This was better than I thought it would be. It wasn't really "cutesy" at all.

Georgia Rule is a portrait of three generations of women separated by a lack of communication between them. Lilly (Felicity Huffman) can no longer handle her rebellious teenage daughter Rachel (Lindsay Lohan). She sends her off for a summer of quiet in Idaho, where the mother gre...( read more)w up in a strict moral household. It's a place Lilly swore never to return to, because she is estranged from her mother, Georgia (Jane Fonda). Lilly thinks the steely grandmother can straighten Rachel out before heading off to college. The main reason for that is there are three very good performances in the film belonging to Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman, and Jane Fonda. Three generations of great actresses can carry a film to a degree, and this trio is up to the challenge. Lohan has the chops, and she plays a troubled teen all too well. Each actress is handed a big squishy ball of character behavior to work with, but they ingest the material wisely, extremely careful and attentive over what they offer the camera. It's a trifecta of dramatic depth that keeps "Rule" on target and emotionally real. The film would be nothing without them.

It's a creepy, tone-deaf movie about three generations of women. full review

Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

Not to excuse her apparent lack of professionalism, but can you blame Lohan for showing up to work in bad shape? full review

Certain words should be reserved for special occasions. 'Abysmal' is one of them, and Georgia Rule is as special as such occasions get. full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

It's Fonda who represents the movie's real lost opportunity. Now that she's back, which filmmaker is going to win the prize for figuring out how to put her gifts, and her looks, to use? full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Opening with a raunchy but light comic tone, the story veers into queasy territory. full review

Georgia Rule, directed by Garry Marshall from a script by Mark Andrus, swerves and spins, taking its predictable plot in some surprising directions.

Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

So facile that it posits "I love you" as the quick-fix remedy for its characters' myriad, deeply rooted grievances. full review
