Ethereal, slow-paced and sometimes oddly beautiful, this film would probably have been one of my favorites in my mid teens, when I had a rather morbid fascination with images of death/murder (the mutual appreciation of death is what brings the loner Morni and the popular but unhappy Kamiyama, the teen leads, together). Nevertheless, I'm sure this worked better as a novel and a manga than it does as a film - the repetition and otherworldly photography tires after a while. Saying that, the film definitely has a quiet power, there are some very talented people behind and in front of the cameras, and the ending is stunning.
