In this Japanese variation on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," a goldfish with a human face escapes from the undersea lair built by her wizard father and decides she wants to become human when washes ashore and is adopted as a pet by a little boy. Some amazing han...( read more)d-drawn sequences, such as when newly-human Ponyo trips across waves that turn into fish and then melt back into surf; it's squarely aimed at little girls, who will be completely entranced, but it has much less crossover appeal to adults, who will spend their time just looking at the pretty pastel-colored pictures.

Another breathtaking marvel from the master Miyazaki. Wow, I hardly know what to say.
While every other studio is scrambling to see who can outdo the other in terms of technological prowess here we have a pure concentration on the telling of the tale and the river takes us exac...( read more)tly where we are supposed to be.
Mystical mythos fused with a child's wonder we are once again transformed in the eye of the maker who lets us know that we must accept people for who they are, love unconditionally and allow ourselves to be loved. Also, much like "Nausicaa," Miyazaki also comments on how poorly we care for the earth.
In a rare foray into the "G" rated category, Miyazaki never fails to delight or teach. I will gladly add this fine piece of cinema and storytelling mastery to my collection upon its release to DVD.
See it as soon as you can.

It was cute, but not as complex as Miyazaki's previous films. It is more geared for children.

Miyazaki's latest masterpiece could well be his most charming work to date. It centers on a 5 year old boy named Sosuke who discovers a talking goldfish princess whom he names Ponyo who longs to become a human. It's a modern day fairytale which also carries an important environme...( read more)ntal message with it. It leaves you with a big smile on your face after it's ended. Pure Miyazaki magic. I just love the wonderful theme tune sung by 9 year old Nozomi Ohashi. I heartily recommend Ponyo.

Ponyo is an incredibly cute and heartwarming movie. I watched this in Japanese with English subs, the voices of all the actors fit the characters perfectly. The ending theme song is so cute too.
