1932's Forbidden, is one of my favorite black and white films. It stars the elegant Barbara Stanwyck and was billed by some as her most dramatic role.
The story is about a young woman , named Lulu. Lulu falls for an unobtainable man, Bob Grover. Mr. Grover is a famous politicia...( read more)n, she meets while on vacation. The two have a torrid love affair. She then finds out two surprises, she's pregnant and he's married. After the baby is born, she decides to give her to Bob, who adopts her without question. To be close to the baby and the man she yearns for, Lulu poses as the couple's nanny. Things get twisted, when Lulu gets a job working with the newspaper. There, she meets Al Holland. Al owns the paper, and is relentless to dig up the dirt on the famous politician. More relentless however, and to marry the beautiful Lulu.
Admittedly, some of the effects and acting in this film are right out of that can of ooey gooey Easy Cheese. There even seems to be a few plot holes, here and there. But, considering the era, this is a great film.
Forbidden is a timeless tale of verboten love and the combustible passion that one's heart hang on to, through out the years. It is well worth the watch, and the box of Kleenex.

The best of Capra's pre-code films. This very simple, elegant movie tells the life story of good people doing so-called "bad things" where you sympathize with everyone involved. Lulu meets a nice man in Havana and they fall in love. Unfortunately he's married to a woman he feels ...( read more)obligated to (who's not a shrew, just not right for him that's handicapped because of an auto accident that he was behind the wheel of) and Lulu doesn't want to ruin his life. So they carry on a secret affair for 20 years, even have a child together that he passes off as his adopted daughter. There's something very deep, true, and real in this movie and Stanwyck nearly breaks your heart over and over in this movie. The look on her face when she sees her child call his wife "mommy" had me in heart wrenching despair. Stanwyck always threw herself fully into every part she played and she always came off as genuine. That was always her strength.

The only weakness comes in the third act when a very weird and random murder of a character that is suddenly vilified occurs, but other than that a fine film that really opens your mind up about adultery and why people may do it.
