the acting wasn't bad (surprise!)...plot was a bit silly (expected!)...but in a giant squid movie, you know what you need? the giant squid. this was mostly tentacles flying out of the water.

Atypical of the Sci-Fi channel, this was better than most of the 'original' movies, but it was hardly original. Van Der Beek is a scientist dispatched to a large fresh-water lake to find out why all the fish have disappeared, endangering the fishing companies that rely on the la... read moreke for survival. When he finds evidence of a large squid in the lake, predictably no one believes him except one woman who saw the squid kill her father when she was only 7 years old.
For some strange reason the gigantic squid has been unseen and leaves no evidence of its existence for over 20 years! Even though squids are nocturnal, you would have expected it to leave some indication that all was not as it seemed beneath the pristine waters of the huge lake. Several mysterious deaths and body parts with suction marks on them mean absolutely nothing to these local folks.
Finally, two of Van Der Beek's biggest critics are attacked by the squid and barely escape with their lives and a piece of a tenacle that could serve calamari to hundreds.
Now all of a sudden, the stupid scientist knows what he's talking about and everybody is ready to help.
The climax is a very bad remake of the squid scene in Walt Disney's "20,000 Leagues under the Sea." There are enough references to Disney's action sequence in "Eye of the Beast" that tells the viewer that it wasn't an accident nor are they trying to do something different than Disney. It's clearly a copy and it was done poorly.
