A moving attempt to sketch the life of one great man.

Being a Richard Attenborough film you expect it to be rather epic. And considering the subject matter, epic does seem in order. So I was very impressed when the film displayed a tone to match the man. Epic, but in a subtle, underplayed way.

There are generally men of this i...( read more)lk in the history of "conquered" or "besieged" nations. Usually they are rallying the troops to war like Leonidis or Wallace and are betrayed to the enemy and killed as heroes and martyrs. Ghandi rallied his people to passive resistance and was betrayed by politics. But rather than being only a martyr for his country and his people, his life inspired the world. And I think this grandiose vision was put on the screen with as much modesty and power as the man himself showed in life. Ben Kingsley immersed himself in the role to the point that you almost feel like you've been in the presence of Ghandi himself. It was an inspired and beautiful performance.

Why don't they make more films about nice people doing good things? BECAUSE THEY'RE BORING! That's why 90% of movies are about gangsters, geeks, and dysfunctional screw-ups. The only reason the movie deserves to be seen is for it's historical sweep and majestic cinematography. If...( read more) Gandi had any personal demons to contend with (like the rest of us human beings) ... ah hell, I can't even think of a properly snarky comment here, it's Gandi for crying out loud!

When he's good he's very, very good. And when he's bad he's Ghandi.

i did not have high expectations here, but this movie proved me wrong...it is a delicate but accurate bio of the man....it is not soapish or exaggerated....it is a perfect balance between two worlds (catchy movies and works of art) and this movie does not fail at making them work ...( read more)great together...

An epic. Ben Kingsley is outstanding in this undoubtedly controversial best picture, it triumphs on subject matter alone. I really liked the cinematography, but the editing I found choppy and irritating - it's hard to keep a narrative that's so involved interesting, and to presen...( read more)t it all in 3 hours or so, but there was so much flashing forward that it made me wonder what happened in between... which actually shows how, even if I didn't like the editing, it was effective.

Very, VERY few films have had the distinct ability to move and inspire me to the point where the effect is almost life-altering. "Gandhi" - the unbelievable, first-rate biopic on the historical figure - is truly one of those films, no question whatsoever. An unsurprising sweep fo...( read more)r the 1983 Academy Awards, this is without a doubt one of the last real "epic" motion pictures ever.

Chronicling the rich, unforgettable life of a one Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi - played to shocking perfection by the wonderful Sir Ben Kingsley - this is a film that I can say really, deeply affected me with its power, its scale, and of course, its timeless message of love and non-violence. As a matter of fact, ever since I first saw the film, and became much more aware of the back story, I can also say that Gandhi is now one of my biggest role models in life. I cannot fully express how much this great man's way of thinking - his words, his struggles, his accomplishments - has affected my own, for I am now a practicing pacifist. I am a firm believer in the value of non-violent protest, and have tried my best to apply that philosophy to most situations in my life. It has worked wonders for me, and has really changed how I view the world in terms of human nature and so forth. Like I said, VERY few films can do something like that to me.
