one scary movie that lives up to its promise, especially in the enjoyable yet spine-chilling first half and in the slam-bang big finish.
This film isn't really a sequel to the Eye... it does give a nod to them in a flashback, but that and the title is where the relationshp ends pretty much.
This is about a group of friends who set out to see ghosts using a book of 10 different methods. They are very successful. The film is full of some good scares... the Pangs are good at this kind of imagery. Don't be fooled though - this isn't really meant to be a scary movie. It's more of a farce and a send-up of horror films and their own work specifically.
This isn't a typical farce though - that's why the reviews are so mixed... it's too goofy to be a serious horror and it's too serious to be a comedy. It kinda plays out more like a ghost movie special effects reel intercut with some random scenes from a dull comedy.
There are some bright spots here with a dance-off and some of the ghost scenes are clever or funny.
Review scores might've improved if it was called something else, but maybe not as many people would've seen it... perhaps more would have. I don't know.
In this third installment, the Pang brothers took the movie to a more comedic side, however I find it interesting how it ended. The Eye 1 and 2 (the more serioud The Eye films) both ended in a happy note, but this one does not have a happy ending.
Within seconds, when an opening credit sequence that would have been right at home on the latest MTV reality show kicked in, I knew I was in trouble. Never let it be said that this film is anything but consistent, however: the rest of the film maintained pretty much the same level of badness from frame 1.
I have no idea if this film was meant as a parody of the previous installments in the series, but there is so much (bad) comedy here that it is inevitable to think of it that way. Previous scenes are referenced (my favorite sequence from the original, the "report card" and its aftermath, for instance is disrespected here in such a way by the same filmmakers responsable for it that it left a bad taste in my mouth...it was meant as a joke but i was too aghast to laugh) directly or mentioned, there is an extended dance sequence, a basketball is used as an object of terror, ghosts that have been introduced as characters appear and disappear randomly and the music fucking sucks. This film is a complete and utter mess from beginning to end.
On the plus sides, the filmmakers again opted for something different rather than rehash the same plotline from the first. Some sequences, despite being misdirected, manage to more or less work (in particular the ghost feeding) and the film moves fast enough that it is not quite as boring as humanly possible.
On the down side, aside from the shitty script, we have the direction by the Pang brothers. The same duo who masterfully crafted "The Eye", one of the creepiest films in recent memory, and did a decent job with its sequel, seem to have forgotten what they had previously displayed and instead rely on a bunch of flashy special effects and quick cuts. Part of what made "The Eye" so creepy is that the sequences were milked for all they were worth, the suspense was slow-burning. Who can forget that nearly interminable elevator sequence, for instance? Here the ghosts appear by the dozen, there is a jump-cut every time they show up and they pretty much just move and fly all over the place. The result is a typical hollywood horror shitfest, the last thing I expected.
Completists will want to seek this out, the rest can safely avoid it. Extremely disappointing.
This movie doesn´t have to be compared to the excellent movie: THE EYE. is not as good as the original, it doesn´t have the same atmosphere like the other film. I think that this movie was made for the sake of money. PLEASE NO MORE EYE´S SECUELS.
it's the pang brothers so it's solid, but this is an unserious sequel aimed at the youngsters. sucked except for a remake of the best scene from The Eye 1!
Has a good plot to begin with, plus some humour and interesting twist to the story. Best part is that...... all the 10 ways of seeing ghost is believed to be true by the Chinese culture >__<
A bit better than the second film but a little goofy as well. I liked the ending and the vibe it maintained but it still wasn't as good as the first film. Worth watching though.
Interesting format, but too commercial and ridiculous at some times tryin to combine terror with humor, failing wretchedly, but is a good blend in order to entertain for a few minutes in a empty way, so I think it will be good for some kind of people, not for me.
Funny, really funny...
"ive lost my report card"
love kate yeung in this especially when you first see her carrying a black cat while going to play hide and seek.
If this had been done seriously it would have been scary...really
the eye i am referring to is a pang brothers film but was not released in 2005. it is a great foreign ghost story film. a lot creepier than damn poltergeist that is for sure!
