I'd heard a lot of mixed reviews for this film and now I see why, I'm still not really sure where I stand. I thought some parts were done absolutly brilliantly and they were so moving, whilst other certain parts could have done with a bit more work, I think had they had little more care the film could have actually made me cry, but as it was it just left me a little cold.
The acting was amazing, especially from Redgrave and Streep, but I find it hard to see Patrick Wilson as a romantic lead - probably because the last film I saw him in was 'Hard Candy'. Clare Danes put in a fantastic performance and I thought Hugh Dancy acted his little heart out as the troubled and confused Buddy.
As for certain parts of the storyline, like I said it could have used a bit of work as the emotion they were going for was often missed through some of the dialogue (except when Streep talked to Collette about how we are mysterious beings) and I thought Streep and Redgrave's meeting after so long was a little off, probably because in real life I think Buddy would have been mentioned.
Not a bad move, but it kind of misses the beat it was going for.
A lot of this movie didn't work due to the fact the subject matter has been done before (and better) which made it hard to feel the characters. At times it felt ambiguous.
tear-jerker. but i felt the ending was extremely abrupt. it left me wanting more, basically. but the story line was really sad but believable. at times though, it didnt really seem like anne and harris were it love. i dont think they developed that well enough.
I liked this movie, but I feel like there was such an elaborate set up that wasn't delivered in the end. By that I mean I expected it to be so much more revealing and shocking. I was sort of bored by the end, not to mention disappointed.
This film has a well-rounded cast; however, it is about 25 minutes too long. I found myself fidgeting in my seat before finally stopping the DVD to take a much needed break.
I borrowed it from the library not expecting much, and I was pleasantly surprised. The ensemble cast was good and the soundtrack was wonderful. Some aspects of it were rather predictable, but the ending was lovely.
I liked the movie..the story was good (lots of things going on) friendship plays a big role in this movie (between Ann and Lila) as well as relationships and the mother/daughter thing comes into play as well. I loved the casting..And while I liked the mvoie, I thought some of the mvoie was a little long.
Some scene are really beautiful, like the opening one. Unless that that it's too.. Normal and a bit long. But the acting is good, the story is well written and everything is fine but.. Maybe too conventional. And nothing too impress that much. The music sounds a bit *titanic*
It took me a while to figure out who the characters in this film were. Right away I was disappointed by Buddy's fate and by Anne's impetuousness. I did find some inspiring messages in this movie. It's cool how two real-life mother-daughter pairs were casted in this movie.
great score. great sightings. great cinematographty. bad sequenced story between the 50's and the present. bad choice to put buble's song in the 50's (the song didn't exist). didn't like the kind of "message" they give u at the end to just accept things and stop looking for something else... but it has good things that i really liked
Perhaps one of the top casts I have ever seen. Typical chick flick only a little slow at place. It was a phenominal movie thanks to all of the actors in it but it was also a little dragging and a little hard to finish at times. Not as good as The Hours but a good follow up.
Great cast - but even so, somthing seems to be missing form this story.... Very moving and very sad at times - but not engaging enough to be above average.
I've always loved films of discovery. In this movie, two daughters discover who their mom loved as a young woman - and develop a feeling for how significant that relationship was and still is for their mom.
This movie is frustrating however in that we watch through over two hours to find out what? Ann should have acted on her instincts earlier in her life?
With an A-list cast (Streep, Close, Redgrave just to name a few) and a Pulitzer prize winning writer (Cunningham for The Hours), what could possibly go wrong with this? Nothing really except the inevitable: fans' expectations are set very high and would likely lead to a letdown. But personally I like the story line. And I was excited to see Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer. I feel for the girl, it must be tough being the daughter of one of the greatest actors of all time! But if Natasha Richardson (Redgrave's daughter) was able to make a name for herself in the business then she can also do the same. Claire Danes has acquired such depth in acting (I was only able to notice this in The Family Stone). She has become a very serious actor, and if she continues to choose roles that are multi-faceted, she can become one of the greats. I also liked Hugh Dancy here. His character as the alcoholic buddy and brother could have only solicited despise if not for his brilliant and passionate portrayal of the role.
I didn't understand why everyone was so in love with Harris according to the plot. A story about the ironies of fate and love consquences, and mistakes yet acceptance. Had some great parts in it but It was missing something more. My favorite scene was when Buddy and Ann were dancing. The setting and landscape was beautiful.
weak plot...could of done without the whole "present"....liked it as just a flash back....the acting from the younger cast was much better then the older crowd...not worth seeing!
