I am not a fan of Tim Allen's work and my liking of Galaxy Quest is more for the rest of the casts performances, i.e. Alan Rickman is spot on and steals the show and Sigourney Weaver is equally as impressive. The story is clever and fun it works really well and just captures the mood of the whole genre.
Gwen DeMarco: Fred, you had a part people loved. I mean, my TV Guide interview was six paragraphs about my BOOBS and how they fit into my suit. No one bothered to ask me what I do on the show. Fred Kwan: You were... umm, wait... Gwen DeMarco: I repeated the computer, Fred.
Fuck Star Trek.
Tim Allen stars as a former actor on a popular sci-fi series back in the day known as Galaxy Quest. He along with the other former actors played by Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub frequently attend conventions, as they still have a fan base, i.e. nerds.
One day, Allen and eventually the others, are kidnapped by actual aliens, who have come across TV signals and have interpreted them as actual documentaries of reality, so believing Allen and his crew to be actual astronauts/space adventurers, they have come to earth in an attempt to have them pilot a recreation of the Galaxy Quest space ship in order to fight off an evil alien trying to wipe out their race.
This concept works wonderfully to satirize sci-fi (mainly Star Trek) culture, and provide some very good entertainment.
Tim Allen takes a step back from terrible Christmas films to make a very funny new role for himself as an ego obsessed former star now tasked with being a real captain.
The rest of the cast is also very good. I particularly liked Shalhoub as the guy who kind of excepts the situation and embraces everything and Sam the man Rockwell as a former extra on the series who frequently thinks he's gonna die.
Guy Fleegman: I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm just "Crewman Number Six." I'm expendable. I'm the guy in the episode who dies to prove how serious the situation is. I've gotta get outta here.
The movie boasts some good special effects as well and works very well at using some of the sci-fi logic to make some very funny scenes work.
A lot of fun.
Guy Fleegman: I don't like this. I don't like this at all. Gwen DeMarco: They are *so* cute. Guy Fleegman: Sure, they're cute now, but in a second they're gonna get mean, and they're gonna get ugly somehow, and there's gonna be a million more of them.
The minor characters make the movie worth watching. Rockwell's sci-fi references and plight to not get killed are just as funny as Rickman's snide comments. They could have replaced Tim Allen with anyone and I would still have found this film funny.
Alan Rickman, Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver head up an amazing cast in this spoof on the legendary Star Trek series, and spin-offs, and since it's 1999 and there is still Star Trek: Voyager on, it is actually quite funny and just catches the show's thunder before it started to wane. This new enterprise takes off with a mock Star Trek convention where nutty folks hound the actors, and some of them take them to a mock-up for their ship, and on a fantastic and nutty adventure.
Love this movie, spose it's because I am a Trekkie So many in-jokes and the cast is terrific. See the fans do know more about thses shows than the actors.
A fun, quirky film with enough high-profile actors to keep it entertaining, including Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, Rainn Wilson, and Tony Shalhoub. The abundance of recognizable actors keeps it entertaining, though the plot and action are laughable at best. It comes across as a sci-fi parody, and this was most likely the intention of the film, in which case it would succeed. It's not worth a purchase; it's a one-time viewing. If you like any of those actors, it's worth the viewing.
This was actually really good for a Comedy Sci-Fi movie; because a lot of the ones that I have seen always seemed kind of dumb. This movie has a lot of actors I know of! Like of course Tim Allen, when I was little he was the only Actor in this movie I knew of! But It's so funny, when I was little this movie always freaked me out! Actually I always thought Alan Rickman's character looked really weird, because of that thing he wore on his head! Lol! Now that I think about it, I think this was the very first movie I saw with Alan Rickman, and before just recently the last time I saw this movie was when I was like 5! So when I first saw Harry Potter, I knew he looked familiar, and it drove me crazy because I couldn't think of what I've seen him in, so I decided to do some research to find out what he's played in, and there it was "Galaxy Quest", I was like, "Oh my Gosh! He plays the guy with the weird thing on his head!"; of course now it doesn't bother me as much, but I still wish he would take it off a least once in the movie! Lol!
I think what effected this movie the most was the story line and the way it was filmed. Because the characters and the humor were very enjoyable. I think Tim Allen actually did well for this film, because he usually gets a bad wrap for his movies. But Alan Rickman....I don't really think this is his type of movie.
This film features characters that I swear I've met at SF conventions in the past. The most fun you can have watching other people make fun of things you love.
Ok as odd as this movie was, I enjoyed th humor and I love Alan Rickman as an actor. He's really entertaining and throwing in Tim Allen just makes it even better.
All the actors are great in this movie.
The plot is one of the most creative plots ive seen in a long time, and it's seriously a great fun movie to watch.
I would like to go on record to say, I dislike Sci-Fi, but I loved this. If that tells you anything, it's you should watch it!
I love Justin Long in this movie.
Long before he was the Dell guy he was nerdy Brandon, the Galaxy Quest fan who knew everything about the show and thought that everything was real.
i remember being terrified of it in the cinema! but my friends made me watch it again later and it was actually really good - alan rickman is really good!
Funny as fuck. I'm sure I would enjoy it even more if I had more than a passing knowledge of Star Trek, but the vast majority of the gags don't even require it. "Is there air?! WE DON'T KNOW!!"
My all time favorite sci-fi comedy. This movie is brilliantly funny. A great movie to watch for the whole family. Loved all the characters and the actors who played them. Strongly recommended to everyone...
