Freak Weather
Jacqueline McKenzie stars in this bleak, ambitious character portrait. Kicked out of her home by her loutish, abusive boyfriend, Penny (McKenzie) tries desperately to ingratiate herself back into his favor. In her pathetic efforts to debase herself, she makes all the wrong choices, including a half-hearted attempt to sacrifice her dog and kill her son.

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"Fiction writer and debuting helmer Mary Kuryla is clearly after a Big Statement on abuse and strength of character, but falls short by creating a self-destructive monster in lieu of a sympathetic protagonist."
‑ Eddie Cockrell, Variety
"Kinetic and sympathetic gutter picaresque."
‑ Laura Sinagra, Village Voice
"Like Martin Scorsese's After Hours, Freak Weather is the story of an accidental journey, a thwarted attempt to return home that turns into a voyage of self-knowledge."
‑ Dana Stevens, New York Times
"[A] sad, surprisingly absorbing story."
‑ Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide's Movie Guide
"Mostly, Freak Weather is just pathetic."
‑ Russell Scott Smith, New York Post
"A promising feature-film debut."
‑ David Sterritt, Christian Science Monitor
