On a mission to avenge his family's injustice at the hands of the ruthless land baron Joseph meets the landlord's daughter and the two run off to America together where the girl expects to claim a piece of land for herself in the Oklahoma Land Rush. After she is robbed on the boat that carries them to America, they arrive with nary a penny and struggle just to keep their heads above water in the slums of Boston. After a series of serious set-backs they do eventually work their way out West, where Joseph must fight to realize his dream and claim a piece of the American Dream for himself -- and where they finally acknowledge their love for each other. Shot in wide-screen Panavision, the movie was filmed on-location in Ireland and Montana. ~ Iotis Erlewine, Rovi

Heather Boerner, Common Sense Media
Intense, treacly Cruise-Kidman immigrant epic.
-
Emanuel Levy, EmanuelLevy.Com
Poorly written and simplistically acted, the film also shows little chemistry between real-life couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
-
Clint Morris, Moviehole
An enjoyable, highly-romantic, somewhat witty film
-
Michael H. Price, Fort Worth Business Press
Overblown would-be epic of the Western frontier.
-
Steve Crum, Kansas City Kansan
Overlong Ron Howard epic with Cruise and Kidman.

Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice
An old-fashioned film carried into our hearts with breathtaking scenery, a swelling soundtrack, and large-scale dramatic happenings.

Kevin A. Ranson, MovieCrypt.com
Well, it WAS better than "Days of Thunder"... sort of.

Ron Howard's 'Far and Away' is nothing different than other films you've seen before in this genre. It feels neither fresh or revolutionary. However, Cruise and Kidman turn in enjoyable performances and are able to heighten the entertainment the script sometimes fails to provide. Few scenes stand out and grab your attention, but for the most part 'Far and Away' is never anything to remember. As a talented director, Ron Howard may be disappointed with such a mediocre attempt. -

The year is 1892 and Irish immigrants Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) and Shannon (Nicole Kidman) have arrived at a shipping port in Boston, greeted by enticing faces who offer them jobs and safety...for a price. Joseph has used Shannon to help cross the Atlantic; there's a long prologue in which their characters are set up. Essentially they become a romantic couple as time progresses, even though they're very different from each other - Joseph being from a poor upbringing and Shannon from a prosperous one. Joseph gets a job as a boxer for the local Irish ghetto warden boss, while Shannon becomes a dancer/stripper at one of the warden's bars. The movie was directed by Ron Howard and was one of those post-marriage Cruise/Kidman movies. It got some hype when it came out, and then it died. Props must be given - direction is good and the sets are realistic. It really evokes the late 19th century and most of the stuff seems genuine (reminded me a bit of "Gangs of New York" to be honest). However, the acting is atrocious. Cruise can't sport a consistent Irish accent for the life of him. Kidman is okay but I've seen her give far more convincing performances. Overall this love story set in immigration America had potential and is pretty to look at, but the tale is a bit alienating due to the poor performances from the lead actors. -

A decent but very forgettable love story between two Irish people who want to be together, but in America where land is available. As usual, both Cruise and Kidman are excellent in their respected roles, and the ending is well put-together. But it's nothing more than decent sadly, it is predictable and formulaic to a degree. Ron Howard, Cruise, and Kidman have all done far better. -

I enjoyed seeing the acting of young Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It was a fun and watchable western about Cruise and Kidman leaving Ireland to own land in America. -

Director Ron Howard's sweeping tale of Irish immigrants who come to America in search of land in the late 1800s is an excellent entertaining saga. Tom Cruise and his then real-life wife Nicole Kidman make their fantastic performance as a bickering couple from different social classes who find themselves adrift in the New World. Cool boxing scenes without the boxing gloves. -

Cruise and Kidman display all the charisma and chemistry of a root vegetable in an unbelievably dull and embarrassing period piece in which nothing of interest happens apart from ridiculous accents. Dreadful. -

It was interesting and kept my attention. Parts were just cheesey but I liked the action in it and I loved how it was tasteful and didn't have to have sex scenes to be a romance flick. -

Let's just say I was watching this in class a few weeks ago and was excited that Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were in this film together, but I wouldn't call this a masterpiece as everyone in this website thinks it is for I would like to point out some flaws with this film. While the pacing moves at a wonderful brisk pace along with Ron Howard's lavish direction, the movie, while faithfully depicting the Land Run of 1893 event perfectly, suffers from a clichéd romance between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (the same thing would be used in James Camerons "Titanic" except the romance between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet was done pretty flawless) and dialogue so tedious it would make you cringe throughout the film. Far and Away, however, has captivating and flawless music from the wonderful John Williams himself (the song in the ending credits "Book of Days" was pretty decent) and also has some astounding action scenes including a very creative one revolving the 1893 Land Run that has horses running throughout the plain-lands. The cast is also pretty good. Tom Cruise did excellent as Joseph, Nicole Kidman did great as Shannon, Thomas Gibson did very good as Stephen and Robert Prosky did a decent job as Daniel. If fans are interested in Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, then this is for you, but only if you studied the historical event in Geography. Otherwise, stick to Titanic. Rating: 7.2/10 -

There is no evident chemistry betweenTom and Nicole, yet again. And the film feels painfully long...
