this was well made. Shu Qui was outstanding as the lead role, she really acted like a concerned pregnant woman (it's weird but she looks like and reminds me of my Viet friend). The ghost was eerie, the way it floats like its swimming in water.
What a movie! The movie was just crafted soo well.. the story so profound.. everything fits without anything being left open.. Shu Qi is just amazing.... her roll was so in depth & full of life and mystery.... some of the scenes in this film made me say " Holy $hit! " idk what they do overseas with horror movies but DAM! I can't wait to get my hands on PART 3 !!!!
A ghost movie? At least that was what the movie when it first released claimed. It also warns pregnant moms not to watch. Because the story is about ghost haunting the mums. Interesting show with a mix of Singaporean actors and scenes. However there isn't much scary ghost in there. All in the mind and just creepness.
Typical Pang Brothers fare: inventive camerawork, thoughtful sound design, well constructed scenes, a few jolts, and a story line that mixes fantasy, flashbacks, hallucinations and dreams with some present tense reality and impossible events (like jumping pregnant off a building roof and ending up with only a few scratches and a healthy baby) and call it a script.
No secret, I guess, that the PB have their own personal logic and/or they can't be bothered with cohesiveness to their stories as long as there's a general thrust of somebody doing something questionable so the scaries can come after them until they fess up in an ambiguous way. I don't care. They do everything else well enough for me to enjoy their films.
Big surprise was anorexic model Shu Qi nailed her part. She was beautiful and convincing.
There is no reason for this film to be called EYE 2 except for capitalizing on the success of the original which dealt specifically with a Blind person getting an eye transplant from ... drumroll please ... someone who didn't die right--the basis of most asian horror--so they haunt until a remedy is found.
I'm pretty sure Shu Qi had 20/20 vision in this movie, but she was messing around with a married guy, causing the wife to commit suicide (didn't die right), comb her hair over her face like a good asian horror girl should so she can effectively haunt the nasty mistress who is pregnant with the cheating husband's child.
The MIA husband of some other pregnant girl also haunts our heroine for some reason. I dunno.
They don't show it but at one point Shu Qi practically bites the face off some other guy. That was fun to think about.
9/10 I went into this with a bad vibe. this was a sequel to "The Eye" , but it wasnt really a sequel. It didnt have the same characters, or storyline. The trailer looked REALLY bad. Pluss I really liked "The Eye" and want really in the mood to see them mess the series up. I was surprised to see not only did they not mess it up, they fixed most of the problems I had with the first one. Now the first one wasnt a bad film, actually really liked it, but it was missing "something". This one however had the extra "oomph" the other one lacked. As I said earlier, Its not a direct sequel. Instead it is based on a asian belief system for life/death that really fits wel with the original's feel (and in a really creepy way). It doent spell out what is going on in the film and does a good job keeping you guessing till the end. Its kinda one of those you might want to see twice. Once to see the film, and try to figure out what the &^%* is going on before they spell it out for you. The second time when you know whats going on and can see the fim in the right context. Definitaly a good film with the same spirit of the original, but with the "creepyness " the first one lacked.
The first movie was a bit better and thats very common with sequels. This one havent really nothing to do with the first flick , only major things.. Overall i would recommend watching other asian horror movies like "the grudge" , "the ring" before these ones.
Gin Gwai or Jian gui translated to enlish is actually seeing ghost. That makes sense when watching the sequel. It seems fairly believable to some extent compared to the first movie. The movie seemed a little weak but not by much. The acting was great and the movie is interesting to watch. There are parts that may get under you skin, and that would be the suicide part. There are two endings, one better than the other, so which ending you see may make a difference.
In my opinion this movie is by far better than the first one. Although the storyline has nothing to do with the original, it is more watchable. It has a better plot, better audio score, a better cast and more scary moments. But the ultimate difference between this one and The Eye is that it has more drama.
Therefore, this isn't just a horror movie, it is also a decent dramatic ghost story.
Even the cast performances are good and solid, the leading actress Qi Shu made an outstanding job.
The movie only has two flaws. The first is on the hospital rooftop scene, come on, even a ghost can't save a person from TWO falls from that hight! That's just stupid. The second is the directors' choice on how the ghosts reencarnate on the babies. We can easly see that the ghost is a person swimming! That's weird and stupid.
Directed by: The Pang Brothers.Starring: Qi Shu, Eugenia Yuan, Jesdaporn Pholdee.
It's a film that took me a long time to really respect and like, once I had seen how amazingly scary 'The Eye' was, I was expecting something in the same tone with 'The Eye 2', but that isn't the case.
But I decided to watch it again and although I still have some problems with the film, I saw the film for what it is. The story follows a depressed woman who has just broken up with her boyfriend and attempts to commit suicide, but she leaves a note so that she can be revived so that she can start fresh. On the verge of death she starts to see ghosts and once she is rushed to hospital and has her stomach pumped (overdose), she realizes that she is pregnant and this starts her off seeing ghosts everywhere she turns....but why around pregnant women? It focuses a lot more on narrative rather than chills, the story is easily compelling to me as it is something that I believe in and something that thoroughly interests me. The Pang Brothers don't seem to quite grasp the concept in the first part of the film but thankfully pick up before it is too late and they focus on the emotion and the characters. In the way of what they offered in 'The Eye', the tension isn't always there, nor is it as chilling, but they do offer some amazing imagery that relates to the story and some small shocking moments. Shu Qi is certainly no Angelica Lee, but she proves herself well and provides a great performance of considerable range.
I love the fact that the film aims for something different and goes in that direction rather then repeating itself (which is something where Hollywood sequels fail) and I'm glad it focused on the narrative and had an amazing story to back it up with intriguing ideas....but I guess I had hoped for what the Pang Brothers had done with there first film. Still a movie many will miss, but it should be seen....just don't expect something like the first film.
Not sure how it measures up to the original, as I haven't seen it, but this was certainly an interesting Asian horror pick. Has pleasing elements of mystery and emotion along with some pretty sweet horror scenes.
I loved the first one, this one not so much. Nothing creepy or scary here, tons of holes in the story and all together dull. Skip it and see the first one.
A decent try making another story about ghosts which isn't totally original but kinda different.
I'm a huge fan of the Asian horrors movies, so this one seems to me too commercial and consequently boring at some times, showing some well known scenes and characters taken from magnificent flicks about this genre made by the specilaist: the asians; still, I will never get tired of seeing them, certainly they won't scare me as much as I did the first time when I saw a movie of this kind; anyway, for this one specifically, it woth it to see a couple of scenes as well as an introduction to the wonderful asian horror movies, but certainly it isn't the best of them.
The female lead actresses in this movie may be frightened most of the time, but those Asian women are just so damn gorgeous. Since I was reading subtitles during most parts, I barely noticed the acting during dialogue, but damn I love Asians (all kinds).
Peppered with scary scenes. But i cant help but to draw some parallel to the Thai horror blockbuster "Shutter". The Pang brothers never fails to inject humanity and social problems to the horror. Expectant mothers, please do not watch this show. It is hauntingly eerie to know that there is a ghost lingering by the side of every pregnant lady.
With a more interesting premise than the first but not nearly as creepy, it is commendable that this sequel is not a retread of its predecessor but quite original in its own right.
There is an elevator sequence in this one as well, one of many inside-references to its predecessor, and while it is not nearly as creepy as the one in The Eye, it gets kudos for both for the reference and for not carbon copying it.
The ending is, all things considered. very moving.
This is a top film!...The story-line is great...The Pang Brothers make awsome films! Highly recommended to people who love Tartan Asia Extreme Horror's!
Creepy, and disturbing in a nutshell. I brought the concept up to a peer and they asked me if I was on crack..., and I'm not. I loved the concept, it was a complex movie, I thought, I didn't get it until the second or third time watching it through but, then, I just loved it.
