July 7, 2008Ten years later, Michael Haneke revisits an old film, and does it again.
It is exactly the same.
But the thing is, what would you change? When I say "does it again", I don't just mean remade it, I mean he made a great remake. What's more, considering the content of the film, doing it again, exactly the same way, is rather appropriate, considering the metafictional tone.
I generally really really hate remakes, but something about this one gives a feeling of honesty and verve, whereas 99% of remakes today are just lazily produced fluff. -
March 27, 2008the film addresses the filmmaker/audience relationship, that was the main thesis of the film. The film is meant to "play a game" with the audience, and break the rules of traditional hollywood cinematic grammar. Thereby interupting you're expecation of what is SUPPOSED to happen. This point is blatantly spelled out at the end of the film during the conversation on the boat, that is if you did'nt get it already. Filmicly, it was brilliant. The plot line was fragmented, and intentionally done that way. I have never seen a widely distributed, feature length film that critiques film making so aggressively. Though it has been done countless times in the art film world (by art film i don't mean indie movies btw). One of the best big budget features I've seen in a long time.

March 18, 2008Is a frame for frame of Michael Haneke original film from '98 but in English language.It starts getting funny with the psychos playing these silly & mind games but after awhile this perverse tale of sadism gets boring.The film could've been interesting if there was more to the story instead of seeing the reaction of people being tortured & potential to see few effective scenes if it wasn't off screen.As the film progresses it feels like is taking too long to get to the point besides can't help thinking of "A clockwork Orange" which is more violent & perverse than this one.

July 3, 2007I've seen the original. I was surprised to hear that Michael Haneke wanted to make the English version. I wonder if he will replicate the original in this new version because the original is very very bleak. Wonder if Hollywood and America can stomach it. I remember Dutch director George Sluizer when remaking his bleak thriller "The Vanishing" as the English-speaking Hollywood version "The Vanishing", he replaced the bleak storyline with a more happy-ended one. I wonder if Haneke will do the same with this.
