Flawless

Barry Miller, Chris Bauer, Christopher Bauer, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Who could possibly be the target audience for Flawless? Walter (Robert De Niro) is a homophobic policeman who suffers a stroke while responding to gunshots in his own apartment building; for speech th...( read more  read more... )erapy, he starts taking singing lessons from his neighbor Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman of Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and Happiness), a gay drag queen who's saving up money for a sex-change operation. However, there's another story line that takes up at least as much time as that one, about a drug dealer and his goons trying to find money that was stolen from them, brutally beating up everyone in their path. Furthermore, the local gay community (in New York City) seems to consist entirely of drag queens and Log Cabin Republicans, and one of Walter's cop buddies goggles at drag queens as if he's just arrived from the middle of Iowa. All the characters--including various prostitutes, drug dealers, a hotel clerk who's a weaselly mama's boy, as well as the aforementioned drag queens and cops--are horrific stereotypes. De Niro and Hoffman, both extremely talented actors, do all they can to overcome their cliché-studded dialogue, but they never seem to be in the same movie. Written and directed by Joel Schumacher, whose eclectic career includes Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Flatliners, and St. Elmo's Fire. --Bret Fetzer

Contrived nonsense. Robert De Niro & Philip Seymour Hoffman are better than this. Joel Schumacher however, is not.

Another great film from Joel Schumacher, with a great performance from De Niro (as always) who very convincingly played a Stroke patient, but even more impressive was the performance given by Philip Seynour Hoffman, who delivered (in my opinion) his best performance to date. Nothing special, nothing extraordinary. And surely enough not flawless.

But full of great, memorable quotes ("Life's a bitch, so I became one, honey") and some brilliant scenes (where Hoffman and DeNiro have an argument and they call each other only with words that begin with ...( read more)-f) Needless to talk about the performances, since Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert DeNiro are two of the greatest actors of american cinema today. But Hoffman shines more in this particular movie, he actually overshadows DeNiro, although DeNiro's role was harder to deliver.

However, it's a movie you forget after you watch it and for the most part it's just ridiculous when it should be serious.

You won't stop loving Phillip Seymour Hoffman... but also you won't stop wondering if maybe (just maybe) De Niro is a liiiiitle bit overrated these days... just a thought...

Philip Seymour Hoffman's master-class performance as troubled drag queen Rusty sadly goes to waste in this laughable film. "Rusty" stands as the lone well-written character in this pathetic "drama".

Philip Seymour Hoffman versione drag queen e De Niro ormai disabile dopo un infarto.
