Alessandro Nivola, Anna Friel, David Beckham, Frances Barber, Kuno Becker

How far would you go to live your dreams? When Santiago Munez is given the chance of a lifetime, he must leave his family, his life in Los Angeles and everything that he knows to travel halfway around...( read more  read more... ) the globe to England and into a completely foreign world--the exciting, fast-paced and glamorous world of international soccer. As an underprivileged Mexican-American immigrant growing up in the poor section of Los Angeles, Santiago seemed destined to follow his father's path in life: laboring at menial jobs to earn just enough money to support his family. Naturally gifted, his amazing talent on the soccer field was wasted in recreation league games while he could only dream of playing on the world stage of professional soccer. But when a British scout discovers his talent and gets him a tryout with one of England's premier soccer clubs, Newcastle United, Santiago must choose between his father's fate and his own destiny. Now alone in a world where soccer is a religion and players are gods, this underdog must prove that he's got the talent and determination to make it amongst the best in the world.

The poster says it all: "The impossible dream". At best the movie has its moments, like in the beginning when he's struggling in the States and trying to get along with his father.

But when he's moving to England and getting it all in just a month... It's impossible! He has his...( read more) ups and downs but in the end he meets David Beckham (should've been avoided) and scores the big goal. And gets a contract of course. And falls in love. And will star in the sequel... With David Beckham. (Silent shout of terrible pain)

But if he's in England, why the fuck doesn't he drink a pint of Guinness? Instead he pursues a career at kicking a ball (or trying to) for 90 minutes. As you can see, I'm more of a hockey guy. Football/Soccer ain't my game.

Oh yeah, and the acting is average at best, just like the storyline. Recommended for Premier league fans and all other fans of the sport.

Usually I hate sports movies, but this one was really good and I only fell asleep once because I was dead tired.

There's no real point in trying to have a cinephile conversation with me about Goal!, I loved it because I love football and once dreamed of becoming a professional footballer too. That's it. Anyone in my position will love the film too, and anyone else is free to trash it...( read more) all they want. See if I care.
