figure out what the villains are supposed to be under their armor of rodent and bug skins and exoskeletons. About as much fun as you can have with tiny bows-and-arrows, swords, and birds with saddles.

As generic as they come. I would give this movie one star, but the gorgeous animation gives it an extra half of a star and Christoph Waltz's voice gives it an extra whole star (so the proportions would be accurate).

The film was so so. The animation is very good. The visuals are amazing. I didn't get to see it in 3D, which might have enhanced the film more. The film in my opinion needed a rewrite. It felt like 2 stories were going on here that didn't connect well together. The story with the M.K. and her dad needed to be developed more. I found the whole battle of the forrest more fascinating than the father daughter storyline. I think the father should have been shrunk with the daughter, rather than the daughter shrinking.
The film reminded me of animated films like A Bug's Life, Ant Bully, Antz, and Ferngully. It also reminded me in a weird way of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. The actors are well casted in their voice roles.
Overall it is ok, but the film could have been so much better.

Pleasant is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about the animated film Epic, not the word epic. However, the film is mistitled, but frequently enjoyable and light family entertainment. With dazzling visuals, and some fun characters for the kiddies, Epic is fun, occasionally thrilling, and funny enough for parents to enjoy themselves. Epic is not another animated masterpiece but it provides some light escapist fun and fills the lack of animated films in the multiplex with dazzle. Overall Rating: 74

Epic was a very interesting movie, its a toss up as to if anyone will remember this movie even a year from now, but it still manages to go places that truly were unexpected.

I won't lie when I say there was no real reason for me to see epic. I don't have children and I'm not necessarily an animation junkie, but I don't mind trying out the latest computer animated films as more times than not they have a certain high degree of quality to them despite their markets current over-saturation. Besides epic, which has the distinction and the advantage of opening the summer movie season for the kiddos, we have the annual Disney Pixar offering which this year is a prequel to one of my favorites of theirs, Monsters Inc. as well as the sequel to 2009's surprise animated hit from Illumination Entertainment Despicable Me which could end up wiping the floor with Dreamworks Turbo that opens a few weeks after Gru and his minions no doubt dominate the fourth of July weekend. And while epic will seemingly only be on the same quality level as that forgotten before it gets here Ryan Reynolds vehicle it still has some good qualities going for it. With epic, Blue Sky studios (the Ice Age films, Rio) has delivered a completely creative and imaginative world of characters that suffer only from the lack of originality that is delivered through its story. This may be due to the fact that five different writers collaborated on the screenplay or simply because when you break it down to its simplest form it is as classic a tale of good vs. evil as there ever could be. I don't mind this because it has a few other layers that make the story a little more engaging if not being a little too subtle for the target audience. Still, despite the fact that epic is sometimes unintentionally funny when at its most serious and often can feel like a direct to video feature, it looks like a big studio film and has enough creative juices flowing in its character and production designs that we can forgive it's laziness in terms of story, for the most part.
