A gut wrenching and heartbreaking film about the loss of a spouse and dealing with the emotional roller coaster of breaking the news to your children.... John Cusak gives an Oscar worthy performance as Stanley, the husband/father who loses his wife to the war in Iraq. Touching,...( read more) sad and yet leaves one with hope. An excellent film...

Grace Is Gone is a movie that absolutely broke my heart.
This film was written and directed by James C. Strouse and is the story of loss. A dad finds out his wife has died serving our country and struggles with how he is going to tell his two daughters that their mother is gone....( read more)
John Cusack is my all time favorite actor. He was nothing short of amazing in this film, as Stanley. His performance was honest and real. You could feel the love he felt for his wife and for his daughters. I absolutely loved that they stripped him down for this role, and that he was very plain. It made it more real to me.
Shelan O'Keefe and Gracie Bednarczyk did a beautiful job as Heidi and Dawn in this film. They interacted well, almost as if they were real sisters. They all had a great chemistry as a family. You could sense the love they shared for each other and the love they had for their mother.
I probably went through a whole box of Kleenex while watching this movie.
Grace Is Gone is a touching, heart breaking story. It shouldn't be missed, if you are a fan of John Cusack. His performance was brilliant.

Heart warming and breaking all at the same time.

In James C. Strouse's directorial debut, he choses to examine the effects of war on a family. However, he never preaches about lost fathers and mothers, or fighting for the sake of fighting - the film's simple focus is about a man who loves his daughters. That's it. It's incredib...( read more)ly minimalistic and completely predictable at all times, but it's supposed to be. I can never fault a movie that knows what it wants to be and then achieves it to some moderate success.

John Cusack plays Stanley, a manager at a home goods store. This, however, is not where he wants to be - years earlier, he had enlisted in the military but was eventually sent home for his poor eyesight. He met his wife in bootcamp and they now have two daughters, however the family struggles while their mother is at war. Shortly into the film, Stanley is met with two unidentified men at his door dressed in full uniform. He immediately knows what has happened, and from the very beginning is unsure of what to do and how to break the news to his daughters. He's completely overwhelmed and unprepared for the tragedy, so rather than having to tell his daughters the news he packs them up in the car and heads for "Enchanted Gardens" in Florida.

Although the idea of a roadtrip is rather cliche and redundant in films, to me it's something that never fails. We can all instantly recognize the motel rooms, long never-changing highways, and truck stops. It's familiar subject matter presented as a sort of adventure or journey, and therefore I always feel it's always entertaining and real. Saying this film is "fun" to watch doesn't exactly work, but the characters and the situations provided made for some very truthful situations.

The film's strength is carried by John Cusack, who is at the top of his game. Stepping away from the quirky bachelor role, Cusack takes the role of a more refined and real character. My only problem with this was that it came off as a bit forced... it was an actor saying "This is how a depressed guy should be, and i'm going to do it." There's not much room for creativity and therefore we never look at him as Stanley, rather just "Hey, that's John Cusack!" It's a great performance, but it's almost a caricature of real emotion.

Cusack's daughters, played by Shelan O'Keefe and Gracie Bednarczyk, are both very impressive. In such a serious role, they're both able to hang with experienced actors like Cusack and Alessandro Nivola quite well. Shelan definitely looks to have a very bright future ahead of her as she tackled a fairly complex and intimating role for a young actor.

Sure, they idea of a roadtrip is cookie cutter, but at it's core I think this is a film with a lot of heart and it works fairly well. It's not a great film and nothing i'll remember a few years down the line, but for what it is it's a moving piece of work. Strouse's directing is slow and methodical, and the film's highest points are achieved through moments of silence. Grace is Gone is no Little Miss Sunshine, but it's certainly a breath of fresh air amongst all the war dramas like In the Valley of Elah. I'm very much looking forward to whatever projects Strouse takes on in his future.

On a sidenote that only I will care about, there's a scene where the family drives down a street that's 5 minutes away from my house. It was especially funny since a few times they go back to the same street to show time pass... i'm sure they thought no one would notice!

Grace is Gone is graceful, for the lack of a better word. When Stan (Cusack) receives ill fated news of the death of his wife in Iraq, he decides to take his two daughters on a road trip to somehow at least temporarily forget his wife's death and to think of ways to tell the sad ...( read more)news to his daughters. This film is full of emotions much thanks to John Cusack's riveting performance as the widowed husband. His performance here is so underrated, he deserves much much more than that. The two child leads were awesome as well.

The biggest thing about this film is that the music is supervised by Clint Eastwood. Like, Dirty Harry "Make my day" Clint Eastwood I kid you not. Nice move there Clint you supervised the music really well. Its sad, emotional, riveting, wonderful, glorious and magical. This short 80 minute film delivers. Its satisfying.

Excellent drama even though a bit too much for my taste. if you are a John Cusack fan and you don't mind him in roles where he's not supposed to be comical, this is for you. best seen as tv material.

Oh, John Cusack. It's just like you to take a cross-country road trip to an amusement park instead of telling a child something more important, like, oh, say, HER MOM DIED. I heart you.

This movie made me grieve intensely, in a way that still surprises me.

Grace is Gone is an intense movie, but it's definitely not great and probably doesn't deserve 4 stars. I'm giving is 4 stars anyway. John Cusack and the girls are very good. And the message of how one death, one sacrifice for our country, affects three people so deeply is poig...( read more)nant. I think many people forget about the families. How the death of a soldier is a great loss to our country...but it is also a husband living without his wife and 2 daughters now motherless.
