Eol Lee, Hyuk Poong Kwon, In-kwon Kim

A serial killer named Shin-Hyun gives himself up to police. He confesses to committing a series of particularly horrifying murders of exclusively female victims. He is imprisoned, awaiting the death s...( read more  read more... )entence for his crimes. Yet the killings do not stop. They continue with all the same characteristics trademarks of the Shin-Hyun serial killings. The case is re-opened when two more bodies are discovered, both pregnant women. One is found in the city's landfill site, and the other is horrifically murdered on a public bus. Detective Mi Yun (played by Yum Jung-Ah), and her newly appointed partner, Detective Kang (played by Ji Jin-Hee), are assigned to the case. Mi Yun and Kang have difficulty working with each other, as their personalities and working methods are constantly in conflict. Detective Kang goes about his new job buoyantly and enthusiastically. He follows a new suspect, Huh, and eventually catches him in the act of brutally murdering a woman in a crowded techno bar. Huh is taken into custody after Kang shoots and wounds him at the scene of the crime. Once again, the case seems to be solved with this spectacular arrest. Yet the murders continue in copy-cat style. The police desperately hunt for new leads. They start an in-depth investigation of a Doctor Chu, who is Shin-Hyun's psychiatrist. But progress is frustrated when Dr Chu becomes a victim of the copy-cat killings herself. The murdered psychiatrist's former boyfriend quickly becomes the prime suspect, a fanatical character named Choi. All the pieces in the mystery are finally starting to fit together, and the case seems almost resolved. But all efforts are suddenly frustrated once again, when Choi takes his own life. But still, the killings do not stop with his death. The case gets more complicated, when even the police themselves appear to become suspects in the murders. In unraveling this mystery, everyone involved is pushed to the limits of human understanding.

Don't bother watching this if you have Se7en, Manhunter or Memories of Murder at hand. It's a poor mans...anything in this genre really. Interesting at times but mostly a confused and at times laughable serial killer thriller. The performances are okay but the dialogue is flat an...( read more)d at times just attempts to explain the film. There are some nice unprdictable moments, but they just add to the mess. The beginning with dead babies is both shocking and twisted, but it sort of loses its edge once it falls into genre stereotypes.

Those of you who have seen films like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs when watching this will have an overwhelming feeling of deja vu. H is pretty much the Korean equivalent of those and many other murder/mysteries.. But obviously inferior.

I was annoyed ...( read more)that the film wasn't as original as I was hoping for. Virtually everything in here you have seen somewhere before, that's including story, the style of murders and even the killer; the film is basically a rehash of all of those great films of the same genre.

And yet the film manages to grip you and get you very involved in the story and characters. Not quite holding you consistently and all the way through but enough for you to want to keep watching and for you to want to find out what happens in the end. The reason I personally wanted to keep watching was the amount of shocking and very grisly (and sometimes hard to watch) scenes of various aftermaths of murder or pretty exciting chase scenes. I certainly applaud H for going that but further than some other films of the genre and at least being almost outlandish (if I can use such a strong word). But unfortunately the unoriginality of the bigger picture overshadows the certain moments of originality that the film has.

The film does however have some strong positives to it that fortunately makes the film perfectly wtachable and you can ultimately forgive the film for being so unoriginal. First of all, like many Korean films, this film is very dark and grippingly creepy. The atmosphere throughout the film was very tense and you almost always have a sense of "what's going to happen next". Secondly the acting in the film is very solid. A Tale of Two Sisters star Yum Jung-ah stars as the lead female in the story, someone who was very well cast in my opinion. It was very important for this film to have good performances to help redeem it from being unwatchable.

Because of its unoriginality I should be very much against this film. And yet I am was drawn to it, I enjoyed being emmersed in its story and the sense of "who done it?" kept me very much wanting to see what happens in the end. Director Lee Jong-hyuk should be proud for making an at least passable first atetmpt at a film but I just hope that he learns from his mistakes and makes a much better film next time round.

Laughable at times, but often gruesome, you shouldn't approach "H" with too many expectations. Its reputation of being a Frankenstein of other films has been widely confirmed by fellow reviewers, but the film often finds interesting visual ways to reveal what the many leaks in t...( read more)he script have already told us.

    Worth a look, though.

It's been over a year since I've seen this, I'll have to rent it again. I do remember I liked it alot for a korean movie. I'm not much for foreign films either.

Brilliant, sort of live Seven, but not! You'll understand if you saw it.

Cross between 'Seven' and 'silence of the Lambs'; but I think i would've enjoyed it more if it were dubbed in English. Still, it managed to have an amazing, terrifying ending***

Twists and turns and messing with your head, that's what it's all about. :]

very graphic, but also a very good storyline.
