A giddy mix of pretension, melodrama and unintentional trash, Eureka is one hell of a ride. Head-shots, a blow-torch death scene, a voodoo orgy, a rambling court scene plus much more, ensures that this film has something for everyone. Cult film fans will enjoy the oddity of it al...( read more)l and fans of Hackman will enjoy his scene chewing performance. If you like your films odd then this one may whet your appetite

Eureka (1983) was a watershed film that dealt with the theme of how to exist when one's wildest dreams are answered in mid-life. A gold prospector (Gene Hackman) strikes it rich after years of impoverished struggle, but the empire that he builds in the Bahamas turns into a purgat...( read more)ory of disappointment and frustration. Paul Mayersberg's script was self-consciously Wellesian in its depiction of ambition gone sour. Produced under the aegis of David Begelman's troubled reign at MGM/UA, Eureka was shelved for almost two years and then dumped into a handful of cities. The film is full of superb performances from Hackman, Russell, Rutger Hauer and Mickey Rourke, but the mercenary ciphers they played made it difficult for many to connect with the film.

Extremely well-directed with subtle nuances in the camera-work and very top-notch performances. Based on the true-story of the unsolved murder of Sir Harry Oakes (which for me has a native Mauritian connection). You won't be disappointed !

I don't know what to make of this film. Snowy, ice, angel lady who controls the world? Occult. What is this movie? I don't know.

Wildly ambitious, hypnotic and not entirely successful. But it goes to places that no other film dares.
