Jewish residents in the town of Ferrara deal with the growing prejudice of the fascists led by Benito Mussolini. David (Rupert Everett) is a college student who loves Nora (Valeria Golino), but she converts to Catholicism and marries a fascist, renouncing her Jewish upbringing. Dr. Fadigati (Philippe Noiret) is a homosexual physician who falls for a young boxer. The physician must heal himself when he is beaten up and robbed by the pugilist after a failed love affair.
