Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process. -- (C) Paramount

Bruce Diones, New Yorker
An unnecessary, though enjoyable, remake of Kevin Bacon's 1984 breakout hit.
-
Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor
It seems more pandering (and dated) than ever.

Richard Roeper, Richard Roeper.com
"Footloose" has the look and feel of an OK basic cable movie."
-
Tom Long, Detroit News
In terms of empty-headed exuberance, it's hard to top Footloose.
-
William Goss, Film.com
May not make as great a dent in the current generation as the original film had, but it does offer up a commendable amount of energy and heart...
-
Rob Nelson, Variety
Paramount's Footloose reboot never quite cuts loose enough to distinguish itself from the original.
-
Michael Dequina, TheMovieReport.com
I can easily imagine this FOOTLOOSE being looked back on down the road as the film that launched these names much like how the '84 film is reflected on in terms of Bacon.
-
Richard Knight, Knight at the Movies
You either go all the way with it or simply roll your eyes when confronted by its terrible, cynical crassness.
-
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, Ebert Presents At The Movies
I'm sure there was some great choreography and some great dancing that went into this movie. You don't see any of it.
-
Linda Cook, KWQC-TV (Iowa)
It's taken me a long time to come to grips with this cinematic weakness - or maybe it's a blessing. I like dance movies, especially if the music is bouncy and it makes the characters happy. That's an infectious film sequence for me.
-
Bruce Bennett, Spectrum (St. George, Utah)
It's as if the filmmakers decided, 'We're sticking with the basic script, but this ain't your mama's 'Footloose.'
-
Leonard Maltin, indieWIRE
Does the world really need a remake of Footloose? I would answer no, but I must also admit that the new movie is innocuous and pleasant-enough to watch.
-
Roger Tennis, Cinemaclips.com
The latest Footloose is a step up from recent dance flicks.
-
Neil Pond, American Profile
The characters, the scenes, the dancing, even much of the dialogue are all plugged into a rigidly prefabricated storyline that treats its 1984 predecessor more as holy writ instead of perishable Reagan-era cheese.
-
Alistair Harkness, Scotsman
It seems torn by a desire to appeal to every contemporary teenager's rebellious side, but remains too scared to cut loose from the things that made the original appeal to their parents.
-
Dan Lybarger, MovieMaker Magazine
The makers of 'Footloose 2.0' can be faulted for actually sticking too closely to the original.
-
Lori Hoffman, Atlantic City Weekly
While the 2011 version of the film doesn't suck, it isn't as good as the original ...
-
Jackie K. Cooper, jackiekcooper.com
Better than I thought it would be, but not as good as I hoped it would be.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
...the film's overlength ultimately prevent[s] it from becoming the propulsive piece of work Brewer has clearly intended.
-
Jim Schembri, The Age (Australia)
The dancing sequences are terrific - even the line-dancing is tolerable - but what really sells this quality reboot are the dashes of reality missing from the original.

There comes a time to cut loose Good remake! Not as good as the original but pretty much the same storyline. While the nostalgia factor may cloud the memories of some people, the original Footloose is really nothing more than a fun diversion packed alongside an absolutely infectious soundtrack that is still great even today. It is a fairly silly film really, but with the help of Kevin Bacon's 1984-era charm and charisma, the film remains a wildly enjoyable film. Yet somehow, in remaking the film for an audience in 2011, it seems like the filmmakers missed more than a few steps along the way. 'Footloose' is about celebrating the spirit of youth through the freedom of movement, so expect the characters to speak passionately about how dancing isn't just a frivolous activity, or worse still an act of rebellion against authority. But while these other films were simply content to wow their audiences with some spectacular dance moves, Brewer surprisingly places story and character front and center, using dance only as a device to either. The 80s version had more energy and focus. People bashed this movie before they saw it and even after wards their minds are wrapped up in their biased critique. Remakes are not made to outdo the original, but to modernize it for the next generation. It was truly amazing, nodded at the original and kept it tight. Go see it for fun! Ren MacCormack moves from the city of Boston to a small southern town, where life is very different. An accident, in which five teenagers were killed after a night out, shocked the small town's community. The local councilmen and Reverend Shaw reacted to the incident by banning loud music and dancing. Ren stands up to the ban and, in the process, falls in love with the Reverend's daughter. -

Well, I think they made this movie with the intent to please fans of the older one. I thought the remade scenes payed a lot of homage to the original, but still made it new. A well done, very enjoyable updated version of a classic. ............and the last major dance scene had me clapping like the complete dork that I am!! :) yay! -

As far as remakes go "Footloose" is one of the better ones. It takes the same story, adds a few updates, and maintains what made the original a classic. The music is good, the dancing is cheesy, and the acting is campy(there I said it Bob). For those that don't know the story, it's a story about a town that has been affected by tragedy. Five teenagers were killed in a car accident after a party. The parents then decide to outlaw dancing, partying, basically take all the fun of being a teenager away. Then Ren(Kenny Wormald) moves to town from Boston and tries to change things through the power of dance(lol). There's one scene that is just so damn cheesy it makes the movie. Ren is mad at life and the authorities so he just dances his frustrations out at an old abandoned barn, it's pretty funny. Girls will probably love this movies, and guys will either roll their eyes or go along for the ride. Could it have been better? Sure, I mean the original is better, but it is what it is. Worth a watch. -

I went in thinking this was going to be bad and was pleasantly surprised. It's a great remake that keeps all the charm of the original while updating what needed to be. Dennis Quaid was great and the main guy Wormald did a good job as well. -

Cast: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Ziah Colon, Ray McKinnon, Miles Teller, Ser'Darius William Blain, Patrick Flueger, Andie MacDowell, Maggie Jones Director: Craig Brewer Summary: This musical remake of the infectious 1984 hit finds dance-lovin', big-city kid Ren MacCormack stuck in a small town where dancing is illegal. As he rebels against the town and its influential Rev. Moore, Ren falls for the pastor's lovely daughter. My Thoughts: "I decided before watching this film that I would just sit and watch it without trying to compare every scene or try looking for any resemblence to the original. I wanted to base it on being it's own film. In doing that, I actually was surprised at how much I liked it. The acting is solid, it's funny, sad, and in the end a great tribute to the original. Kenny Wormald danced his butt off in this film. Julianne Hough is no stranger to doing the same, but we've all seen her do her thang. But Wormald is fresh meat and I liked him. Miles Teller a.k.a Willard, stole each scene. He was charming, funny, and smooth on his feet once he got the rhythm. The little girls in the film are precious and do a fab job at doing their own little song and dance. Very cute. I was so for not seeing this film because remakes are never better then the original or even close to being decent. I won't say it's better then the first, but I will say it's a great film on it's own." -

Footloose is a film adaption of the 1984 movie that made Kevin Bacon a star, this movie will most likely not turn anyone into a huge star, but will be a great trip down memory lane for those who have seen the original, and as for me I have not seen the original so I cannot compare them, but as a stand alone film i think this was not that bad. The story follows Ren Mckormack (Kenny Wormland) who moves to the small town of Bomont after his mother dies of cancer, and learns there is a ban against public dancing. He meets Ariel (Julianne Hough), a rebellious teen with a jerky boyfriend and who is the daughter of the town priest (Dennis Quaid), and when the two meet they start to grow to like each other and then have feelings for each other. Ren plans to do anything to end this law and bring dance to the city. The plot is honestly nothing to glorify, its a simple tale about two people who fall in, love and the boy trying to bring dance to his new town, and it kept me interested I admit but its hard to really love a story that has been done before, but for what it was I liked it, and the characters seem to be pretty good but when I look back I think the only characters I will remember will be the the protagonists because almost the entire movie is Kenny Wormland and Julianne Hough, and to be honest there characters were pretty likeable because they have problems just like us, and I think that makes us able to like them and relate to them more, all the other characters were just okay, they were not given much to work with though. The cast will not win any awards for their acting, but they sure deserve credit for their dance skills because these people are a very talented bunch of dancers. Kenny Wormland is not a bad actor at all, he was actually pretty good, but I think in this movie we need to pay more attention to how they dance and he danced very well. Julianne Hough is not a great actress, she was nothing to actually love either, but I did not hate her, she did not really bug me but i felt like she was just there to be hot and be a decent dancer. The dancing in the film is really good, they use modern dancing instead of copying the original film (which I have seen the dance scene) and they realize it is a dance film and they use many different dance styles and I thought they were pretty good, honestly I am not a very good dancer, but I think that they were, and that's just my opinion. Footloose is a fun way to spend the afternoon with your girlfriend and just sit down and watch a good dance flick that is being done again, and if you have seen the original and you disagree with me and believe its a bad movie because of the characters or the plot, you probably are right because I have not seen the original, but if someone asks me if it was good I will say "yes" because I believe as a stand alone film it was not bad. -

A spectacular triumph, Director, Craig Brewe crafts another electrifying classic. A bold, sexy, thrilling and wonderfully entertaining movie thats filled with amazing dance sequences and alot of heart and soul. It`s smart, funny, and always a joy to watch. It burst with pure energy right off the screen. Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough have sparking and raw chemistry, they are absolutely stunning, Wormald brings a James Dean type of look to his character and gives a strong and compelling performance that shows he will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Dennis Quaid is a revelation, he gives one of his finest performances. A wild and fun ride of a movie. A real great surprise. -

This is as middle of the road as my feelings get. Its fun enough, its cool enough, its got enough of a story, characters are interesting enough, etc. Its as close to the original as you can get without being annoying. Its as much of a musical as you can allow without annoying the country. Its just fine. The weaknesses are in the choreographed music in a setting that it doesn't work. In a musical you buy it, in this you don't. And Kenny Wormwald, who I have no clue about, isn't nearly as charismatic or as energetic as Kevin Bacon. But that's no surprise. All in all, I don't think i can recommend it. But if you go to see it or end up seeing it with your friends, you probably won't regret it as much as maybe wish you put your money to another movie. -

Who could ever replace Kevin Bacon or the film itself? However, I was very much mistaken. This remake has been done brilliantly with a fabulous cast and not as similar to the original as I thought it would be. Has a great modern twist and I've come to realise that when the original had come out in the 80's, all 17 year olds were out there enjoying it. As I am 17 years old and this has just been released, this is now my footloose. Very well done. -

Footloose: Dance or Die! Written by Markus Robinson, Edited by Nicole I. Ashland As "the great" Kevin Bacon once uttered: "There is a time for everything: A time to weep, a time to morn and a time to dance"...and (in this reviewers opinion) a time to walk out of a movie. And this 2011 MTV Films version of "Footloose" is said movie! What MTV patsy, director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan), is presenting here really gives his audience nothing new or innovative with his retelling of this 80's "classic". So, if you thought the original was cornball 80's fluff, then you probably have no intention of seeing this version (nor should you). It's not like "Footloose" is overwhelmingly offensive or anything like that (in fact, it is harmless in a made for T.V. kind of way), it's just that "Footloose" isn't any good. Synopsis: It starts off with a group of rambunctious teenagers who die in a drunk driving accident, so logically the head of the town, Rev. Moore, decides to ban dancing, quoting the long beloved scripture "Thou shall not boogie". Wait, don't slit your wrists just yet, there's more. Three years later a teen "bad boy" from the big city whose hair no woman can tame, Ren MacCormack, played by Kenny Wormald (aka Tony Romo's bother-in-law), comes to this hillbilly town (where he obviously will never fit in, which makes him so much cooler) and doesn't quite understand why nobody will let him dance (boo-hoo). This rebel with absolutely no cause meets Ariel (played by Julianne Hough) the reverend's daughter (so obviously she is a misunderstood skank), and they decide to join forces to rebel against Rev. Moore for their own personal reasons. Ok, you can kill yourself now. You know in the average teen angst movies of today, where teens revolt by underage drinking or premarital sex, well in "Footloose" you get an entire class of children that say no to drugs but are in desperate need of choreography; and they don't care how they get it! Ok, so you know that going into this movie that it was set up to be an asinine premise to begin with, but the fact that this new version stays pretty faithful to the original is actually the largest reason why this film doesn't work in the context of 2011. You have the same abandoned warehouse dance scene that is gravely lackluster compared to Kevin Bacon's signature dance, that same final hackie speech about "a time to dance"; and my God, there is even the dreadfully similar "Let's Hear It for the Boy" semi shot for shot montage, which seems insanely out of place in any venue outside of 1984. As for the actors, Dennis Quaid (The Rookie) is actually the most disappointing part of this movie playing a tranquilized version of the iconic John Lithgow character from the original version. He absolutely does no justice to how outlandish this role was meant to be performed. And the leading roles played by Wormald, who thinks he is James Dean and Hough who thinks she is 5 years younger than she is, are truthfully not performed poorly. There are even minor laughs here, mostly from Miles Teller who plays Willard, but the material is so bubble gum that halfway through this "movie" audiences will inevitably begin to feel bad for everyone involved, as it soon becomes blaringly apparent that everyone on screen was really trying hard to make something out of nothing. And "Footloose" really is nothing. Final Thought: I understand that I may be coming off as a buzz kill. Why can't I just go to a vapid/empty calorie movie and just have some fun right?! This movie may be mindless but doesn't it relate to the youth of today? I myself know that when I am worried about paying my bills, or about my job security in this day and age, or war or famine around the world, sometimes I simply want to forget all of that and just....DANCE (I say sarcastically). Ok, back to reality; all "Footloose" has proven is this type of dance movie is dead. And furthermore, the only viable dance movies will stem from your "Step Up" franchise of today (and we all need more of those. I can see the marquee now: Coming Soon "Step Up 4: The Rise of the Dougie"). Well anyways, all "Footloose" is, is a film that is the same ol' some ol' outdated Junk, with 2011 ticket prices. It may be a remake, but the originality somehow remains. This time, they use new-age hip-hop and country music to keep the crowd pleased, and honestly, as long as they pay homages (which is exactly what it does) it will satisfy any fan of the original film. This film will have you tapping your feet and cheering with the students to have the law of "no dancing" abolished. The original film is where it all started, which is why a replication is not a great idea. This is definitely not a replication, but a mere nod and smile type of movie that will have you clapping as they reinvent the classic scenes. The country line dancing was, and still remains to be my favourite scene, seeing as they just seem to get it perfect every time. You really believe that no dancing is allowed due to the extremely powerful opening sequence. The new cast is great, but Kenny Wormald (even though very talented and more skilled with the dance moves) is no Kevin Bacon. To me this film is an upgrade on the original, but since it did not start the series, all I can do is place it on the same level. The cinematography is decent, the acting is pretty good, the PG-13 rating is taken to it's limits, and the dancing is spectacular! This remake of "Footloose" is great! -

Ren: Wait, jump back. It's against the law for people to dance? So earlier in the week, before seeing the new update of Footloose, I watched the original 1984 Footloose, starring Kevin Bacon, for the very first time. Upon doing this, I found out something that I was not aware of - Footloose is a legitimately good movie and I was never aware of this fact. It rests on the silly logic of having a town under oppression when it comes to the subject of dancing, but the movie is quite enjoyable. With this remake, I can't say I was excited for it, especially given my newfound appreciation for the original, but I was curious, as I learned it was under the direction of Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan), who has a good handle on films with a country setting. Fortunately, while it goes the carbon copy route, I found this modernized update of Footloose to be quite enjoyable as well. read the whole review at thecodeiszeek.com -

The way they promoted this, I expected it to be a little bit more of a departure from the original than it actually was. The main difference I felt between watching this one and watching the original is it just seems like most of the performances are imitations of their original counterparts...I almost would have liked to see them mix it up a little more. I felt like I was so distracted by how much they were trying to copy the dialogue of the original that I never really got invested into the characters. Even with a slower pace and richer backstory, it never fully clicked for me with Kenny Wormald & Julianne Hough as Ren & Ariel, respectively, nor with Dennis Quaid, Hough, and Andie MacDowell as the Moore family unit. Don't get me wrong, there were still great moments throughout the film and some of the dance choreography is flat out incredible (I wanted MORE!!)...it's just not quite the same as the original when it comes to the heart of the movie. I also won't get too spoilery, but the signature warehouse scene was nowhere near as effective as it was in the original. I think they could have had a better song choice, and the way they edited it together made it seem a little goofier than it should have been. While it may seem like I'm overly picky about details and character development, it's just because I hold the original with such high regard. In all honesty, I enjoyed this movie...I just enjoyed the original a lot more. -
