Plot: Based on the Dennis Lehane novel about two Boston area detectives investigating a little girl's kidnapping, which ultimately turns into a crisis both professionally and personally.
kinda boring at first, but the interesting twist of events towards the end is the true essence of the movie
Deep and sad and made me think about ethics and choices and what is right and what is wrong and where is the line between right and wrong. Should a child be with her biological parents who don't care that much or with people who love her deeply?
Actually, I'm not impressed so much with this movie just like what other people said... The story just flows so slowly in the beginning but when it comes to the half of this movie, it just flows very vastly with uncovering too many secrets on it that makes me a little shocked... I think Ben Affleck did a pretty good job on this movie project, knowing that he already got an Oscar for his work on screenplay, so maybe know he wants to move a little further again as a director and I think that it's good... Choosing his brother, Casey Affleck, as the main character of this movie can do something good but maybe can difficult you because if the relationship don't go well, it just will scores a total fluke... Luckily for Ben, he did the right thing by choosing Casey Affleck as Patrick Kenzie, he just make this movie becomes great... Casey shows that he is one of potential actors for the future by showing his great acting in this movie... He shows pretty great acting in here with his emotion and his talk with his unique accent are the winning performance for the role he played in this movie... Too bad the other cast didn't show his best performance... Michelle Monaghan did try hard, but his performance didn't help out her for the role she played in this movie.. Two senior actors, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris, did do their best but for me it just not enough... I think they can do a lot more with their performance in this movie... The surprise comes from Amy Ryan who stole the attention by her stunning performance as a bad mother in this movie, but I think the Academy Awards did the right thing by not giving her the Oscar because for me maybe her performance was great but not outstanding... I just kinda disappointed by the ending, it just shows that there are no more justice in this world for an innocent child like Amanda in this movie... It just shows us how the good thing and the bad thing just separated by a thin separator and we as human just want to do the right thing in our minds but maybe we don't know the consequences that we will face in the future, yet it for us or for other people...
una pelicula interesante que tiene uno de los twist mas brutales que he visto en alguna pelicula por buen tiempo
Ben Affleck did a great job directing this touching film. The film magnificently explores the case of the missing girl while all the while making the audience think about larger issues that surround the lives and destinies of children and their families and society in large. Casey Affleck was remarkably well cast for the character. Must see!
After feeling like I saw the Oscar winning Mystic River, a kidnap-thriller, taking place in Boston, based on a Dennis Lehane novel, not too long ago; Gone Baby Gone didn't seem appealing. It looked like pretty much the same thing, only it was directed by Ben Affleck, not Clint Eastwood, who I consider a bit of a film-making genius. Affleck, who after busting out on the scene, writing and starring in Good Will Hunting, had devolved into stumbling his way through some horrible big budget action flicks, then took a break for a few years. I didn't have much faith in his directing abilities based on that resume. But after receiving mostly rave reviews, I decided I should see it for myself.
The film is extremely similar to Mystic River, they shot in the same neighborhoods, featuring the same kind of characters. Only instead of seeing a kidnapping from the point-of-view of the father, we're seeing it from the investigator's. Casey Affleck, in possibly the performance of his life, plays Patrick Kenzie, a Southie-local with a knack for snooping. When the missing girl's parents hire him as a private investigator, he gets full access to the case and cooperation from the police, which they're initially not happy about. He has a checkered past, which helps him get information from the local lowlifes that won't talk to the cops. Along for the ride is his partner and girlfriend, played by Michelle Monagahan. They catch the scent of a trail and follow it to a local drug-dealer, who from the evidence they've collected, appears to be the kidnapper.
Just about when you think they have it all figured out, the film does a complete 180, leaving the viewer and the characters fully confused. It picks up a few months later, and they're no closer to the truth. They've been told to leave the case, but he's obsessed with figuring out what happened. Starting to respect him for his ruthlessness are a couple of cops, played by Ed Harris and character actor John Ashton. They bring him in on some other cases that may be involved with the kidnapping, where he gets into a few nasty situations, but finds some new clues and new suspects, leading him down a completely different path than before. This being a mystery-thriller, of course not all the characters are telling the truth, which leads to a bit of a surprise ending, and some major moral choices for Patrick.
After having some reservations about seeing this film, because of it's extreme similarities to Mystic River, I believe that Gone Baby Gone, is the superior film. The acting in both films is extremely well done, top-notch performances from everyone involved. But I think Gone, is a better focused, more entertaining film. Affleck's intimate knowledge of Boston, helps give the film a more of an insider's perspective, where Eastwood's seemed more stand-offish. They're both excellent films, you really couldn't go wrong with either one, and if you're into a depressing night with Boston, you could have a hell of a double feature. What makes the difference is, that I don't think I'll ever revisit Mystic River, but I can see giving Gone Baby Gone another viewing. Most of all, the film stands as an impressive directing debut for Ben Affleck, and I'm highly interested in seeing what film he does next.

"I always believed it was the things you don't choose that makes you who you are. Your city, your neighborhood, your family. People here take pride in these things, like it was something they'd accomplished. The bodies around their souls, the cities wrapped around those. I lived on this block my whole life; most of these people have. When your job is to find people who are missing, it helps to know where they started. I find the people who started in the cracks and then fell through. This city can be hard. When I was young, I asked my priest how you could get to heaven and still protect yourself from all the evil in the world. He told me what God said to His children. "You are sheep among wolves. Be wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves."*
"Cheese, if you ever disrespect her again like that, I'm gonna pull your fuckin' card, okay? So you're saying you didn't do it, fine. We'll take your money, and we'll be on our way. When it turns out you're lying, I'm gonna spend every nickel of that money to fuck you up. I'm gonna bribe cops to go after you, I'm gonna pay guys to go after your weak fuckin' crew, and I'm gonna tell all the guys I know that you're a C.I. and a rat, and I know a lot of people. And after that, you're gonna wish you listened to me, 'cause your shitty pool hall crime syndicate headquarters is gonna get raided, and your doped-up bitches are gonna get sent back to Laos, and this fuckin' retard right here is gonna be testifying against you for a reduced sentence, while you're gettin' cornholed in your cell by a gang of crackers. 'Cause from what I've heard, the guys that get sent up Concord for killing kids, life's a motherfucker."*

I knew I liked Casey Affleck. And who knew Ben could direct? Really good movie with some haunting questions. What would I have done?
The last forty minutes of the movie were very well acted and compelling. The first hour and half was long and drawn out.
Being from Boston, Ben Afflek has his pulse on the town and it comes through in his directing. Lots of gritty places and people, and a good story to fit into it all.
The script is excellent for this movie. There are some nice plot twists. There is also a good ensemble cast. This movie touches on some dark subjects but it handles them well. Check this one out.
Definitely going into my top 10 !!
Great by all means...
Everything about it was perfect, the plot, the topic it handled amazingly, the extraordinary acting by the whole cast, and the many twists which in my opinion totally impower a movie..
I was amazed by Ben Affleck's directing potential, I never thought of him as a good actor though !! But Casey's performance, just wow !!
Ed Harris of course manages to sort of, steal some of the scenes he's in..
A film that has decency and intriguing concepts, which for most of the time can just about hold an audience. That is until the end and by the end of it the conventional aspects take over a film that is supposed to be taken more seriously. It's almost a shame by the end, but the city is well shot from suburban spirit and underground darkness. It's a good try.
holy crap. I would just like to say that if Ben Affleck never stepped in front of another movie camera, I'd be fine. This movie was phenomenal especially for a first time director. It's also good to see Casey finally out of Ben's shadow. Awesome story, great cast.
I haven't seenany of the yaear's most recogniced films. but so far this is to me the best of the year. As good as Mystic river.
FREAKIN AMAZING, i have a question, why wasnt casey nominated for this movie?!?! Ed Harris and him together is amazing, i loved it
honestly, didn't think it'd be this good. but casey affleck was good and the plot line was different, not as predictable.
This movie made my mum and i quarrel a bit, no a lot about the endig.. i won't reveal anything but just know that it's a ùovie about good or bad values, are your morals and values good for theone you loove.. do you really think acting according to the law is the best thing to do ?
I looved the story and how it was directed, the dialogues were harsh but realistic and Casey Affleck did an amazing job. I also liked how the female protagonist was really there by his side.
I really knew nothing about this movie, that is until I saw the trailer when it first came out about 5 months ago. I was instantly drawn to it, and now having had the chance to see it I can firmly say that it's one of the best films of 2007. Ben Affleck's career is no longer the source of jokes. This, combined with his should-have been Oscar-nominated work Hollywoodland, establishes Ben as one of the most versatile figures in Hollywood. It's evident that he has enormous talent as a director/screenwriter, and I really hope he continues to add to his list, because this is one of the finest directoral debuts in recent memory. Affleck puts together the best ensemble of the year. Brother Casey Affleck proves his talent as a leading man, and newcomer Amy Ryan is stunning. Michelle Monaghan is a great supporting player, along with Amy Madigan. Hollywood veterans Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman argueable steal the whole show. Both actor should get supporting actor recognition come Oscar time.
Everything about this film works. The casting, the direction, the script...everything is so good. The film also looks beautiful. Come time to make my yearly "should have been nominated" list, Gone Baby Gone will hold at least 8 nominations.
The film's subject matter is of course, at times, very unsettling, hitting very close to what is happening in the world now. That's part of the film's power. It's ability to make the audience think about the world that we live in today is simply genius. Plus, rarely does a movie have you thinking "what would I have done in that situation?"
Gone Baby Gone does run parallels between the other Dennis Lehane-based film Mystic River, but in my opinion this is a much stronger film on all levels. Do yourself a favor and go see this film. It's great.
This is a movie that makes you think after it's over. "What would I do in that situation?" Good story that raises an interesting question.
I have to say, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. There were so many innovative twists and turns that sometimes, I found it hard to decide which way was up. The cast was stellar! Casey Affleck really shone, Ed Harris was asshole-tastic, and Amy Madigan stole the show! Great effort put out by Ben on this one. No wonder it was nominated for so many awards.
Who Knew Ben Affleck had it in him? I knew his brother Casey could do good acting, but Ben directing adequately? Well blow me down. I really enjoyed it. It's emotional and personal. It's tense and mysterious. But it went on for too long. That is my only gripe.
Bom filme. Definitivamente o Ben Affleck deveria se concentrar mais em ficar atrás da câmera, não faz feio.

If anyone knew was the word ADAPTATION meant they wouldnt complain about leads being wrong opr stuff being changed from the book. Most of the time the movie is trying to get away from the book so its normal to have what seems like a wrong casting and some changes.
if anyone has read any of the patrick and angie books the would realize how wrong the leads are for their parts...other then that it was a fine enjoyable movie
