What if you had the chance to travel back in time and change just one event in your life? What would it be? For John Sullivan, there is no question. He would undo the events of October 12, 1969, when ...( read more  read more... )the out-of-control Bruxton fire took the life of his father, a heroic firefighter. Ever since he was a kid, John dreamed of being able to stop the tragedy of that fateful day, which set into motion the anger and loneliness that have haunted his adult life as a cop in the 1990s. Now John may get exactly what he has wished for, and more than he bargained for. One day before the anniversary of his father's death, in the midst of the spectacular storm known as the aurora borealis, John Sullivan discovers in the house he inherited his father's old ham radio and begins to play with it. Through the electrical static, he finds himself talking to a man who claims to be a firefighter and who appears to be awaiting the World Series of 1969. Is John really talking to his own living father on the very same day, in the very same house, but exactly three decades ago? At first neither can believe it, but soon John is carrying on an all-night conversation with his young father, sharing for the first time his deep love and regret over his future death. Yet John realizes that now he may be able to change all that. By alerting Frank to the mistake that cost him his life the first time around, John saves his youthful father from dying in the Bruxton fire. On October 12, 1999, John Sullivan discovers that he now has photographs on his walls of his father as a gray-haired man. By changing the past, the Sullivans have forged a new present. John is ecstatic with his new memories of his father- until he discovers other things have been altered. Subtle changes caused by his father's survival have led to a string of unsolved serial homicides, including the grisly murder of John's mother. Now Frank and John must race against the clock-divided by three decades and connected only by a radio-to prevent a murder that will seal their destinies. And each time Frank changes something in his universe, John wakes up to a whole new reality.

Since the 21st century began, there have been several movies with several interconnected stories ("Traffic", "Syriana", "Babel"). In that sense, maybe Gregory Hoblit's "Frequency" was a sign of things to come. Granted, it focuses on one story, but uses two other topics (aurora Borealis and baseball) to move the plot along.

Of course, it's probably not too important that aurora Borealis and baseball play the roles that they play. The movie brings up the paradox of time travel, all the while understanding that this is a fictional story. It's not a great movie, but you gotta admire how they lay everything out, with the changes in the past and present. Worth seeing. Starring Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel.

Excellent thriller about a father and son who can communicate through a wireless in different decades. They realise they can change history so they try to stop a murder. Great plot and cast.

Interesting idea that could have explored a father and sons relationship which instead decides to turn into a serial killer murder mystery. Obviously played for the highest grosses and wider audience. It holds itself together by being moderately entertaining with Quaid on usual e...( read more)xcellent form. Could have made a much better and more mature drama.

Although it's science fiction, it's also part drama and part thriller. And they both go pretty well.

I saw this film in theatres almost on a whim, with no real expectations going in. I was blown away. I sat for the last 20 minutes squirming in my chair because I had to go to the bathroom really badly, but I couldn't pull myself away from the proceedings. My friend and I were hav...( read more)ing discussions based on this movie for at least two weeks after seeing it. The plot is simple. John Sullivan is a cop going through a failing marriage. He stumbles on an old ham radio, and thanks to some unexplained phenomenon brought on by the aurora borealis, he begins talking with Frank, a firefighter from Queens who just happens to be John's long-dead father 30 years in the past. Impossible? Sure. But the plot is easily pulled off by the earnest, heartfelt performances of Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid who are both excellent in their respective roles. Their relationship is so real and aimiable that it grounds the fantastic premise and allows us to move forward, or backward as the case may be. What the Sullivans discover is that it's tough messing with the past. They change something and it affects something else, until they are in over their heads trying to stop a serial murderer in the past from John's vantage point in the future. The result is a tense, emotional, and mesmerizing thriller that sucks you in and doesn't let go until the final scene. If you're a fan of high-concept films in general or time-travel movies in particularly, you'll have a lot to think about there. I did. The plot is pretty tight given the time-bending theme which is always difficult to pull off. The creators take a few cinematic liberties but the story still makes a lot of sense if you follow it correctly and stands up to a lot of scrutiny. This is one of my favorite movies, and I think it is vastly overlooked and underrated. Check it out, suspend your disbelief a little, and enjoy the ride.
