Amy's world threatens to fall apart, however, when she suddenly contracts cancer. Various members of the community turn up to show love and support, and for a time it looks as though the cancer will permanently recede. That remission proves all too brief, however, as the disease returns with a vengeance, rapidly metastasizing and eventually claiming Amy's life.
