Based on the award-winning short Flying Lessons, Fly Away tells the moving story of a single mother, Jeanne, grappling with the challenge of raising her autistic teenage daughter, Mandy. As Mandy becomes more and more unmanageable, so too does Jeanneʼs life. Over the period of two weeks, Jeanne is confronted with the most difficult decision a parent can make: to let go, allowing her child to grow, but also grow apart, or to hold on tight and fall together. --(c) Official Site

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"Janet Grillo's modestly produced feature breaks no new ground in depicting those who live with autism -- both the afflicted and their loved ones."
‑ Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
"A showcase for Beth Broderick as the mom, Greg Germann as a charming neighbor who flirts with her and a fully immersed Ashley Rickards as the tantrum-prone teen, who appears to be on the intellectual plane of a 2-year-old."
‑ Kyle Smith, New York Post
"The performances by all involved are stellar from start to finish, and the film tackles a tough subject with all the reverence and care one would hope to see..."
‑ Mark Bell, Film Threat
"Suffers from a generic sterility we've come to associate with made-for-TV movies."
‑ Diego Costa, Slant Magazine
"A well-meant drama that never transcends its earnest aims, Janet Grillo's feature debut is notable mostly for an heroic turn from lead Beth Broderick."
‑ Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News
"The lovely, heartbreaking "Fly Away" benefits from superb performances and a gripping story managed with simplicity and grace by writer-producer-director Janet Grillo."
‑ Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times
"Fly Away's overall success is hampered by its narrow focus and relatively uneventful storyline..."
‑ David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
"An authentic tale of survival offering insight, hope and wings!"
‑ Kam Williams, NewsBlaze
"A defiantly unsentimental look at the complex codependency between a harried single mother and her severely autistic daughter."
‑ Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times
"The lead performances are solid, as are the supporting actors, and Grillo is more than competent as a director. But Fly Away could have been stronger if its antiseptic visual style... had been more adventurous."
‑ Ernest Hardy, L.A. Weekly
"A stimulating sense of realism that helps to shape a raw, compassionate portrait of life lived with the disorder, finding pauses of behavior and response that shock and enlighten."
‑ Brian Orndorf,
