Gallipoli

Mel Gibson, Mark Lee, Bill Kerr, Robert Grubb, Bill Hunter

An outstanding drama, Gallipoli resonates with sadness long after you have seen it. Set during World War I, this brutally honest antiwar movie was cowritten by director Peter Weir. Mark Lee and a sinf...( read more  read more... )ully handsome Mel Gibson are young, idealistic best friends who put aside their hopes and dreams when they join the war effort. This character study follows them as they enlist and are sent to Gallipoli to fight the Turks. The first half of the film is devoted to their lives and their strong friendship. The second half details the doomed war efforts of the Aussies, who are no match for the powerful and aggressive Turkish army. Because the script pulls us into their lives and forces us to care for these young men, we are devastated by their fate. --Rochelle O'Gorman

"From a place you've never heard of, comes a story you'll never forget."

Two Australian sprinters face the brutal realities of war when they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during World War I.

Peter Weir has long been one of my favorite directors, and he has had a career consumed by subtle, quiet, lingering films. He can make the most banal concept seem thrilling and suspenseful; a perfect example is the Harrison Ford film "Witness." It could have easily become a stupid, insulting, exploitative "thriller." The ending is, in retrospect, quite ridiculous. But Weir has a strange ability to make anything seem realistic. "Gallipoli" is one of his older films, from 1981, and it stars a huge cast of names - most famous today, of course, Mel Gibson...whose name is now splattered across the front of the DVD case. The story is a true one and follows a group of young Australian men who join the ANZACs in World War I. They are sent to Gallipoli, and amidst personal and emotional turmoil they must learn to band together and fight the Turkish Army. "Gallipoli" is a great film - slow, subtle, low-key. It's a bit like an Australian version of "All Quiet on the Western Front." I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys slower films and can appreciate character-driven dramas.

A tragic homoerotic Australian "Paths of Glory" with a wonderfully haunting final shot.

what i wanna know is... what would great strategists like hannibal or alexander think of this battle plan? gallipoli was comical and at the same time completely sad. it wasn't a sacrifice. it was plain arrogance and murder by commanding officers. i didn't realise mel gibson could...( read more) do a good aussie accent. i wouldn't of called this a war film though as there is a very small amount of battle scenes in it. it's more of a war drama and at doing that it's pretty engaging

An Australian classic and a deep insight into some of the anti war sympathies in the time.

As a war film, this isn't all explosions and gun battles. War is portrayed as a game up until the last 20 minutes or so. It's a good drama, but don't expect lots of action.
