Excalibur Reviews and Ratings

Probably the most intense and masterful film telling of the Arthurian Legend this comes almost directly from L'Morte d'Arthur. It's lush with great production values and the actors play it with intense gravitas. There has been no great Arthur movie like it.

My wife loves this movie, I on the otherhand abhor it. Its only redeeming value in my book is Patrick Stewart.
  • September 11, 2009
One of those classic Arthurian legend movies that you just have to watch. Excellent version.

  • August 18, 2009
it was awesome how they were able to widened the "Le Morte D' Arthur"-from an epic to a fabulous movie:)..though there are some scenes that are not appealing to my eyes...the symbolism was clearly portrayed...the kingship and the power...a good movie:)

This is a retelling of the King Arthur legend. It's set in the Dark Ages and the mood and atmosphere of the movie is good but the dialogue is pompous and everyone yells at each other. People must have been hard of hearing in the Dark Ages. The first half of the movie has some goo...( read more)d battle scenes but the second half is all mood and atmosphere and pompous dialogue. All the knights seem to wear plate armor all the time even though in the real dark ages knights wore chain mail and only in battle. Merlin tries to say something funny every once in a while but it's like listening to a Shakespeare play, the language gets in the way. Maybe they took the dialogue from the literature. I guess you would have to take a trip to the library to find out. There are tons of books written based on the King Arthur legend and this movie tries to cram too much of it into one movie.

Despite it's flaws this is still one of my favorite movies. It's everything an epic movie should be.The acting is sometimes to theatrical but never bad.An amazing cast.Definitely my favorite retelling of King Arthur myths on film.Amazing cinematography. The costumes are beautiful.T...( read more)here are a few scenes in this one that i cannot watch without getting goosebumps, especially the one when they are charging while carmina burana plays in the backround.A must see.

wished that Morgana wasn't so evil, but only wicked.
  • July 19, 2009
This movie is based on Mallory's book "Morte d'Arthur", written in 1485. It cannot, of course, fully follow the book, and there are some alterations, but overall it is a good movie. Well worth a watch.

This was a good movie from what I recall from when it came out. Ahead of it's time for alot ov the visual effects. Great costumes and storyline
  • July 15, 2009
An entertaining retelling of the King Arthur saga. Nicol Williamson as Merlin is the highlight along with Helen Mirren's Morgana and the always wonderful Patrick Stewart.
  • June 12, 2009
Mezmerizing, beautiful, yet somewhat flawed film of the Arthurian legend. The best interpretation to date though.
  • May 29, 2009
Classic, my favorite King Arthur story

The Best Movie I have seen.....ever
  • May 16, 2009
I didn't think I would like this film - when it comes to Keltic mythology, I am very protective. And although, this being the case, there is much to dislike about the film - from the goidelic Charm of Making to the fact that much of the film is in fact goidelic rather than Bryth...( read more)onic, the acting is superb - from Nigel Terry's pan-generational Arthur to Helen Mirren's deliciously evil Morgan Le Fay. But for me, far and away the brightest star is Nicol Williamson, whose Merlin is peerless. And for all the goidelic nonsense, there are touches of Brythonic genius, nevertheless - the dragon motif, for instance, and the majickal corvids as a theme for Merlin.

    best movie of all time
  • May 1, 2009
Better than Camelot but worse than Monty Python's Holy Grail. The plot follows the main Arthurian legends with nothing new to add, and almost all the acting is over the top. Why see it? Most of the locations are beautiful, and one guy manages to have sex without taking his sui...( read more)t of armor off. If that doesn't interest you, skip the 2 hour and 20 minute spectacle.

    ahhh.
    my s#hit!
    the best knights period film.
    PERIOD
  • April 7, 2009
    The Horror. The Horror.
Gruesome acting, a script written by 5-year-olds. As an avid Arthurian legend enthusiast I found this to be insulting to the legend/history as written down my Monmouth.
  • April 2, 2009
Excellent movie about Mideval times and King Authur.
  • March 27, 2009
    I am all Arthur'ed out.
  • March 14, 2009
I remember watching this movie when I was growing up. It brought the tale of Arthur to life.
  • March 13, 2009
The worst adaptation of the King Arthur legend I have ever seen, and certainly ever hope to see. Horribly mangled in plot and pacing, with ridiculous and over-powering music. The fight choreography, although perhaps true to life, was dull and uncomfortable to watch. The acting wa...( read more)s atrocious - Patrick Stewart and Liam Neeson must cringe at the memory of their roles in this. The plot lines of Merlin and Morgan were just too bizarre, making Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot background players and forcing plot changes which made no sense. Saying this is based on Malory is an insult.

Absolutely fantastic retelling of the Arthurian legend. It's truly epic in scale and one of my all time favorite interpretations put to film. This is no history lesson,so you have all the magic and fantasy that comes with this myth, all in tact. Although Excalibur has a strong fan...( read more)tasy element at it's core,it's filmed in a gritty realistic way. The battle sequence is very graphic in places, giving the film that realistic edge. The cast are superb,i love Nicol Willamson wonderfully eccentric performance as Merlin, there hasn't been a more memorable Merlin on screen yet. We are treated to a wealth of fine British actors, many up and coming at the time, now major players. A young and beautiful Helen Mirren, Partrick Stewart ( With his own hair ) Liam Neeson,Gabriel Byrne are all on top form. If you want something epic you can get your teeth into, with superb preferences, telling an age old tail. Check this baby out,it's magical.
  • March 9, 2009
Stunning and compelling epic, by turns glorious and savage, gleaming and filthy, tender and bloody. A visual marvel, suffused with a misty, poetic feel. A variety of future stars glimpsed in the cast.
  • March 6, 2009
Probably the best all round (serious) King Arthur movie, in which is told the whole story from Uther's lust to Mordred. Nicol Williamson is the standout as a barmy, crazy and eccentric Merlin, and Helen Mirren is great as Morgana. There are scenes and parts that did make me giggl...( read more)e a few times as I was reminded of Monty Python, but trying very hard to put that film aside, this is definitely worth watching.

ouff..... Le réalisme ! D'habitude j'aime l'histoire du Roi Arthur et tout.... mais là, ouin....
  • February 18, 2009
As the title would suggest, it follows the travels of the legendary sword Excalibur through Arthurian myth, from the violent, powerful hands of Uther Pendragon, to a long-years' rest in the stone to being redrawn by Uther's son Arthur, who uses it to defeat the evil invaders and ...( read more)establish the great court of Camelot and the great Knights of the Round Table. It is there in Arthur's glory years and in his decline, brought on by the love affair between his wife Guenevere and best friend and best knight Sir Lancelot, the Holy Grail Quest which produces many casualties among the knights, and the arrival of Mordred, the son Arthur had by his evil half-sister, the sorceress Morgana. Through it all, the magician Merlin watches over everything, always ready to throw in a Charm of Making when it's called for.

a very good fairy tale.. I am confused why the lady can kept the Excalibur under her bed.. how did she lift up the sword from the stone?
  • January 22, 2009
Not too fond of this one.
  • January 13, 2009
i was mesmerized by this version of the Arthur legend when it came out. It played like a phantasmagorical dream, not the sword & sorcery epic I expected. (This was the time of Conan, remember.)

This was mature and I knew early on that it wouldn't have the feel good storyline ...( read more)that so many try for with this material. (Monty Python excepted.)

This is one of the finer examples of Boorman's direction in an uneven career. His cast was unknown to me at the time. (Except Nicole Williamson, who I enjoyed in the Seven Percent Solution.) But, God, look at them now. Hard to believe you could get them together now. This effectively combined the fantasy summer block buster studios wanted after Star Wars with a more early 70;s sensibility. Holds up even today, and don't get fooled into getting the cut down PG version.
  • January 13, 2009
    extremely theatrical but well done.
  • January 4, 2009
Pretty decent epic, with an excellent performance from Helen Mirren as the crazy-ass Morgana. It is interesting to see the more famous actors now (Byrne, Neeson, Stewart) in the smaller bit-parts. Nicol Williamson's shiny metal skull protector as a bit... flamboyant of the cost...( read more)ume department to say the least. I do wish they would have built up more to the classic Lancelot/Guenevere love affair as it seemed a bit forced with little lead up to it. I would recc'd it to those that enjoy watching the Camelot mythos and medieval films.
