"Goyokin" starts in 1831 as a clan steals gold from a shipwrecked boat that was intended for the shogunate. In order to cover their trail, they kill everybody in a nearby fishing village. Unbeknowst to them, there is an eyewitness(Ruriko Asaoka). Magobei Wakizaka(Tatsuya Nakadai), a high ranking samurai, is so disgusted at what he sees that he leaves his old life behind, including his wife Shino(Yoko Tsukasa) and her brother Rokugo Tatewaki(Tetsuro Tamba). Three years later, Magobei has hit rock bottom, working at a carnival where assassins try to kill him.

"Goyokin" is an atmospheric samurai film with great set pieces, set at the end of an era.(To mark this, there is a brief display of firearms.) In trying to desperately stave off the inevitable, the clan is doing the unthinkable by resorting to theft and murder. So, the ends never justify the means, right?
