Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Reviews and Ratings

The main reason I wanted to see this is because it is on the top 250 (IMDB). Another reason is that I rather enjoy Johnny Depp's acting. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this movie. I do like drug related films but this movie just didn't do it for me. I wanted to like it, but fast ...( read more)forwarded through most of it.

Strangest but one of the better performances by Depp.
  • November 21, 2009
Johnny Depp and Benicio do an amazing job at portraying Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, probably my favorite Johnny Depp movie of all time.
  • November 20, 2009
One of the worst films I've ever seen.

Wild enough to be a delirium journey, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is, basically, the conglomeration of the innovative technical aspects and camera angles that established the bases of Gilliam's unique, brilliant signature. Therefore, the film is not as masterful as its British...( read more) (and even American) predecesors, but it is one of the most effective mindf*ck films of the decade, with what may be Johnny Depp's best performance.

    86/100

It is one of the few movies that actually capture the mind of someone. The feel of it is so out of its mind that it could only belong to that of Hunter S. Thompson. I love the commentary about Las Vegas, it's not just another complaint about how horrible or fun it is. You get to ...( read more)feel the escapism it brings, the lack of purpose or direction. Everything is just so one dimensional and skewed, much like a story you'd hear from someone. I loved Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro in this, they're what truly sell the believability of the story. They play some of the most convincing wackos i've ever seen.

This movie was very entertaining. I honestly, still dont quite get what the storyline is...after just finishing it, but maybe if i watched it again id get it more out of it. Anyway, a sheer good comedy and i liked the movie poster. And im pretty sure Spider Man was the hitchhiker...( read more), but hell, im too lazy to look that up.

    Awesome movie!
    Own it
  • October 17, 2009
Do not see the appeal of this movie at all. Was it because of the book and the shear love of the author? I found it just completely ridiculous, over the top. It seemed to glorify drug abuse and there was no discernible plot.
  • October 17, 2009
The film looks great, but it lacks a story (maybe I should have been high?). I just didn't get it.
  • October 16, 2009

Just loved this movie crazy as possible and so truly Johnny Depp all the way through. People get lost in his looks but when he plays crazy characters you realize how awesome of an actor he is the parts are not for him he is for the part. Truly molding himself into the character...( read more) he is meant to play. Major props!!

Je comprends pas pourquoi c'est un film "culte". C'est long et la première heure est ennuyante. Et puis, j'ai pas trouvé ça très drôle...Cependant, la réalisation est bien et la direction artistique aussi.

    felt like this at times!

I think im gonna have to get back to you on this one...
    Well then...
This movie certainly doesnt match up to my expectations.I had no idea what to expect.I knew Terry Gilliam directed it and thats about it.No idea Del Toro was in it until about 10 minutes in which i guess meant...( read more) that he did a great job as Gonzo. The plot is sort of sporadic as you would expect from a psychadellic road trip from the bizarro dimension and theres some nice little cameos.Depp is closer to a Loony Toons character than an actual human being which is always fun especially when he is met with an authority figure. This movie is the closest thing to actually taking drugs.
  • October 2, 2009
PRETTY GOOD FILM. DEPP'S CHARACTER KIND OF LOSSES IT'S PUNCH NEAR THE END, BUT DEL TORO IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
  • October 1, 2009
As usual Johnny Depp steals the show in this Cheech and Chong style comedy following two druggys on there drive from LA to Las Vegas and all the hillarious situations the two main charaters keep getting themselves into. Overall this visually amazing hilarious drug film lacks a p...( read more)lot decent plot, constant clear dialogue from Depp's character and direction and resolution in film. But this film makes up for most of it from its witty dialogue, excellent special effects and all the gut bustingly funny situations the duo get themselves into. If your a fan of either Cheech and Chong, Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp or drug comedy's in general this film is without a doubt worth viewing. Or even if your just looking for a fun film to watch at home you will almost definitley not be dissapointed

Having read the book first, I became a fan of Hunter S. Thompson's writings. The highly exaggerated recollection of events just delves you into a realm where you don't know what's surreal or reality. The film was able to capture just that. Even though it doesn't strongly suggest ...( read more)the reasons of traveling to Vegas, it was still an epic journey that sucks you into Raoul Duke's realm, or should I say 'Hallucinations'.
The more you watch it, the more you find in this movie. There's always a line you've missed, or a strange character you never saw till the third viewing.
A highly recommended experience if you're ever bored. The book is even better, if you're able to keep up.
  • September 7, 2009

  • September 3, 2009
How can I put this in the most cliched manner possible?
This is a trip that must be taken, it's that simple. Far from being merely a Vegas style drug romp, this film fills in the empty spaces and questions inevitably left by the characters in their aimless drug-ridden meanderings...( read more). Hunter Thompson's brief, yet poignant, passages cut right to the heart of the era and the feelings that pervade, while Gilliam's always lavish visuals act the antithesis of the realities that are so glaring on every television.

"1965, the great San Francisco acid wave. I recall one night in a place called The Matrix. There I was. Mother of God, there I am. Holy fuck. Uh, clearly I was a victim of the drug explosion. A natural street freak. Just eating whatever came by."

Unless you have experie...( read more)nced what this movie generously offers, a lot of drug induced babble, you won't find this movie all that interesting. It is an acid trip of a ride mostly seen through the eyes of Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp). Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro), Raouls lawyer, provides hilarious and equally induced mayhem himself. I find his character to be a lot more entertaining than Depps. It really is funny to watch both of them go into bad trips of their own and have one try and calm the other down. Paranoia at it's finest.

"With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind every narrow door in all his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts, are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know."

The outfits alone should have it's own 5 stars. A depersonalization trip through bat country.
