''Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.''
    -Mahatma Gandhi-

Biography of Mahatma Gandhi, the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British through his philosophy of non-violent protest.

...( read more)Ben Kingsley: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

    Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi,
is simply one of the greatest men of the 20th Century. Still awe-inspiring and loved by thousands upon thousands of adoring people, both Indian and Non-Indian. His message of Non-violence, of Peaceful Protesting continues to live on after his tragic demise and inspire famous leaders. Gandhi's life work was not an easy journey, the greatest biographic movie, in all it's extravagant poise, vision and detail, ever made Gandhi tells it so magnificently.

Right from the off, we the audience see Gandhi battling the controlling British Government in South Africa, taking the Indian immigrants to their freedom despite being thrown in prison and horribly beaten. After his great victory over the South African Government, Gandhi returns home to free his nation from the oppressive British. He continues his message of peace and non-violence, persuading thousands of Indians to ignore the British.

Like in Africa, he is thrown in captivity and his fellow Indians are shot in a truly graphic scene where a an Army General shows no emotion and no remorse in his cold cruel act of examples made by murder. Even after India is freed from Britain, Gandhi continues his fight, hoping to achieve peace between Muslims and Hindus which sadly resulted in his assassination that claimed his life. Yet his message continues to inspire and burn brightly.

Ben Kingsley is truly amazing as Gandhi Mahatma. You must see it with your own eyes to believe. He is Gandhi. People actually mistook Kingsley for Gandhi himself. It's an accomplishment of a lifetime for Kingsley to depict him so well.
The rest of the cast are also exceptional. Martin Sheen and Candice Bergen are terrific as reporters helping to share with the world of Gandhi's vision, exploits and burning resolve. His priest friend also good indeed, trying to spread Gandhi's word to the people of South Africa who, in a sad scene, walk out on him during the homily.

The British are well depicted accurately shown as the tyrannical masters of India. Like I said previously, the scenes where the British kill rioters, who are peacefully protesting are hard to watch but to show this is a necessary evil.

His assassination scene is truly powerful in its simplicity as Gandhi is ruthlessly killed in public, in cold blood.

Gandhi is truly one of the most important, Biopic, Epic films ever. It proves that violence is not necessary...just as Gandhi told us throughout his life. Who's life was like a burning candle glowing only for the slimmest of times but in that time burning brighter than any other like a beacon in the darkness, a prophet of truth.

Having read Freedom at Midnight really helped identify characters and events - truth be told, the book was more exciting than this film. Ben Kingsley was brilliant - but it is hard to capture the story of a man like Gandhi on film.

Not completely bad. It has fine performance by Ben Kingsley, but it goes on for far too long and loses steam. Still finely shot and performed.

Richard Attenborough deserves all the credit for the fantastic manner in which he has presented the life of the bare chested Mahatma that led India to freedom from British colonial rule. Ben Kingsley as the Mahatma excelled and the Oscars confirmed that the film was an unbeatable one in the year of 1982. A must see. It inspires, it tells a tale about a different kind of greatness - greatness in peace, in non violence, to a world that is now learning that violence is a big mistake.

I saw Gandhi the first time on a school field trip. Needless to say, the point was pretty much lost on an eleven year old. Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian attorney traveling to South Africa, in first class. He was unaware that ?black? people were not allowed in the front of the t...( read more)rain. He was told to go to the back or he would be thrown off at the next station. At the next stop he was unceremoniously tossed of the train. Gandhi was shocked by the way he was treated, and he was determined to find a way to fight this injustice. He had his first demonstration against the British regime and was beaten by the police. He did not fight back. Gandhi walked all over India preaching his beliefs, gathering followers along the way. He spent his life advocating nonviolence. He was jailed numerous times and even lost his wife to a heart attack while they were both in jail. His message was clear; the best way to fight a wrong is not to fight at all.
Hinduism was integral in Gandhi?s actions against the English. He was raised to believe that all people are equal, and that you should lead a peaceful and harmonious life. So, from his point of view, the only way he could fight back was in a nonviolent way.

    Gandhi Review

The movie begins with Mohandas Gandhi assassination. It is poignant and a shock for most to see the ending at the beginning. All of Gandhi?s followers fall to the ground around him to comfort him and to send prayers to God. After Gandhi?s body is laid to rest, his...( read more) story of hard times and triumph begins.
Gandhi was a small town Indian lawyer who had his people and his family at heart. In everything that he did, from his first protest against the English Police, to all the ones in between, Gandhi was a leader for the people and by the people. Gandhi always believed in non-violent protesting, whether he himself were to be harmed by the doings of others. The Indian people were almost like Gandhi?s army. Although some were afraid to speak at times, once Gandhi opened his mouth his people listened and spoke up too. Gandhi?s objective was to demolish the British power that was at its climax in India. Boycott?s of anything British was demanded by Gandhi of his people. He wanted the British to get the point that they were not needed. The film documents what struggles Gandhi faced while in South Africa and the struggles his people faced while working in a bigoted environment. In the movie, you can see how Gandhi progresses into a political and religious leader. Unfortunately, this all leads up to Gandhi?s assassination, which is shown at the very beginning of the film.
Gandhi relates to the Hindu culture in many aspects. First Gandhi practiced Hinduism openly and was an avid follower. He considered himself to be a Sanatani Hindu. He believed in the Vedas and the other Hindu scriptures. In the movie Gandhi proves to be an equalizer. He believes everyone should have the same rights. He also believes that everyone should practice what they believe in. Like most Hindu?s, Gandhi see?s that all religions have faults but all religions bring happiness and faith to its followers. When in his darkest moments, Gandhi never forgot or left his faith of Hinduism. When in doubt he would turn to the Bhagavad Gita to find a prayer to lift his spirits.
Gandhi was a leader of his people and a follower of God. He had so many monumental, inspirational experiences that changed the world. Although his death came to fast, his memory remains forever and his words are still being talked about today.

First I'll review the overall experience. This is a good movie, but hindered somewhat by the sound mixing problems. Some parts of the dialogue are muted and difficult to hear. From a storytelling point, the movie moves along nicely and is well paced. At 190 minutes long, there...( read more) is a short intermission halfway through.

Now to the heart of the movie: this is a powerful telling of the struggles Gandhi encountered on his journey to help India help herself. Consistently, with every new crisis, he conducted himself in a way that was aligned with the philosophy of non-violence and non cooperation. I was strongly reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's civil disobedience protests in the 1960's and remembered that Dr. King had modeled his protests after Gandhi's. This movie is inspiring and well worth watching.

The movie follows Gandhi from his time as an attorney in South Africa, to his return to India, where he began coordinating resistance to British rule. Once the British had finally gone, he turned his attention to a united India, which was not without its problems. There were concerns that the Hindus would collectively supress the Muslims, even after everything they'd been through together, to oust the British.

One of my favourite scenes was where Gandhi was leaving his ashram to visit with Jinnah and told the protesters at his gate that he was a Muslim, a Hindu, a Jew and a Christian. He then said so were all of the protesters. Gandhi's tolerance of other religious faiths and his belief that we are all one exemplified his life and have endured beyond his death. Truly, he lived a life of compassion and tolerance. Please see this movie.
