A movie of life, dispute, and patriotic extremists, Gangs of New York is an absolute joy to watch. Daniel Day-Lewis gives an unforgettable performance as Bill "The Butcher," a role in which he is a true-blooded American who despises the Irish immigrants. He was truly robbed of the Academy Award. This is also Martin Scorsese's dream movie. He had this idea and tried to make it for 30 years. It was worth the wait. This is my favorite film.
!0 oscar awards for a reason. Daniel-Day Lewis and Leo Dicaprio are great. Scorsese is one of the best directors of our time. I would have skipped on Cameron Diaz for the part of Jenny but everything else was incredible. And don't forget U2 on the soundtrack.
Amsterdam Vallon:
I'm not sure, sir. I never did quite figure it.
Bill:
I'm forty-seven. Forty-seven years old. You know how I stayed alive this long? All these years? Fear. The spectacle of fearsome acts. Somebody steals from me, I cut off his hands. He offends me, I cut out his tongue. He rises against me, I cut off his head, stick it on a pike, raise it high up so all on the streets can see. That's what preserves the order of things.
The gang wars of Five Points Section in Manhattan....am yet to see Daniel-day Lewis' performance in "There will be blood"...but I got a whiff of his acting from this....absolutely brilliant!!.....De Caprio showed what he's capable of....again!
One of Scorsese's better pictures. Daniel Day-Lewis is fucking genius in this movie, a downright chilling antagonist. And DiCaprio ain't to shabby himself. Superbly paced, all leading up to the explosive, amazing climax.
Great movie... The story of the movie is really a great one. This film features outstanding performances from Daniel Day-Lewis, 3rd favourite actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. This film was a masterful piece of art from grand director Martin Scorsese. The rest of the cast like Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas and Liam Neeson were good in this film aswell. I like this movie.
Martin Scorsese apparently thinks everyone in old (Irish bourroughs) of New York talks just like him, like he's Italian and from the Bronx. The problem is, his actors are supposed to be Irish and from Manhattan. Daniel Day Lewis is Irish himself, playing the Butcher, and Leo Dicaprio, pretty boy mobster, (which is an oxymoron) playing the Preacher's boy. This movie had brackish love story written all over it, problem is it wasn't between Leo and Daniel, but with lavish sets and a revised on the fly script, lost in a mess of twists and turns, never to come together in a final cloudy mess, while canons drop bombs from the harbor to the pier. Love the campaign where they said "nominated" in small letters, "for Academy Awards" in large print. It was not supposed to be funny when Lewis said, "The five points are like my fist..." but it was. What happened to Scorsese? Man. His other stuff was cool. It gets kuods for great set design. That's it.
this was a great movie, great story well done and Daniel day lewis is one of the greatest actors of our time he can express craziness better then few can. he definitely drives this movie making it just as great.
Not the best work of Martin Scorsese. The visualization is good, so is the dialogues. unfortunately not with the characters. Something's missing with the character. Luckily for this motion picture, the actors potray them well. Especially Daniel Day-Lewis.
I really liked this movie! Daniel Day-Lewis played the most incredible character in this movie. he was perfect and thought this movie was a really good movie and I liked the plot and characters.
Painted like a portrait in wonderful detail. The storyline is rich. The cast well assembled. It does however have the Leonardo commercial big budget unappealing quality that lives a weird aftertaste. You know going in that it will be good but not found a diamond in a pile of coal good.
An absolutely awesome intense crime thriller from the legendary Martin Scorsese. This film features outstanding performances from Daniel Day-Lewis, 3rd favourite actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Bill THE BUTCHER Cutting really well because he looks like throughout the whole film that he feels what he is doing is right when it is wrong. It is like World War 2 but in a city of America. Leonardo DiCaprio looks so cool as Amsterdam Vallon and so does Cameron Diaz as Jenny. This film was a masterful piece of art from my 6th favourite director Martin Scorsese. The rest of the cast like Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas and Liam Neeson were good in this film aswell. My fourth favourite Scorsese film.
Estilo 100% Martin Scorsese.
I've seen this film before, but I hadn't written a review for it. Plus I just watched it again quite recently so I figured I should. I personally really like this movie. Maybe it's the setting, the characters or just their funny clothes but for some reason I'm drawn to this film. I also think that the actors did an amazing job with their roles. Particularly Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting. That was an intense character and he was able to make a monster out of him but with some depth.
