I've been a fan of Officespace for much longer than I am prepared to admit. It makes me feel old. Judge's follow up, Idiocracy, was entertaining, but the premise was funnier than the majority of the film. With Extract, Judge has simplified things and allowed the comedy to shine. ...( read more)Bateman is the typical comedy loser, things are bad and in his own twisted way of improving situations, he makes them worse. He's surrounded by a likable and endearing cast of supporting characters, each with their own humourous quirks. The dialogue is wonderful and the situations awkward. Kunis is perfectly cast and it's nice to see Wiig in a bigger role, even if she only shines towards the end. Not quite as observational or cutting as Officespace, but it still has it's moments.

I'm pretty sure Mike Judge used all of his good stuff on Office Space.

The casting is perfect. Bateman, Kunis, Wiig, and even Affleck all superb.
The stage is well set and there are some truly hysterical moments, but we are left in tepid running water here and I just don't know why.
"Office Space" was pure comedy genius with both "in your face" c...( read more)omedy and subtleties that have made it a classic.
"Extract" had some serious potential with the casting and premise as well as some of the gags, but the execution and pacing were just not there.
Some of the scenes just drag on and on long after the laughter is gone (see stoner sequence).
Still, there were enough "laugh out loud" moments that I wanted to see more.
I read an interview with Mike Judge who spoke about this film which he wrote a long time ago and only now got to make it as he wanted to make it so long ago and I am wondering where that vision went.
Some fantastically funny moments, some great comedic acting/timing and some really wasted potential for a superlative comedy.
Good movie. Definitely watch it, but I had hoped for more.

    "He's not a lover. He's not a fighter. He's a small business owner."

Joel, the owner of an Extract plant, tries to contend with myriad personal and professional problems, such as his potentially unfaithful wife and employees who want to take advantage of him.

Filmmaker Mike Judge (look for his fun cameo) goes to the work force well again in this frequently on-target comedy about a frustrated, put-upon extract factory owner (Bateman sealing his hip-to-be-square fate/straight-man of the '00s) who faces sexual difficulties with his wife (a frigidly funny Wiig) and a pending lawsuit by an injured employee that may both gum up the works in his decision to sell the business. Absurdly amusing with a game supporting cast (particularly an out-there shaggy Affleck as the straw-that-stirs-the-drink barkeep bud catalyst to the plots at hand and Koechner steals the film as the next-door-neighbor-from-hell). Some big laughs sprinkled liberally among the smaller, the film succeeds most in depicting how stupidity reins in the workforce but doesn't quite match its bookend cousin, "Office Space".

Ten years ago, Mike Judge burst onto the filmmaking scene with his directorial debut, "Office Space". Although a flop at the box office, it has since risen to extraordinary levels of cult fame. Also well known for his animated series', "Beavis & Butthead" and "King of the Hill", ...( read more)Judge has established himself as the master of satirizing a specific kind of middle-class monotony - from the long hours in the cubicle to standing around the grill with a few beers.

In "Extract", Judge's newest effort, his focus is not on the worker drones, but rather the successful man in charge who has to put up with them. A peculiar subject, indeed, threatening to alienate just about all of an audience. But Judge's satire is far from sharp-edged, and "Extract"'s sole intention seems to be to cash in on a few easy chuckles before we declare the summer movie season officially over.

"Arrested Development"'s Jason Bateman stars as Joel, the owner of a flavor extract company. At his bottling plant, he has to put up with his employee's incompetence on a daily basis - one day, things go so awry that a floor manager-in-training, Step (Clifton Collins Jr.), loses a testicle. When Cindy (Mila Kunis), a highly manipulative con-woman, gets the news, she attempts to cash in on the incident by seducing Step and convincing him to sue the company. This impending lawsuit puts a damper on Joel's plans of selling the business to General Mills, who is not interested in purchasing until things have cleared up.

Meanwhile, Joel's marriage has been far from satisfying. His graphic designer wife, Suzie (Kristen Wiig), is more interested in "Dancing in the Stars" than intimacy. He concocts a scheme that involves hiring a male prostitute (Dustin Milligan) to seduce his wife, which therefore allows him to cheat on her guilt-free. This brilliant plan, of course, was all established while Joel was under the influence of a horse tranquilizer that his burnout friend, Dean (Ben Affleck), had mistakingly identified.

"Extract" is pleasant company - it's charming, inoffensive, and completely light, but yet there's something missing. The implausibility of many of the situations these characters find themselves in becomes increasingly distancing, and to say it ends with a whimper would be an understatement. The film feels more like a series of vaguely connected skits than a fully-realized motion picture.

Mike Judge has always had problems with distribution - "Office Space" wasn't properly advertised, and his last effort, "Idiocracy", was a complete throwaway by 20th Century Fox. "Extract" is being released on one of the worst weekends of the year, and although it's unfortunate that a man with such talents can't find the backing he deserves, this is not the film that'll catapult him to mainstream acclaim. As talented as all the cast is, this particular world only retains steam in short bursts - it'd make for an entertaining half hour series, but as a ninety minute production it's a bit flat.

funny and has a lot of plot turns, however the ending made the whole movie be useless and pointless.
