Yum. Elias Koteas, Don McKellar & Atom Egoyan. Great combo. I love it that you don't know what's going on until the very end, when all the strands come together. Atmospheric, powerfull film.
A thightly written screenplay with twists and turns to an unexpected (well unexpected to me at least) ending. The acting is exceptional as the story unfolded in what appears to be a disjointed timeline that in the end comes together in an eye opening conclusion. One of my favorite movies of all time by far! Has to be in my top 10.
I love the way the director sets up situations and tricks you into thinking something is going on, then it turns out to be something entirely different. Mia Kirshner is hot.
It took almost an hour until I realized what it's all about. The story is acceptable but the movie quality could be so much better than this. The result is almost the same as an average erotic movie, nothing more, nothing exciting or thrilling.
Will soon be forgotten. No great acting either.
Fabulously avant-garde, great director and an example of "things are not what they seem." The last piece of the puzzle is revealed at the end where the excruciating pain of loss is revealed along with the illusion that helped to quell it. Probably one of my favorite movies along with Egoyan's "The Sweet Hereafter." Both works of art and great for those of us who like to use our brains and hearts while watching movies.
I liked this movie, but like "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover", I just didn't understand what the hell was going on. I really want to see it again because I feel like it's not one of those 'dupe' films. I just think I need to pay more attention.
Like some of Egoyan's other films, hype and teasers suggest a lustful 'young and the restless' type text (Where the Truth Lies is another). But also, like his other films, Egoyan places himself in the upper tier of contemporary auteur directorship. A stylistic orgy of colours, emotion and tension leaves the viewer breathless and begging for more head fucking.
It's also good to see directors still trusting there closest actors to perform well consistently.
I don't think Mia Kirshner has ever had a better role than this one. Some might find the pacing a bit slow but I like it because it's like waking from a dream state. I love the overlap between the characters and the depth of each one.
