Gregory Kirschling, Entertainment Weekly
[The film] does a very thorough job of reducing every recognizable member of the cast to probable career lows.
-
Ronnie Scheib, Variety
The Sandler-patented mix of the deliberately offensive and the blatantly sentimental loses something in the maestro's absence.
-
Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle
Grandma's Boy is an Adam Sandler comedy without Adam Sandler, which is kind of like getting a root canal without the dentist.
-
Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail
An Adam Sandler movie without Adam Sandler, it turns out, is not necessarily an improvement.
-
Jami Bernard, New York Daily News
Even silly fun needs serious talent behind it.
-
Gene Seymour, Newsday
The kind of laid-back goofball comedy custom-designed to chase away any self-respecting respectable person and play to the good-natured slackers out there in the dark. If you're among the latter, you've found a home. If you're not, you have been warned.
-
Heather Boerner, Common Sense Media
Absolutely dreadful and offensive comedy.
-
Ethan Alter, Film Journal International
Even if you aren't under the influence, you might find yourself chuckling at various points during the movie, if only in disbelief at some of the things the cast is asked to do.
-
Amelie Gillette, AV Club
If nothing else, Grandma's Boy answers the question of what a ramshackle early Adam Sandler movie would be like without Adam Sandler.
-
Nathan Rabin, AV Club
Hilarity fails to ensue in the workplace or at home, in spite of the late introduction of a fighting, driving monkey.
-
Stefan Birgir Stefansson, sbs.is
better than some sandler movies
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
...one puerile, thoroughly unfunny joke after another...
-
Jim Lane, Sacramento News & Review
The chief value of this stinker is as a glimpse of how bad Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and The 40-Year-Old Virgin might have been if they'd been written by Covert, Barry Wernick and Nick Swardson, and directed by Nicholaus Goossen.
-
David Cornelius, eFilmCritic.com
Covert is so obnoxious, so lacking in the basic understanding of comic timing, that we understand why he has to get his buddy Sandler to give him work.
-
Urban Cinefile Critics, Urban Cinefile
Grandma's Boy is a better series of spoofs than anything we currently see on that show. It's an affectionate and tight-knit comedy.
-
Chris Carle, IGN Movies
Those who like America Pie and its spawn will likely find comfort in the jokes here.
-
Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema
Grandma's Boy is what would result if Adam Sandler and his high profile co-stars bailed on a movie and the understudies took over.
-
Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle
It's gross, it's cheesy, and it's baked beyond all reasonable limits, but this everything-and-the-kitchen-sink comic soufflé still manages to be goofily entertaining beyond all expectations.
-
Linda Cook, Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)
"Grandma's Boy" is a pot- and potty-mouthed relative of an Adam Sandler movie.
-
Bruce Kirkland, Jam! Movies
Like the dead kitty left to rot under grandma's couch, this movie stinks!

Starring a few of Adam Sandler's frequent co-stars, Grandma's Boy is a rare Happy Madison production without Sandler himself. Star Allen Covert (the guy soaping his ass in Mr.Deeds)is better than expected, as are Shirley Jones (Partridge family) and Linda Cardellini. Remember her as Scooby Doo's Velma? This film is a stoner comedy to be sure but also a love-fest for computer game geeks.
This is simple fun. I laughed frequently, but some of this material is only funny if you really are stoned, a little like Cheech and Chong. The best example might be the whole Dante-chimp-lion bit. Also, the office at Brainiac is completely wacky yet somehow imaginable. Having never been a part of a company like this, I imagine JP's robot voice not completely out of place.
Its laugh out loud funny, may be not as outrageous as The Hangover, but I enjoyed Grandma's Boy more than that or most recent Sandler's flicks.

Grandma's Boy is one enjoyable stoner comedy. I love this film. Though never really hilarious, the film is fairly humourous and is pretty well done. The plot is simple, but what makes this film work is the comical cast involved. Though not perfect, Grandma's Boy is at times charming, and is a lot of fun. This is the perfect comedy to watch with friends. The film is one of the few Happy Madison productions that I've found to be quite good and funny. Grandma's Boy is a fine little film with a good heart. This a fairly original stoner comedy that shouldn't be passed up. Sure it's not, Cheech and Chong, The Big Lebowski or Harold & Kumar, but Grandma's Boy is still a film worth seeing. I'd say it belongs on the list of the memorable stoner flicks for sure. I enjoyed this films and it's characters. The cast are very funny, especially Joel David as J.P the arrogant game designer who constantly makes robot noises. if you're having friends over for a movie night and want something that funny, and with mindless fun, pop this one in your DVD player. Guaranteed to provide you with a good time and good laughs. Grandma's Boy is a lot of fun and over every film that Happy Madison has put out, this is one of their best films. The Jokes are decent, but the characters themselves make the film what it is. Grandma's Boy is far from the worst comedy film, it has its faults, but as a whole it works well because it's simply a fun film to watch.

Look my friends are right, ok. Its good. thanks to them, i know coke is good and this is too. i think.

Allen Covert (a frequent collaborator of Adam Sandler's) and Nick Swardson make a dynamic duo like no other in this, one of the funniest films I have ever seen.

Succeedes where most of other movies of its kind like Kevin Smith's films or Sandler's boring flicks fail, It knows what it is & keeps its silly fun tone till the end, It doesn't embarrass itself with trying to inject some sort of moral , it doesn't waste any time to depict a serious romance which never works in this type of films, Special mention goes to the good cast & specially Allen Covert who is actually fun to watch unlike unfunny so-called comedians like Sandler or Ben Stiller

Well, fuck it, this was a fun stoner/geek comedy. If you're in the mood for it that is. Allen Covert is everything Adam Sandler is not in the main lead, no idea why the guy keeps playing secondary characters for Sandler.

Grandma's Boy Director: Nicholaus Goossen Starring: Allen Covert, Linda Cardellini, Peter Dante, Doris Roberts, Shirley Knight, Shirley Jones This film slipped in under the radar in Australia because of it's low gross in the US. The only reason I can see for it not making any bank is the fact that it did not having a "name" actor in the film. Grandma's Boy has got to be the funniest movie I've seen since Anchorman: The legend of Ron Burgundy. I actually was choking on my popcorn I was laughing that much! The film follows video game tester and stoner Alex (a Mel Gibson looking Allen Covert) has he gets the ass from his apartment and has to live with his Grandma (Doris Roberts) and her two roommates (Shirley Jones and Shirley Knight). To make himself sound cool to his much younger co-workers, Alex makes out that he is living with 3 sex mad hot girls. This comes back to haunt him when he finds himself fancying new employee Samantha (Linda Cardellini). The film was produced by Adam Sandlers Happy Madison Production company so the film is full of Sandler alumni (including cameos from Rob Schneider and David Spade). If your looking for a film with no deep meaning and it's only intention is to make you laugh at gross out and inappropriate humour, this is the film for you.

The plot isn't that thick, in fact there isn't that much of a plot in my opinion. Nonetheless, there are plenty of good movies out there that don't have a strong plots, and this movie holds its own.
The movie is witty, has great one liners, and is overall thoroughly amusing. If you're looking for a movie with meaning, then don't bother. But if you're looking for an hour and a half to kill and have a good amount of laughs along the way, I would definitely say you should see the movie.

This movie makes me sad to be alive.

Finally a stoner comedy where the stoner part is actually a touch real. And the gaming stuff, close enough to real that I got all the "gamedork" allusions and references. Better than your average comedy, as it is actually funny. The lead actor is not my favorite for this role, but he does a decent job. Attention, Terri of Reno 911 fans, Nick Swardson is the protagonist's witty lil Sundance. Kevin Nealon's always great at absurd roles, here as a mid-lifer heavy into "the Asian fad" and I dunno his name, but the programmer is a funny and modern take of the eccentric prodigy character. Doris Roberts and her gang do a great job playing hammered old ladies. And did I mention that the uber cool weed dealer's got a ninja monkey? Yep, this movie has something for everyone.... who is awesome !Ka-Kow!

Allen Covert is fucking hilarious. For further proof, see his version of Ben Stone. A great stoner comedy, take it from me.
-
It was childish behavior at the max but was kind of funny.
-
Formulaic and predictable, but extremely irrevernt and really damn hillarious
-
Covert's got next to no presence and the rest of the cast carries him. The good news is that it's damn funny when he's not around. It's basically an Adam Sandler movie without Adam Sandler in it. So yeah, it could've been great...

Lucky Number Slevin – Probably too clever by half, this Tarantino knockoff is gloriously twisty and far more twisted than you may have thought from the surface. It’s a puzzle piece that winds up being vastly entertaining. Josh Hartnett does the best work of his career in an effervescent comedic performance, playing Slevin, a nobody mistaken for a somebody who owes different mobsters large sums of money. There are a lot of balls to keep juggling, but Lucky Number Slevin finds a way to keep the headstrong momentum constantly going. The neo-noir art direction is fabulous and eye-catching. Things get really dark in the last act, perhaps too dark for some, but for me, this was a crime caper that left me captivated by clever storytelling and flashy camerawork. Definitely for fans of the noir genre and for those with hard stomachs for violence.

Akeelah and the Bee – It’s a familiar story and it may be predictable at every turn, but this movie shines when it comes to performances. Young Keke Parker plays the title super speller with equal parts fire, heartbreak, shyness, and pure glee. You easily fall in love with her and it makes her rise among the spelling ranks worth watching. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett give stirring performances to compliment a strong cast. The new angle Akeelah has going for it is its urban education perspective, seeing Akeelah have to hide her smarts out of fear of her peers. The movie is fun, and Akeelah’s budding relationship with a fellow speller is cute as can be. Akeelah and the Bee is a smartly written and uplifting family film with a lot of heart and a dash of schmaltz. Look for Booger as the inner city school principal that pins his hopes on Akeelah.
Nate’s Grade: B+
Grandma’s Boy – This Adam Sandler crony comedy came out within the first weeks of 2006. Many predicted it could very well remain one of the worst films of the year. Let me verify that belief. This is an incredibly lazy stoner sex comedy that can’t even get gratuitous nudity right. Its premise (video game tester moves in with three old women) never takes off, and much of the movie just feels like one giant drunken party. The story doesn’t even kick in until an hour in; you’re not Brokeback Mountain, Grandma’s Boy, you cannot afford to take your time and sit on your ass. This stuff just isn’t funny. You want to know how unfunny? A character thinks he’s in The Matrix. Hi-larious and oh so timely. The movie trots out a nerd's dream girl (Linda Cardalini) for a rediculous romantic subplot that will just continue to give people who play Xbox 20 hours a day false hope. Sandler needs to stop bankrolling his buddies' tired pet projects (Do we really need more Rob Schneider movies?). This one is written by and stars Allen Covert and is directed by a guy whose only other credit to his name is, honestly, as an assistant to Covert on another movie. You can see how interested in quality Sandler and Covert are. This is rather insultingly unfunny for a raunchy sex comedy. It even plays it all too safe. There's strong potential for a grand gross-out comedy involving horny old women, but this isn't it. You mostly just feel sorry for the actors. This is a movie that doesn’t work on any level, except to keep Sandler’s buddies busy so they won’t crash on his couch.

If you like jerking off to dolls then you will love this one. One of the funniest Happy Madison movies to date.
