I remember this film from my youth and I recalled it to be awesome. An interesting plot, about afterlife experiences and sins from the past, with a future all-star cast failed to deliver big this time, but manages to entertain thru its whole duration.
The set decoration along with the cinematography was the highlights of the movie.
"Today is a good day to die," is the opening line of this excellent thriller. The idea is very weird but completely original. It tells the story of some young medical students who start to experiment with near-death experienecs to, well, experience. This of course means dying and then being brought back after some amount of time. But after they go under and come back, their pasts sins that they saw during their near death start to haunt them in their everyday lives. Its a very spirtiual story line, but thank God it isn't religious. I think if it was religious it would be too over complicated and some people may look at it differently for what it really is, some darn good entertainment. The most intresting character story is Keifer Sutherland's. He has the more tormented experience as his sin is worse than then everybody else's. I won't say what it is because it gives away the mystery to his story. Julia Roberts story line is probably the next most intresting as it is a more personal one than any of the others. Kevin Bacon's storyline is not incredibly intresting but it is a good story line to drive the plot, as he is the one who discovers what you have to do to be rid of these sins. The only other person out of the five medical students that goes under is William Baldwin. I think his storyline was taken to seriously and should have been used for laughs as it is ont very serious at all and doesn't exactly cause him serious personal trauma like other characters. But you do get some comic relief from all the tense going ons from Oliver Platt, who is the only one who doesn't go under. This is the best Joel Schumacher film I have seen (Though I am yet to see The Lost Boys). Wether that is nescesarily saying much, you be the judge, but I think in some cases he is an underrated director. Yes, he murdered the Batman series with Batman and Robin (but without that, we wouldn't have the Chris Nolan ones), but I really liked Batman Forever beacuse you could see what he was trying to do and he pulle dit off and made a nice change from the Tim Burton movies. Here he shows his true potential using great use of the spiritual side of the story by using very fixed eerie mostly blue lights for most of the surroundings. The scenes that stand out are really the scenes i which they go under. They are all different for all the characters whihc adds a personal element. Plus, it really makes you think, what does happen when you go through an experience like that. This adds more curiosty to the film and does grab your attention. The cast are extremely likeable and make you care about these characters, they all bring something to the plate as it were. But what I would have liked to know was what really got these people intrested in doing this. It would have helped if abit more depth into the origins of the story. It does seem to dive straight into it, which in some films is good but this one needed something at the beginning to give reason for what you're about to see, but it ends up not really being looked at. But everything else about the film is great, and I really do recommend this, just don't og getting any ideas from it!
wow i have not seen this movie in ages but thought that this was a bloody freaky movie,,.this has a good cast of characters throughout this movie...i think that the director of this Horror, Mystery & Suspense movie had done a good job of directing this movie because you never know what 2 expect throughout this movie..this has a good cast of characters throughout this movie...this is a freaky movie because you never know what 2 expect throoughout this movie
Watching this again recently, I was struck by how badly it has dated. Time has not been kind. It tries really hard to be cool but ultimately we know that it isn't and there is a lot of cringeworthy dialogue which makes it unintentionally funny.
In spite of all this, I still have a lot of affection for this film. I really like the casting (even Julia was ok in this). The plot is totally hokey but a lot of fun and whilst there isn;t anything remotely surprising or different, Schumacher tells the story well and it's always an entertaining watch. For me, the scariest thing about this film is the fact that the Bacon just doesn't seem to have aged at all.
This is a lot of fun to watch and any film that has Jack Bauer getting his ass kicked every 15 mins or so by a ten year old has to be worth a watch right?
my mom made me watch this when i was 5 and it scared the shit out of me but only because it was recorded before pet cemetary but i still love this movie XD
With such a great cast and awesome movie, this movie had a lot of potential. But, alas, the director was ineffective in utilizing it. By doing so, this movie was sadly reduced to film that was trying way to hard to be intellectual, but just couldn't. On a personal note, I just love the place where they would preform their experiments.
Pretty bad movie, actually, yet the thought of making amends is compelling. I actually tried to contact an old classmate to apologize for bullying him. He never replied. Go figure.
We have all wondered what death would be like. Would past mistakes come back to haunt us. Five medical students decided to find out for themselves live to tell the tale. An enjoyable film and proof that something's are best left alone.
I hadnt seen this before...it was a great movie, some how I'm having difficulties to make up my mind if this is a realistic movie or not..but it sure is very thrilling and scary in a realistic way..great actors which makes the movie awesome..
Stumbled on this movie the other night while flicking through the channels. It has an interesting premise and a very interesting beginning.
Five medical students, led by Kiefer Sutherland's character, want to know if there's any life beyond death. They experimented on themselves, stopping their heart beat for a few minutes before being revived again. The problem is they brought something with them when they're back.
The opening scenes were very intriguing, which was why I watched it. The subsequent story is a bit predictable, but as far as suspense/horror goes, it is quite gripping.
I like Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts here, their characters are interesting.
This movie is about being an obnoxious asshole in the 90?s. Unless you are an obnoxious asshole from the 90?s, you might not like this boring ass assholary stupid ass dumb shit fucking assholes movie.
it was i'm not really sure i mean it was good acting and all but i dunno there was just something i didn't like about it i think it just wasn't really believable enough and i think it takes i think a certain kind of actor to pull off those rolls i'm not saying that there not good actors there are all very good and they played the parts as well as they could but i just don't think they were exactly the right the right kind of actors.
Horror films nowadays just have no imagination. You'll agree after you've watched Flatliners. Aside from a good ensemble cast this movie brings a story that intrigued me from the start. Anyone who says they've never wondered what was on the other side of life is lying, so even though Flatliners doesn't offer an especially exciting answer, it keeps you drawn in. I enjoyed the way it played on good and evil as well. The acting was obviously good, particularly from Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts, but the whole cast seemed to have pretty good chemistry. The actual content of the story wasn't always especially interesting or sensible, but there was enough to keep you guessing throughout much of it. The thing I enjoyed most about this movie though, was the environments surrounding each scene. It was as if the places were characters themselves (the paintings on the buildings were very affective). Impressively Flatliners complished this without sacrificing a few scenes that make you jump a bit. Definitely worth checking out at least once.
It's good but not that good. Would people in their right minds be arguing over who gets to die next? Oliver Platt plays the only sane person in the whole movie.
01-20-08 --All Time Classic!!! Kiefer Sutherland is awesome in this movie. It has a great cast and the plot is very interesting to follow. This movie suggests that once you die you atone for your sins before you move on to the afterlife. Seems viable. One thing... Joe the video camera guy never atoned for his sins. Maybe they left it open for a sequel? Never happened and most likely never will. Plus what's a movie without Kevin Bacon?
A needlessly oppressive and confusing atmosphere that borders on the neurotically symbolic... as well as aggressively two-dimensional characters... and a group of sub-plots that attempt to blanket every possible pathos to ensure you are personally involved and moved by the films singular, unrelenting moral.
What that moral happens to be, though, is the crux of the film... and by being totally unclear, the film can neither fail nor succeed. It just ends up being a good-looking let-down.
It collapses under its own intriguing premise, like a person who can't sidestep an oncoming train because of sheer confusion.
