Definitely one for the fans of Bukowski, that said, it?s not really how I pictured Henry Chinaski and I started to worry towards the beginning of the film but by the end I was more than satisfied. Bent Hamer (great name) does a great job as does Dillon, both obviously love and un...( read more)derstand Bukowski's work. Read the books and watch this film!

A fun and often dismal movie that does as its protagonist does-drunkenly, yet eloquently meanders around from scene to scene with no real plan. Matt Dillon's performance is uneven (especially the narration) but enjoyable as are the supporting performances from Lili Taylor and Mar...( read more)isa Tomei. Factotum is also filled with plenty of fun and random moments and though I'm sure it's supposed to be depressing, it never quite managed to drag me down with it.

I really don't know who Henry Chinaski is and I haven't seen any films based on him, so I can't compare it to anything else, this is a review fr...( read more)om a film buffs view.

Although the pacing is increasingly slow, even at around 90 minutes, each character is developed and surprisingly interesting and it kept me hanging on. Matt Dillon gives a truly outstanding performance as Henry Chinaski, or renamed Hank in the film. He injects heart and soul perfectly into the character....or at least what heart and soul there is, he plays a man who basically hates everything around him, he can't keep a job for more than a day, what money he gets goes to drinking, he doesn't care for anybody, especially women and is just out for sex, most of the time he writes about 'everything' and his alcoholism affects a lot of things in his life. The man at the end of the day is someone you would probably hate in real life, yet the script injects a low-brow comic humour into the character and we slowly study him through the film and with Matt's brilliant performance, we feel for the character, even if at times, its the way that he wants to be.

Although the movie isn't outstanding by itself, it has some great insights in its dialogue on life, hilarious low-brow humour and an excellent performance from Matt Dillon.

Matt Dillon's is totally cool. The dark humor along with the depressing tone of this film, which is by itself the most personal work (and possible portrait) of Charles Bukowski, is a great combination. very recommendable. Lili Taylor is also worth the watch.

Bukowski's alter ego Henry Chinaski goes from job to job, drinks and drinks, women to women. His big talent though is writing. If you're looking for something to find in this film, you won't find it because it all boils down to this one man's life, his losses and the drinking. Oh...( read more), such drinking.

Boring movie that has very little to offer.

Henry Chinaski is one of my favorite characters in cinema. And Matt Dillon had performed it perfectly, much more better than Mickey Rourke in Barfly (1987). The colors and decorations were beautiful and the music was great.
