To escape the pains of everyday life, to numb our hearts so we can make it through the day, that much easier... This film is full of so much emotion, so much nostalgia, that I'm sure many can relate to. Loss of love, or rather the perception of absent love, is shown through this film that even if the ones we once longed for are absent, who they are, what they stood for and what the brought, will always be tucked away in us, and make us that much more whole. Those who we loved once and "hate" today, are always bound by the emotions we've shared with them, making us whole, long after they're gone, even if we feel the polar opposite. I feel the value of lost love, heartache and losing yourself, it's all part of the bigger picture. To live is one thing, but having that one special person to really make you feel like you're alive, wheher if it's right in front of you, or in the back of your heart and mind long after they're gone, that's the wonders life brings us, to be able to meet someone truly moving and to share any X amount of time with. By far one of my favorite films.

I liked the original story and the creative merit Michel Gondry takes to illustrate the inner workings of Jim Carey's mind as his memories are being erased.
I also like the exaggerated themes in the plot that show how love and heartbreak make a normal person do irrational things we regret. Ever since the Truman Show I've wanted to see Jim Carey in serious roles. I had no idea he was such a well rounded actor. This Film just proves it. Two Thumbs up!

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are a very realistic couple in this sweet but somehow sad movie. Mark Ruffalo and Kirsten Dunst co-star. It was strange to see Jim Carrey in a movie that isn't a screwball comedy, but he was very good in it.

I don't believe I'm saying this, but I actually liked Jim Carrey in this film. He was amazing! I didn't like the film as a whole much, the idea was good, but somehow it was a bit too long (not that it's a very long movie). Oh, and Kirsten Dunst didn't fit in at all.

What an achievement in film. All of the performances are excellent, the camera tricks, cinematography, screenplay; everything's perfect. It works as an offbeat comedy as well as work of art. Bravo, Michel Gondry.

Paaaaa....Trick! Loved the character's romance, boredom, rash behavior, and opting to open their hearts again despite finding out why their minds were spotless.

Unique movie with a real heart. Strong performance from Jim Carrey, who shows once again what a great actor he can be when he switches off the rubber-faced clown routine, and from Kate Winslett. Remarkableand memorable movie

<< "Random thoughts for Valentine's day, 2004. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap. I ditched work today, took a train home to Montauk...I don't know why, I'm not an impulsive person. I guess I just woke up in a funk this morning. I gotta get my car fixed. It's god damn freezing on this beach...Montauk in February, but only at Joel. Page is ripped out...I don't remember doing that. It appears this is my first entry in two years. Sand is overrated, it's just tiny little rocks...if only I could meet someone new." >>

The story starts on Valentine's day, Joel Barish skips work and heads for the shore. He meets Clementine Kruczynski first on the beach and later at the train station and they fall in love...but they do not know that they were once a couple in the past. He soon finds out that Clementine had erased him from her memories, so he does the same...but soon realizes that he still loves her during the erasing process and does everything he can not to lose her.

That synopsis won't make sense to you first time viewers...good, that means you can take in the film with a fresh mind. But I also look back at it and say the same thing...but it will make sense once you see this beauty.

Charlie Kaufman, a name you need to remember. Although he's been on the writing scene for decades and showed himself with Being John Malkovich in 1999, this film to me is his masterwork. A simple outline for a story, everything you hear from a typical romance...a man realizes he loves the woman who broke it off with him and he tries everything to get her back...but given such a refreshing boost with not only the idea of memory erasing, but so much more. Written with such a sharp hand, smart, thorough, emotional and funny, the dialogue is full, acute and real, sharing such emotion, humor and a rare equality with the rest of the films vibrant core...Charlie won the Oscar, I can see why.

Michel Gondry is now an instant favorite of mine. Its the first film I have seen by him...but wow. He truly understands Charlie's vision and makes it his own. What amazes me about him is that all camera tricks, anything that may look like it was a special effect....wasn't. A lot of it was done by himself by simple camera movements and lens changes and the rest was done in the editing room. Such a pure visionary and someone who understands the human core of the story and its amazing characters...exactly what was needed to make this amazing script work.

I can't go on without mentioning the performances. Kate Winslet once again gets stripped of an award with this film and its the most shocking. Her deft ability to flick the switch fluently with her characters personality is astonishing to watch and she has just the right quirks to pull it off perfectly. Jim Carrey delivers the role of his career. He has tried dramatic roles in the past but none like this. A character of such complex emotion, he taps the quiet side of the character with such depth and his facial work is a brilliant addition to the characters broken soul...and of course we get the odd Carrey moment, but thankfully its never his usual over-the-top persona and we laugh naturally at his ability to do so well. They are also both a very unlikely couple, but they work so well together and appear to have so much chemistry.

Unique, tragic, beautiful, masterful. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a masterpiece in the most simplistic word. In a world where the concept of love is fluffy and horribly clichéd in films, Eternal takes it, fucks with your mind and creates something so highly original, yet so poetic, whimsy and beautiful. One of my favorite films of all time.

<< "How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd." >>

I thought this was a very interesting film. It had a very unique story line that was really refreshing. I love when Jim Cary plays serious charters. I think he can blend the seriousness and comedy very well.

This is the perfect romance movie. Not the cliched Notebook, or the predictable A Walk to Remember. This is. Why? you'll have to watch to find out.

So original, fresh, funny, and heartbreaking. When Carrey wants he to, he can deliver, and Winslet does again masterfully what she does so well.

'Eternal Sunshine' is actually pretty funny. Although it stars Jim Carrey, it's more of a romance/drama than a comedy although there are some humorous parts. Kate Winslet is terrific as the girl who Carrey falls for. It's one of the most unique movies, and has one of the best, most original screenplays to come along in awhile.

This is a really touching and deep film. It left me feeling a little depressed, but even then, it's still a really well done film. The Oscar-winning screenplay by Charlie Kaufman really shines. The wonderfully creative direction and editing are amazing as well. The cast is simply spectacular. This is one of the best films of both Carrey and Winslet.

What if this can be done? Just like Robin Williams' "The Final Cut", that was awesome too! I think, maybe plenty will undergo this procedure.

A truly great movie about human emotion and striving to protect that which matters most. I really thought the directing was the highlight of the film and the script was also amazing! That is not to say that Jim Carrey was not good, in fact he was amazing and so was Kate Winslet and the rest of the cast.

Kind of confusing/"trippy" at times, and because I am easily frightened (:P) some parts freaked me out more than a little, but despite all that, this film is extremely well-made and does a superb job at telling an engrossing, frank, and bittersweet story. Definitely a must-see film.

This is one of the best film of 2004. I think that the acting in this film was amazing. Kate Winslet deserved her Oscar nomination but Jim Carrey should have been nominated for Best Actor. The screenplay was awesome. It is a story that obviously isnt cant be really true but is a story that can really be in your imagination. Kate Winslet looked good with her highlighted hair. She looks best in the red hair rather than the blue and green hair. Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson were good in this film aswell. This is the biggest snub of the Oscars, it should have been nominated Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director aswell. Kate Winslets best film and my favourite Kate Winslet film too. The image when Joel and Clementine are lying down on the ice with a crack in the middle of it, this is the classic image of the film. The technology that was used on Joel to erase the memory of his and Clementines relationship was absolutely outstanding. At first, I thought that this would be pretty crap really because some of the people that I have spoken to about this film said it was pretty shit but when I watched I thought this is the best film of 2004 and one of the best films I have ever seen in my life. Another reason why I underestimated this film at first was because Jim Carrey plays a serious character but when he stars in other films like Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar and How The Grinch Stole Christmas he just plays hilarious characters and is a really hyper character aswell. Very good visual effects in this film aswell. There are a lot of scenes where there are a lot of adventurous scenes and puzzling scenes which can confuse viewers of the film.

This is one of my favorite romances ever. Initially I didn't want to see this movie, it looked so indie, but a friend recommended it to me and I loved it. Carrey is so good in this film. It's just a very interesting and inventive story. I was completely enthralled.
