Plot: Blanche, a phony psychic, is hired by wealthy Julia Rainbird to trace the whereabouts of her nephew, who'd been given up for adoption years earlier and is now heir to a fortune.
Family Plot is the final film directed by Alfred Hitchcock who died 4 years later in 1980. It tells the story of a woman pretending to be a psychic and is hired to find an elderly rich woman's long-lost nephew who is her only living heir. The fake psychic and her boyfriend attempt to track down the man and it turns out that he and his girlfriend are jewel thieves. The plot has some holes, most notable almost everything that happened in the first cemetery scene, but overall it's pretty good. It's not the most interesting plot one will find in a Hitchcock film, but certainly not his worst.
The film stars Karen Black, Barbara Harris, Bruce Dern, and William Devane. They all do an adequate job although it's nothing great. There's some bits of acting that aren't all that great, but most of it is at least decent.
While this is not Hitchcock's best or even close, it's still a pretty good movie. Unfortunately, Hitchcock's declining health prevented him from filming The Short Night despite the fact he had it all set to go before deciding not to. Still, Frenzy and Family Plot weren't a bad way to go out and are vastly superior to his antepenultimate film, Topaz.

UP NEXT: My 100th film, the 1930 Best Picture winner All Quiet on the Western Front.
Absurdly silly compared to Hitchcock's other films, especially the bumpy car ride down the hill, but enough mystery and suspense to keep me entralled.
Better than other Hitchcock movies that I've seen but still ... , Honestly I'm losing my interest to see his other works
The master's farewell it's a hell of a fun thriller/dark comedy. great cast and memorable winks, like the Barbara Harris' one at the end. great soundtrack by John Williams. It's true Hitch was old and tired while making this film, but many young filmmakers would die to have a bit of his talent. the ending and the mountain road scene are classics.
Nicely composed thriller about the lives of two pairs of con artists who's paths become eventfully intertwined. Endearingly lighthearted whilst retaining Hitchcock's classic suspense. Great scene on a mountain road.
In this film it was a pretty interesting movie, and while there are some attempts at comedy which I don't think work very well, it still has an interesting enough story to make up for it.
diverso dal solito Htchcock (e anche meno bello). ho adorato le parti anticlericali e gli smadonnamenti del tassista XD
Not only is this one of Hitchcock's best it is also one of his funniest. Watch for the intentional bad special effects.
Alfred Hitchcock's last film is by no means a masterpiece, but it is an entertaining, well-crafted little story--a pleasant dessert to an often dark and substantial career.
(Incidentally, it's especially easy to see Brian DePalma's oft-referenced debt to Hitchcock in the film's complex early scenes--scenes that defy Hitchcock's advancing age and increasingly poor health.)
I dunno. It seems Hitch was out of it or bored...but maybe a parody of bad American TV from the 70's?
One of Hitchcock's later films, this doesn't really bring anything much to the legacy of the great Hitchcock. This just does not offer anything new.
A phony psychic and her taxi driver boyfriend launch a scam to make 10,000 dollars off an old lady by making her think they are in contact with her heir. As it turns out, they do make contact with the heir, who is a kidnapper and a jewel thief.
The whole last half hour was very predictable, and perhaps showed the signs of a man coming to the end of his career who had made all his great moves on screen already.
One of my favorites...and Hitchcock's last. :( I think this film is so funny, with a great score, GREAT acting with some of the most underrated and underused actors ever. Karen Black is pitch perfect as the cold Fran. Bruce Dern is so smarmy as George. William Devane is pure evil and the wonderful Barbara Harris steals the show here. What a performance. Full of Hitchcock comic touches...he certainly redeemed himself after Frenzy.
Family Plot was Hitchcock's last film, & it wasn't as bad as I expected. The first few minutes are quite slow, but once the story sets in, its quite fun & amusing to watch. Reminded me of Arsenic & Old Lace, but just not as good. Still enjoyable, & well worth watching for anyone who is interested in Hitchcock, but its just not his best.
I always wanted to see this film from start to finish because I'm a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock and of actors, Bruce Dern and Karen Black.
Minor Hitchcock to be sure, but it's still such a well-done film that it outdoes a great majority of mystery thrillers in Hollywood today. Blanche is an adorable character, the villains are exciting, and all of their performances are spot-on. The plot is thoughtful and excitingly coincidental - a little predictable, perhaps, but the movie is a bit of a parody of its genre.
However you choose to view it, though, it's still a great success. Hitchcock's a genius.
hitchcock's last movie.
not quite the brilliance of his past films, but lots of fun, with a little bit of camp. not to mention KAREN BlACK!
Hitchcock's last work. A comedic jewel caper flick that holds your attention, but doesn't match up to the epic successes he previously had.
I know, I know. Hitchcock's last film and the critics did not like it. Still, Karen Black and Bruce Dern make a good pairing and the story is lots of fun if you don't take it too seriously.
Very good swan song for Alfred Hitchcock. A lighter side of the master of suspense. I found it very enjoyable. Bruce Dern and Karen Black were rather amusing together and played off of each others antics beautifully.
i got quite a shock when i reached the credits at the end to find that it was an Alfred Hitchcock film, and found myself back-tracking over the film, trying to see where i found familiar themes to suit some of hitchcock's other films, and noted plenty. not a suspensful as it is clearly meant to be, it was all good fun, and was actually quite funny, which i was expecting. the performances are quite good. the old style cars were beautiful, and i love the idea of the room in the brick wall, in the baddies' house. it has its uneven moments, and its brilliant momnents, barbara harris steals scenes with her 'psychic' antics, and bruce dern has the second worst hair-do i've ever seen.
This board looks lonely. Be the first to talk about "Family Plot" !
