Based on a novel by Frederick Kohner, spunky, young Francie (Sandra Dee) has been endowed with the nickname "Gidget" (short for girl midget) and fears that she'll never capture the attention of the fellows at the beach. However, when she befriends surfers Moondoggie (James Darren) and Kahoona (Cliff Robertson), she develops a huge crush on the two older men that could lead to romance or disappointment.

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"It's interesting in how very dated it has become, but all of that interest is extra-textual."
‑ Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy
"the clueless parents provide that Golden Age anchor to the piece that rings disquieting in the face of all the real wolves their Gidget is facing alone in the pathless wood."
‑ Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
"A sincere and perceptive coming-of-age teen film."
‑ Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
"A must-see artifact and lots of fun."
‑ Nell Minow, Movie Mom at Yahoo! Movies
"Look her, she's Sandra Dee! Innocent enough '50s romantic comedy doings."
‑ Steve Crum, Kansas City Kansan
