Kinski is great, although the "impulsive risk-taking" that Toback wants to follow inside her, through different types of life and types of movies, isn't written believably. She's his wish-fulfillment fantasy and eventually her curiosity isn't active anymore; she is just an observer of two active, automatic and solipsistic men who are able to preternaturally mesmerize women for no reason that gets exposed on film. Toback tries to go Hitchcock, and tries to go Godard to get from Hitchcock back to Toback, and ends up with a kind of action movie by a hopelessly intellectual pervert. Excellent cinematography except for the panoramic city shots, which belong in stock footage, and which the pervert is using to bore the pants off you.
