Plot: From two-time Academy Award® winning director Milos Forman and three-time Academy Award® winning producer Saul Zaentz, GOYA’S GHOSTS is a sweeping historical epic, told through the eyes of celebrated ...( read more read more... )Spanish painter Francisco Goya (STELLAN SKARSGARD). Set against the backdrop of political turmoil at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and start of the invasion of Spain by Napoleon’s army, the film captures the essence and beauty of Goya’s work which is best known for both the colorful depictions of the royal court and its people, and his grim depictions of the brutality of war and life in 18th century Spain. JAVIER BARDEM is Brother Lorenzo, an enigmatic, cunning member of the Inquisition’s inner circle who becomes infatuated with Goya’s teenage muse, Ines (NATALIE PORTMAN), when she is falsely accused of heresy and sent to prison. The film stars an impressive ensemble cast including Bardem, Portman and Skarsgard as well as strong supporting roles from Randy Quaid, Michael Lonsdale, Jose Luis Gomez and Mabel Rivera. Directed by Milos Forman, with a screenplay by Forman and Jean-Claude Carrière (BIRTH, VALMONT), GOYA’S GHOSTS is produced by Saul Zaentz. Forman is a two-time Academy Award winner whose directing credits include ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, AMADEUS, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, HAIR, RAGTIME, VALMONT, and MAN ON THE MOON. Saul Zaentz is a three-time Academy Award winning producer whose credits include ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, AMADEUS and THE ENGLISH PATIENT. Zaentz also received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science (AMPAS) in 1997.

Not about Goya's life. Despite being well-made, the plot twists and turns get ridiculous after awhile and no character ever develops into anyone worth caring about. What's worse, Natalie portman disappears early on and comes back hideous. That's just hard to watch.

It was also about the painter Francisco Goya and his work. It was a historic movie depicting how much power the church had upon it's people which I didn't know.

Starts out intriging, but slowly begins to take a turn to the realm of "huh?" I expected more from Milos Forman. Javier Bardem is perfectly creepy though! -Trevor

Goya suffered from witnessing several upheavals in Spain from the inquisition's height through to the revolution and the reinstallation of The Catholic orthodoxy and eventually spiraled out of control having witnessed too much. The focus, as many have stated is less biographical than in capturing the atmosphere of church and state before and after Napoleon's influence, and the 'ghosts' which terrorized Goya's imagination and brought him to the pinnacle of his craft.

Not noticeably well-realised, the dark machinations in this film make one want to give up on humanity. However, there is something to be said for the power of the utter hopelessness that is evoked throughout the movie. It doesn't leave leave you for days.

There was a long debate between myself and others why this film is called Goya's Ghosts. Sure, Goya features often, but it's not really about him. It's more that he is the artist whose eyes and art the story is seen through.

Though it portrays a brutal era in history, the movie is (refreshingly) only moderately violent. It doesn't delve deep into Goya's life or the Inquisition, but it would appear to be historically accurate.

It really works due to Javier Bardem. His character, Father Lorenzo, screws people over to a large extent, yet he brings the character across with such emotion that in the end, the viewer is sympathetic.

Worth your time, worth your money, but it lacks something. I'll be sure to inform you as soon as I figure it out myself.

I liked the ending, it was catchy and overall I ask myself, why wasn't this movie made in spanish if it involved most of Spain in it? Thats right the director said he dont speak spanish -.-'. Good good depiction of the 1700s though, but I found something was missing, and as for acting I found Bardem n Portman to be good of their corresponding roles. Point is, he paints n then ppl get messed up. :)

My first thought was. why make a film about goya? has anything exciting happend in his life. The answer was no, nothing exciting really happend in his life. But the film is still a pretty nice portrait of 1700th century Europe and the inquisition. And Natalie Portman does some really good acting.

Very interesting movie about how religion would punish innocent people. Some scenes were a little boring & could've been removed.

Goya's Ghosts is an interesting historical movie because it doesn;t actually focus on the title character more so on the figures he paints. Once they pose for him they become one of the Ghosts in the filsm titles. Strong performances from Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman and Stellen Skarsgard puts in a good performance for the time he's on camera.

''I met her once... don't recall her being quite so ugly though. How did she have so many lovers?''
''She was the Queen, Your Majesty.''

Painter Francisco Goya faces a scandal involving his muse, who is labeled a heretic by a monk.

    Javier Bardem: Brother Lorenzo

    Natalie Portman: Inés / Alicia

    Stellan Skarsgård: Goya

Although Goya is the protagonist in this epic drama, his inner self is examined no deeper than the souls of his fellows. The plot of Ghosts is driven by flawed people, making the wrong moves, struggling to do the right thing but held back by their ignorance and lack of power to stand up against the State. It's an examination of Inquisition Spain, wars of liberation and political self-interest and as such is as timeless, with its modern echoes in Guantanamo, CCTV and the proposed extended UK police powers, as any psychological drama.

Forman's first film in 7 years is an absorbing, powerful and stylish melodrama against a backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition. The award-winning Czech director wisely called on Jean-Claude Carriere to co-write the script, given the latter's penchant for subjects linked to religious criticism and political upheaval.

The true central role goes to Lorenzo, a kind of Everyman who begins as a Catholic monk, decides to sacrifice his 'dangerous' artist friend's muse, Inez, to the Inquisition to keep Goya at a safe distance, falls from grace and joins Napoleon's marauders, returning as a revolutionary.

Inez is expendable, or as today's world leaders would put it, collateral. Goya's efforts to sort everything out only at best confuse them further, just as everyone else's colliding actions do, especially Inez' father's efforts to free her . That seems to be the underlying theme: life as a storm of accidents, masquerading as plans. The last we see of Everyman, he is in a scene which is far more nightmarish than even Ken Russell managed.

A beauty of a piece Goya is a piece of Historic Period Art in film from Milos Forman.

This movie is a train wreck from beginning to end. It is poorly written and poorly acted and it is really only entertaining because it is so ridiculous that it borders on funny. I mean, raise your hand if you really wanted to see Randy Quaid as the king of Spain... I didn't think so. And poor Natalie Portman, from innocent to freed "heretic, her jaw packed with Kleenex ala "Godfather" and oh-so-bad complexion that never cleared up carrying around a poor baby looking past the camera for her REAL mommy, pushed me over the edge.

The script reads like one of the "choose your own adventure" books I used to read as a kid: at several moments through the film, several outcomes are possible, and none of the actions preceding them lead with any certainty to the way the film actually plays out. Ironically, the film is also predictable, especially its meager attempts at leavening the mood through small bits of humor.

I'd give it no stars if I could.

What can I say? Portman is amazing, as always. The cast is mostly what makes this movie so worth seeing, although I had my problems seeing Quaid in the role of the King of Spain. Moreover the plot and the character development are not only entertaining, but simply a good work. At points Skarsgard appears little next to Portman and Bardem.

Well, I found the story puzzling with a lot of turnovers but I didn't like the end. Moreover, it is quite strange when you notice how each character (or actor) is shifting between different behaviors. Bardem: strong but quiet ecclesiastical, manipulated ecclesiastical, charismatic lord, rebuked by clergy. Portman: wealthy noble, destitute prisoner, happy mendiant, she even play the role of her daughter which is completely different. So two stars for actors habilities, one for the story but I'd like to see more focus over this character-actor screenplay.

    Forman has done better.

It's no secret Goya's Ghost cruelly lacks a central character or something called a 'plot'; but those are mistakes I can get usually get over really quick. It is not the case here. The Historical events (portrayed with a big H) spin out of control as they enter and depart the story with more or less the impact they should provoke. The cinematography provides, however, an eye-pleasing diversion from the dull screenplay painted with surprisingly silly moments. Its 'supper scene' somehow manages to become one of the filmmaker's most cleverly constructed an-eye-for-an-eye scene, and the three leads (particularly Portman) deliver, as expected, stellar performances. But the whole thing, despite its panache, is only interesting in bits and pieces.

And I must say, it's cheap to whine about this, but... English-speaking people in Spain and France?

A fantastic reflection on the relationship between power and truth, this movie has been sorely underappreciated and poorly distributed. There's really no excuse for it.
