A classic example of "Not all animated films are for kids."

This is a 2 star movie really, with an extra half star for the effort, the premise and the sheer curiousity value of watching an animated detective story revolving around talking cats and featuring both a vague visual similarity to old disney animation ('this ain't the aristocats...( read more)' the main character says at one stage) as well as dollops of cat sex, cursing and fairly violent imagery. I think I've sold it to you already. but seriously, its not that good.

odd movie, but VERY good moral

I'll admit, I was skeptical. I mean, a murder mystery where all the characters are cats? Seriously? But the violence, cursing, the whole noir/detective-story feel to it, plus the crazy dream sequences kept it interesting and entertaining throughout. Who knew an animated movie abo...( read more)ut talking cats could be so good?

Something gets lost in the translation here, however, the story is interesting enough to drown out the few problems the story does have. The mythology surrounding the tale is very interesting in itself.

Interesting and different than other cartoons. Not for kids though.

In case you've never heard of this one - it's an animated thriller from Germany (that, as far as I know, hasn't been officially released in America). Unlike most American animated movies, however, this is NOT a family movie - it's actually quite, um... "mature".

That's not a fl...( read more)aw in and of itself, mind you - I'd like to see some more adult-oriented animated movies, personally. The problem is, some of the more adult content (gore, sex, etc.) feels gratuitous and unnecessary (i.e. the cat sex scene - it winds up important to the plot, but it's surprising how graphic the actual scene itself is; it's not pornographic or anything, but it's still pretty, um - detailed).

Unfortunately, once the shock value wears off, the other flaws become more apparent - namely, pacing problems (the movie feels really rushed), questionable character decisions (like the main character suddenly helping out characters who, literally seconds earlier, were actively trying to kill him) and some really terrible dialogue (although I watched an English dubbed version, so I assumed something might have been lost in the translation).

It does enough right to make it worth a look, though (if you can find it) - some of the themes are interestingly done, there's some genuine scares, and some scenes have a great sense of atmosphere to them. Still, if you can't find it, it's really no big loss.
