John Dietrich (Sam Trammell) is a freshman at a prestigious East Coast university who believes joining a fraternity will be a good way to make friends and establish valuable relationships later in life. John and his close friends Steven Trayer (Eddie Robinson) and Allen Phillips (Jerry Laurino) decide to rush the KPL house, where John is deeply impressed with fraternity president Jake Tyler (Mark Dobies). However, while John, Steven, and Allen promise to stick by one another through the initiation process, Steven is not accepted as a new pledge because he is African-American. John and Allen decide to remain with KPL, and Steven feels betrayed that they choose membership in the frat over loyalty to a friend. As the new pledges are put through hazing, Jake targets John and Allen with a series of racially oriented pranks that are both demeaning and dangerous. Steve is disturbed by his friends' willingness to bend to Jake's will, and Cynthia Gordon (Jessica Prunell), John's girlfriend, warns him that Jake is not to be trusted as his racist actions become more and more extreme.
